Coffee With Babs

For the next few weeks, Kevin was used to a routine. On the weekdays, he would play basketball and go to the gym for his daily exercise. Sometimes, when Bruce wasn't busy, Kevin would spend time with him, and they'd do activities a normal father and son would do. Sometimes, they'd even watch a baseball or basketball game. In the night, sometimes Kevin would lounge in the Batcave to see what sort of baddies would be messing around. Bruce would tell Kevin which heroes he could consider his allies, and which ones he shouldn't. Or maybe he'd help Alfred with cooking, because Kevin loved to cook. At 7:30, Kevin would go on Gotham's ABC Channel to watch Jeopardy! Then he'd go to bed, and on Sundays, he'd go to church. It was a routine he was used to.

On one particular Sunday morning, Kevin was dressed in his Sunday best. He'd just finished going to church, and was ready for breakfast. What he didn't know was that Barbara was coincidentally jogging that morning. She was jogging to the church, and she and Kevin accidentally ran into each other. Barbara recoiled and stepped back, still jogging in place a little. She plugged out an earphone. "Shoot, Sorry Kevin..." She told him and took a small break to re-tie her red hair and secure her earphones. "It's okay Barbara, I should've looked where I was going," chuckled Kevin, "so, doing a morning jog?"

"Yeah." She told him, slightly out of breath. "You're making your way to church right?" She asked him, noticing his clothes. "Actually, I finished," admitted Kevin, "ready for some breakfast."

"I could use some coffee," she offered and shrugged. "Sounds good," said Kevin, "I hear there's a coffee shop right near the church. Want to walk there?"

"I'll jog there. I have about..." she looked at her phone. "I have some time."

"Sounds good," said Kevin, "I doubt anyone will steal my car outside the church, so I'll walk over there. Maybe we can have a longer conversation." He winked at her again. "Sure, why not?" She gave him a small smile. "I'll meet you there."

"Alright, see ya soon," said Kevin as he walked to the coffee shop. Babs jogged over to the coffee shop and sat down. Once Kevin got there, he saw Babs sitting on the seat. He walked up to her and jokingly asked, "Pardon me, but have you seen a beautiful redhead anywhere?"

"Stop..." she shook her head and crossed her arms. "Not now."

"Sorry, my bad..." Kevin said awkwardly. "Is there a certain coffee you like here?"

"It's fine, Kev," said Barbara, giving him an apologetic smile. She had broken up with Dick and wasn't currently looking for a relationship. "Um... Cappuccino or a dark espresso." She told him simply. "Something tells me you're in the mood for a dark espresso," said Kevin. He did his best impression of The Terminator and said, "I'll be back." He then went into line to get the orders. Babs smirked and shook her head. She already liked this guy. She looked at her phone, turned off the notifications and just waited until he came back. Once it was his turn, Kevin ordered a dark espresso, their popular coffee drink for himself, and their breakfast sandwich. Once it was paid for, Kevin sat down next to Barbara. "They should be ready in a few minutes," promised Kevin. "Good. I've been dying to get a coffee an hour after I left my apartment." She told him and let down her hair, brushing through it. "I know what you mean," said Kevin, "I'm a bear until I've had at least a small cup of coffee."

"Same here." She agreed and shifted in her seat. "Well it'd be nice to know the real Barbara Gordon," said Kevin as he smiled. "The real Barbara? What do you mean by that?" She asked, intrigued by his comment. "Well, our conversations have been short so far," said Kevin, "now that you're not in any costumes, it'd be nice to talk with regular you." He didn't want to say her code name. He was sworn to secrecy. "Ask away. I'm pretty open so, go ahead." She smiled at him and shrugged. "I hear you're the Donatello of the group," said Kevin, "you're a tech whiz?"

"That is correct. I'm very tech savvy along with Tim. I've been training myself to hack as well, for the benefit of my job of course." She told him with a slightly proud smile. "Very interesting," said Kevin. His name was called. "Hold on a minute." He got up to get his order. A few seconds later, Kevin came back with two large coffee cups, and a wrapped sandwich. "Here's your dark espresso," said Kevin as he gave it to her. "Thank you." She happily took the coffee cup and blew on it a bit before taking a sip. Kevin sat down and took a bite of his breakfast sandwich. Once he swallowed, he asked, "Any activities you like to do when you're not helping my dad?"

"I'm currently working at a library so I'm always reading in my free time but otherwise... I like to dance, maybe spend a day at the fair having some fun. Everything is fun when you're with friends." She explained. "Not a fan of clowns though.... I despise them."

"Mom ain't too fond of them either," said Kevin, "the closest she will tolerate to clowns is the 2017 It movie, only because Pennywise gets his ass kicked in the end. And I agree, it is always fun to spend time with friends. When I was growing up in Bellevue, Mom and I went to this one mall that had a bookstore. It was called Half Price Books. They sell videos and DVD's there too. You would like that place."

"Seems like a pretty calming place. I'd love to visit it," said Barbara with a smile. "Tell me about your mom... Andrea Beaumont, Bruce said? I remember reading about her. She was Bruce's girlfriend before the whole deal that's been going on... her father had to pay some money to a crime family, he got killed in Italy and she became the Phantasm, correct?" She had near perfect memory so remembering things, even the things that should be extremely hard to remember, she achieved it. "Impressive. Every word in that sentence was completely right," said Kevin as he took a bite from his sandwich, "and not just any type of gang. The Red Hood Gang."

"Fantastic. Just fantastic." She rolled her eyes. "If I could ever express how much I despise that gang, I don't think I'd ever finish." She chuckled a bit and drank her coffee."You can join the club," said Kevin, "they ruined our lives. If it weren't for the Red Hood gang, the man who would have been my grandfather would have been alive, and I would probably have lived a normal life, with a father to help raise me." When he said our, he of course meant Bruce and Andrea's lives. He sipped his coffee. "Maybe. Maybe not. I believe Bruce's parents murder had nothing to do with the Red Hood Gang, so... he would have ended up the same..." said Barbara.

