Character Clichés

These characters are incredibly boring to me, as they're so overplayed that I can't even express how much I roll my eyes when they come up. Now, if you have some parts of these clichés, that's fine! Just, you know, give them more character traits than "basic."

Dark and Brooding

Characters whose only personality traits are "tormented," "depressed," and "thoughtful." They spend their time thinking about their past and most of their lines come out something like, "love isn't real, I'd know" or "life is nothing but pain."

Femme Fatale

A femme fatale is a female character who uses her body in any way she can. She only cares about herself and stop at nothing to get what she wants - except that's the extent of her shallow, shallow personality.

Mary Sue

I've been over this: someone who is perfect in every way, but is not vain about it. You can tell when the character is a Mary Sue because when someone says "wow, she's so beautiful," she blushes and tells them that they're wrong.

Rebel Without a Cause

A character who is rebellious and so anti-establishment, who can't be held down and she's so not gonna listen to authority. No one is gonna tell her what to do, and she's never gonna face any consequences for it whatsoever.

Sassy Gays

I can't even make fun of this one because it's just so obnoxious. For some reason, every gay character is an asshole - they flip their hair, pop their p's, roll their eyes, mouth-off and throw tantrums whenever they don't get their way (bonus points if everyone is ridiculously homophobic for literally no reason).

Reckless and Stupid

Someone who does something with no forethought or planning, simply because they want to, or because they think they have the right idea. Peter in Infinity War is easily the best example of this.

Innocent Baby

Admittedly, this one isn't as common as the rest: when the character trusts everything and everyone, and has no sense of self-preservation. They can become unbelievably annoying, especially when they're used only for plot purposes.

Lovable Rogue

Someone who is rough and uncontrollable, but has a heart of gold and will always do the right thing. Even when they're the cause of the problem in the first place... and have ridiculously cheesy lines and really, really forced "character arc."

Older Sister

While this could also be a guy, the older sister cliché is when the elder sibling will do anything for their younger sibling: even when giving up something they love. More often than not, they don't have much of a personality - when the author calls them "wise" or "likable," they really mean "mild" and "forgettable."

"Quirky"

The "random" and "eccentric" character that is usually used as comedic relief or when someone really, really wants attention. The best imagery I can use for this cliché is "early 2000's emo culture."

Haha, I'm So Dumb!

Oh for the love of God all you had to do was follow simple instructions- whether or not you're going for comedic relief or something similar, just don't make your character unable to do the simplest things. People can do things, no matter how utterly moronic they are.

Spunky Tomboy Heroine

Sassy, argumentative, hates dresses, hates make-up, thinks pink is the worst color, only likes black, wears flannel and torn jeans exclusively, and kicks ass constantly. She also tends to never fail and shows up all those magically overly misogynistic people that only appear when the character needs to prove herself.

Anti-Mary Sue

This character is trying so hard not to be a Mary Sue that it's just embarrassing. Nothing stands out about them or they have one mild trait that isn't too powerful.

LGBT, Disabled and Abused

This ties in with balancing your characters tragedy out - characters who are LGBT or whatever tend to have abusive parents/siblings/etc. who never understand and are outrageously cruel. Just don't with this one.

Poor Bad Boy/Rich Good Girl

He was a poor bad boy with terrible grades living in a rundown apartment haunted by thugs and she was a rich good girl that's the teacher's pet in every class and her parents are incredibly rich. This is a terrible cliché.

Love Triangles, With Hate

I like love triangles - I think they have a lot of potential in both plot and comedy. I hate the love triangles where two people like the same person and absolutely despise each other.

Cheerleader Blonde Bitch

Stop right there, author who intends to write a cheesy teen romance novel. The head cheerleader isn't always a perfect, superficial blonde bitch who will stoop really low to bring you down.

Twins

Always in sync, always knowing what the other one is thinking about, always the same boring cliché. Whether or not they're exactly the same or absolute total opposites, it's still sleep-inducing.
