Those Six Infamous Words
The next day, another meeting was called. Everyone was there. Dick, Tim, Barbara, Alfred, Kevin, and Bruce were there, all in their costumes. Kevin and Barbara explained about Arthur Fleck, Jack Napier, and how Fleck cloned himself, thus confirming there were three Jokers!
"Three Jokers?" Tim asked in shock, "I'll be damned. This is like something out of a sci-fi mystery." Kevin nodded and said, "You're not far off Tim. As of now, the clone is the only living Joker. This Joker shot Barbara and killed Jason."
"And Cadmus never acknowledged the clone sabotage?" Alfred asked. "It's Cadmus Alfred," said Bruce, "they're run by Amanda Waller. She's had it out for me for a long time. So of course she'd do nothing." This left many of them angered. Waller was a monster, but sadly, she was part of the government, and there wasn't much they could do.
"Want to see me tempt fate?" joked Nightwing as he smirked. "Don't say those six infamous words!" warned Kevin. "Which words?" asked Dick, "What's the worst he could do or could this day get any worse?" Batgirl's eyes narrowed. "Can I borrow your boot Barbara?" Kevin asked. "Hell yeah you can," said Barbara, "you know he can do so much worse Richard. You of all people should know that." She took off her right boot, her foot now bare, and she handed her boot to Kevin. He then whacked Dick in the back of his head with the boot. "Ow!" Dick griped, rubbing his head.
Barbara smiled a little at Kevin. She crossed her arms at Dick and said, "Don't go there." Dick rubbed the back of his head and said, "Alright, I won't say those six words in front of you. Unless it's Wub A Lub A Dub Dub!" Kevin scowled. He hated Rick and Morty. "You want this one?" Kevin asked as he offered Barbara's boot to her. She took the boot and whacked Dick in the arm, slipping her boot back on. "I'm being serious," she said. "Alright, I get it," said Dick, rubbing his arm. He knew this was no laughing matter. "Good, I wouldn't want you to die from a stupid decision," said Barbara as she rolled her eyes and pulled off her cowl.
"Is there anything that can be done?" Tim asked. "I will have words with Waller," promised Bruce, "I can promise you that. Until then, we can only hope that Joker will remain in Arkham and he won't escape." It was wishful thinking, but that's all they could do for now.
The next day, Kevin was outside the manor shooting some hoops in the basketball court. He was scoring well so far. "Want a partner?" Dick asked, walking in. "We could play some one-on-one." Kevin shrugged and asked, "Sure, why not?" And so they proceeded to play basketball together. As Kevin dribbled the ball, he said, "Dick, about the NCIS Salute and the smartass remarks, I'm sorry about that..."
"You don't have to apologize for anything Kevin," said Dick, "I was being annoying and I should've been more mature under those circumstances. The thing is, sometimes I use those jokes as a way of coping with everything." He then took the ball, running to the designated hoop. "Guess we got our own coping mechanisms," said Kevin, "I had a classmate in middle school who used to draw. And oh could he draw beautifully... he told me he would always draw as a coping mechanism. So I can understand where you're coming from Richard." Dick then scored a point.
"If you think I'm grating, you should meet my friend Wally," joked Dick, "admittedly, he's a lot funnier." He dribbled the ball until Kevin took it. "I noticed you're getting a little friendly with Barbara," said Dick as they ran around the court. "And what's wrong with that?" asked Kevin. "I guess there's nothing wrong with that," said Dick, "but I've seen the way you look at her. That's the way I looked when-"
"You developed a crush on Starfire?" Kevin asked, and with that distraction he was able to throw the basketball into the hoop. "I may not have known it the first time," said Kevin, "but Barbara told me you cheated on her. As someone that was born and raised in a Catholic upbringing, I can say your adultery was wrong man."
"Weren't you a result of pre-marital sex?" Dick pointed out. "Okay, so I guess I'm one to talk," said Kevin, "but my point still stands." He continued to dribble the ball. "You know, for someone that's Bruce's son, you sure don't act like him," said Dick. "I may not be my father," said Kevin, "but if I were, and I found out you cheated on Barbara, you bet your ass I'd call you out on your affair, and I'd knock some sense into you!"
For the next couple of minutes, Kevin and Dick proceeded to continue with their one-on-one challenge, each one scoring their own personal hoop. But by 10 minutes, Kevin won most of the game. "In my defense, Slade gassed me with a hallucinogenic gas that almost killed me," defended Dick. "That's no excuse to cheat on someone as brilliant as Barbara!" Kevin snapped back, "The fact that you would throw something away like the relationship you had with her sickens me! If I was suffering the same hallucinations you were with Slade, I'd want Barbara to be by my side! Because I know that Barbara wouldn't leave me and I trust her!" Dick raised his hand and said, "Alright, fair point..."
What Dick and Kevin didn't know was that Barbara overheard everything. She was about to walk back home but she heard Kevin defending her and she stopped before she could be seen. She smiled, she thought Kevin was sweet but he didn't have to defend her like that, although she did appreciate it. She didn't care what Dick thought anymore. She used to but after they broke up, everything fell out of place. As she left the manor, Barbara started to debate with herself whether she had feelings for Kevin.
