The Myth of the Sun and Moon

Once, long ago, there lived two cats, two cats who loved each other with all of their hearts. Their names were Sun and Moon. They weren't, however, male or female-- they simply were. They were the creators of all of the cats.

Moon shone with a gentle, silvery light, bringing peace to the other cats of the lands. Moon was the healer, the defender, and the one who calmed the angry shouts of catkind and brought prosperity. Their emotions were like the tide, ebbing in and our ever so slowly. But beware the one who summoned their wrath, for they would never breathe again. But when enemies approached, it was Sun, with their brilliance, that drove them away.

Sun shone with a brilliant, blinding light, their emotions bright and their charisma huge. Sun was the leader, the guide, and the one who showed the way. They were the one that others expected to know answers-- the problem solver, the genius. When they felt tired, though, they leaned on Moon.

They were both leaders-- though Moon in not so obvious of a way. Moon was gentle, subtle, and easily overshadowed by Sun, who shone brightly-- so brightly that they nearly covered up the silver light of Moon.

One day, Moon could take it no more and headed to a healer, the one who spoke the words of the stars. The healer blinked, closed their eyes, and told Moon that they would always be overshadowed by Sun, but still loved.

Moon, however, did not like the answer. They curled up and cried, tears streaming down their face like the creatures that walked on two legs. This was something only they and Sun could do, for their tears brought forth life. But instead of beautiful, pure cats, Moon's tears of anger shaped cats with pelts as dark as the watered earth-- or night, though night did not yet exist in that time.

"Drive Sun out," Moon whispered, their voice cracking with anger. The cats of darkness nodded, then set off after Sun.

Sun did not expect to be attacked by Moon-- or anyone, for that matter-- so they were overcome quickly by the cats of darkness. They fell to the ground, gasping when they saw their attackers-- cats as black as could be imagined. "Who are you?" Sun hissed in shock, shuddering when their claws sank into fur.

The cats of darkness purred. "We are the sons and daughters of your beloved, born of jealousy and hatred. And you are our parent, they who Moon wants dead."

Sun gasped again, trying to bat away the cats of darkness. But it was no use, and the cats of darkness gave a mighty leap and placed them among the stars up above. Sun could not handle the height, and their fur began to flutter down, slowly and calmly, while they cried from above.

The tears and fur fell unto their sons and daughters of light, and it melded into their souls, filling them with goodness and happiness. But some stayed empty, devoid of any bit of their parent's essence, and they did not know why their sisters and brothers loved the Sun so.

Moon was overcome with guilt and remorse when they saw what had happened to their beloved, so they, too, jumped toward Sun in sadness. But Sun pushed Moon away, and they are doomed to never touch, imprisoned in two halves of the day as they chase one another around the earth-- one in anger, and one in remorse.

And so the fur and tears of Moon also fell unto the earth, filling all but the cats of darkness with a sliver of their soul. Those cats were the full of happiness and completeness, and Moon's fur regrew, only to fall on the kittens born of their children.

But some Sun kept for themself, letting their fur fall unto their chosen ones. And those were destined for greatness.

But when they died, the soul returned to its parent-- those of moon to the Moon, and those of sun to Sun.

And so ends the tale of the Sun and Moon, in an endless cycle that wraps time in its beatiful grasp.
