Father Meets Son
"You wished to speak with me?" Bruce asked, using his billionaire playboy voice. "Yes sir, Mr. Wayne..." said Kevin, "It's nice to meet you and your confidant Mr. Pennyworth. You may not believe it Alfred, but I accidentally thought your last name was Beagle." Alfred chuckled and said, "Alfred Beagle? What an amusing coincidence! My mother's maiden name was actually Beagle. So you're not too far off Mr. Beaumont."
"Would you like some coffee? Perhaps then we can talk," offered Bruce. "Sure please," said Kevin. "Normally, Master Bruce likes to have his coffee black," said Alfred, "would you like cream or sugar with your coffee?"
"Both please," said Kevin, "one pack of sugar, please." Alfred nodded and said, "Of course." As Alfred went to prepare the coffee, Bruce guided Kevin to the dining table. "Please, take a seat," said Bruce as he took the main chair. Kevin sat on the chair on Bruce's right side. "So, your last name is Beaumont?" asked Bruce. "Yes, it is," confirmed Kevin. Alfred came back with two cups of coffee and said, "Your coffee, gentlemen."
"Thank you Alfred," said Bruce as Alfred handed out the two cups of coffee. "Yes, thank you Mr. Pennyworth," said Kevin as he sipped his coffee. The coffee was clearly made with an espresso coffeemaker. "Beaumont is often a common surname," pointed Bruce, "so you may have to forgive me for asking this Kevin... Would you happen to be related to the late Carl Beaumont?" Kevin nodded and said, "Well, yes... I may not have met him, but he would've been my grandfather." Bruce nodded and said, "You know he only had one daughter, right? Her name was Andrea."
"Yes, she's my mother," confirmed Kevin. Bruce's eyes widened in surprise. He hadn't seen or heard about Andrea in 25 years. "How old are you Kevin?" he asked. "23 going on 24," said Kevin, "I graduated three weeks ago."
"I was well acquainted with your mother," said Bruce, "we dated for awhile. Did your mother ever marry?" Kevin shook his head no and said, "Nope. She was a single Catholic mother that raised me on her own. Wasn't interested in dating."
"Did you ever meet your father, or have a father figure?" Bruce asked. "Well, I'm actually looking at him right now," said Kevin. Bruce was in disbelief. How was this possible? It did bring him back to the fateful night he encountered The Phantasm. The police thought he was the one murdering the former Red Hood gang members. At the last minute before he was gunned down, Andrea saved him. She knew he was Batman, but that didn't matter. Bruce made love to Andrea that night. The next day, he found out she was The Phantasm, and she disappeared. She clearly wasn't dead. "Are you sure?" Bruce asked, trying to keep cool. "Mom wanted me to give you these," said Kevin as he gave Bruce his birth certificate and the letter. Bruce saw that Kevin was born on July 28th, 1994. The certificate confirmed Bruce was the father. And Andrea was the mother. Bruce handed the certificate to Alfred. Bruce then read the letter. Andrea wrote...
Dear Bruce,
I know we haven't spoken in 25 years, and I understand if you're angry at me for all the things I've done as The Phantasm. I've written so many versions of this letter, trying to think of the right words to say this... But I'll write it now. We have a son. His name is Kevin. I know it may not seem like it, but Kevin is like you in so many ways. He's strong and brave, has your detective skills, smart, and sometimes stubborn. I wanted to tell you, but I feared you'd want nothing to do with me or our son, and if the public found out, it would surely damage your reputation. I told him of who you are. He knows you're Batman. But he won't expose your secret. Kevin is very trustworthy. I've changed for the better, and Kevin has helped me become a better person. Please don't let him suffer for my sins. He only wants to open up to you. Please welcome him into your life. I miss you, and my feelings for you haven't changed my love.
Andrea.
Bruce was moved to tears by the letter. Kevin plucked out a piece of his hair and said, "If you don't believe me, you can take a sample of my DNA to confirm." Bruce took Kevin's strand of hair and said, "I'll be back." Bruce then left the room to see if Kevin's DNA matched with his own. Alfred took a look at the letter. "I must say, you have his eyes," he said. Kevin sipped his coffee and said, "Thanks. Hey, do you know that redhead's name? The girl who left?"
"Oh, that's Barbara Gordon," said Alfred, "she's the Commissioner's daughter." Kevin nodded and said, "Ah, okay. She's very pretty. Though, she looked stressed, kinda like Mom..." Alfred sighed and said, "Many women deal with burdens that cause stress. Your mother and Miss Gordon are no exception. I've known Miss Gordon since she was 16. I can tell when something's bothering her." Kevin nodded and said, "No kidding. I think she broke up with her boyfriend. I met him too." Alfred was unsurprised. An hour later, Bruce came back in his Batman suit.
Batman nodded at Alfred. "It's a boy?" Alfred asked. The Bat Computer confirmed that Kevin was Bruce's biological son. Batman nodded. "I can see a resemblance," joked Alfred. "Kevin, come with me," said Batman. Kevin followed his father to the clock with the portrait of Thomas and Martha Wayne. The clock was by the right, revealing a tunnel with stairs. Batman went down the stairs, and Kevin followed. Soon, they were in the Batcave. Kevin looked in amazement. "Wow..." was all he could say. Batman took off his mask and said, "Kevin Adam Beaumont, you are my son. I know your mother wants me to welcome you into my life. And if I'm going to, you need to know my secrets. I won't hide anything from you. But I want to know if I can trust you." He gave Kevin the Bat Cowl. Kevin held the mask. "I want you to swear to me that you will keep all this a secret, and not tell anyone under any circumstances," said Bruce. Kevin held the mask with his left hand and raised his right hand, facing his father, and said, "I swear to you that I will keep all this a secret and not tell anyone." He smiled at his father. "Welcome to the family, son;" said Bruce. "Can I call you Dad at least?" asked Kevin. Bruce smirked and said, "In private."