"Yeah, it's wishful thinking," said Kevin, "but Dad told me if Mom stayed, the pain probably would have gone away, and he would have been happy. But I guess we'll both never know. Nonetheless, growing up without Dad helped me build character. It's helped me for the better."

"Then we're not too different. My mom died when I was a baby so I never really got to meet her. My dad raised me and my brother alone. He did the best he could." She told him. "Guess so..." Kevin said, thinking of all the sacrifices his mother had to make for him, "my mom raised me on her own. She never remarried cuz she told me she could never love a man the same way she loved Dad." Barbara smiled. "My dad remarried once... I liked her..." she reminisced. "But that's sweet. She sounds like a wonderful woman, regardless of her thirst for vengeance."

"Yeah, once she was pregnant, she was done with revenge," said Kevin, "she became a better person because of me. Kinda why she and I are Catholics." Babs finished her drink. "Wish my brother ended up like that. Now he's just a homicidal maniac at Arkham.... Gotham changes people doesn't it?"

"That's for sure," said Kevin as he finished his sandwich, "guess it only takes one major event to turn one person into a different person entirely."

"I think my dad and I proved that very thing wrong many years ago." She scoffed. "I was shot through the spine and paralyzed by the Joker and he used that to torture my dad into going insane. It didn't work."

"Wow, I didn't know that," said Kevin, extremely shocked, especially since... wasn't The Joker dead? "You are a walking miracle, figuratively and literally. And now I have more reasons to respect your father. He's one tough cookie."

"Tough cookie he is. But yeah, I guess you could say I really am a walking miracle...." she chuckled. "But I don't like to dwell on that. I'm just glad I'm okay now..." she sighed, thinking of Jason. "That's good," said Kevin, "it's best to move forward. Say, on a more brighter note, is there any TV shows you like to watch when you're not busy?" Kevin hoped this would make her feel a little bit happy. "Surprisingly, I don't watch a lot of TV. I used to watch tons of cartoons as a kid, but since I met Bruce and that asshole I called a friend... I've been too busy for Saturday morning cartoons or shows you know?"

"I get ya," said Kevin, "me, I never miss an episode of Jeopardy. You could say it's my favorite game show."

"Oh! I used to watch that with my dad a ton. Great show." She admitted. "Still is," said Kevin as he smiled. He drank his coffee. "Man, I love this coffee. Starbucks ain't got nothing on this!"

"Mm. Gotham doesn't have a Starbucks I think... we're sort of... stuck in the past." She laughed. "It's strong though".

"For sure. Next to Alfred's, this is the best coffee yet," said Kevin as he took another sip of the coffee. "Alfred's coffee is absolutely delicious. Tim and I are absolutely obsessed with it". She chuckled. "Well that's cool," said Kevin, "say, you want to hear a secret?"

"Depends on what kind." She smirked and leaned forward. "Well, this may or may not surprise Nightwing, but..." Kevin whispered, "I'm not really interested in being a superhero." Barbara's face contorted into one of surprise. "Really? Well... why not? I get it's risky but... is there any other reason?" she asked. "Well, being a superhero often takes a toll on a person's relationship," whispered Kevin, "I mean; I'm an example of a strained relationship because Dad is a superhero. I just don't want to end up like my parents... You understand, right?"

"Yeah, of course I do...last relationship I had went wrong and it wasn't even related to being a hero and he blamed me for lying to him about it when he did the exact same thing." She made a face of disbelief. "I don't want that for anyone."

"You won't tell anyone, right?" Kevin asked, "So far, you, Dad, and Alfred are the only ones who know so far."

"Who am I going to tell? Timmy is too obsessed with coffee and Richard is probably making out with an alien right now." She shrugged. "I'm not going to tell anyone." Kevin smiled and said, "Thanks Barbara. You're a good friend."

"You're welcome." She gave him a smile. "Hey, in case there's some event where I might need your help, can I have your number?" Kevin asked, trying to not sound flirtatious at all. Maybe he would need help. Especially with The Joker suddenly on his mind. "Yeah. Sure why not." She shrugged. "Do you have a pen?" She asked him with a smile on her face. She didn't sense him being flirtatious so that was good. "I always have a spare pen," said Kevin, "thankfully, they never bleed." He then gave Barbara his pen. She took the pen and grabbed his hand. She wrote her number on the back of his hand with her name under it. She handed it back and smiled. "There you go." Kevin got his phone, and put the number in his contacts. "Perfect," he said, "Thanks Babs." He smiled at her. "Awesome." She looked at her watch. "Hey, I gotta get going. I'm meeting with Frankie and if I don't show up she'll straight up kill me." She chuckled. "Hey, no problem," said Kevin, "Thanks for having breakfast with me." He smiled at her. "It was nice taking a break and getting to know you a little better." She smiled back and plugged in her earphones then put them on. "See ya Kev."

"You too," said Kevin as he smiled and waved. Two things were on his mind. His feelings for Barbara, and Joker. Babs walked out of the coffee shop and started to jog all the way toward the apartment she shared with Frankie. Behind Kevin was a dude around 6 feet, wearing a tan leather jacket, black boots, and the type of clothes a motorcycle dude would wear. He had jet black hair with a white streak, and blue eyes. He looked at Kevin and said, "She gave you her number? You lucky son of a bitch." He smirked.

"Well, it's in case of emergencies," said Kevin, trying to justify that. "Sure...." the motorcycle dude said, "she's way out of your league, dude." Kevin decided to not let this guy's snarky comments bother him, and went home.
