TWELVE

"Are you okay?"

"Yeah. I just need a minute" Jenna said straightening her dress. She couldn't believe they just did that. What if someone had walked in on them? What if that someone had been Daniella his current girlfriend? What excuse could she have used to explain herself? They were divorced. The whole world knew they weren't together anymore. What was wrong with her?

"Why won't you look at me Jennifer?" he asked trying to get her to look at him but she couldn't. This was all wrong. She had no claim over him. Not anymore.

"Please leave me alone" her traitorous voice shook giving her away. She didn't want to cry in front of him.

"Come on Jennifer don't shut me out. Not now that....."

"That we've what Jeremy?" she cut him off fuming.

"Jennifer you're the one who left me. You told me to move on"

"Then why are you here? Why did you follow me?"

"Because I wanted to be sure." he said in a defeated tone. Jenna didn't want him to sound defeated. She wanted him to fight with her, say hurtful things that would stop her from going back to him. Having sex with him had reminded her of a time when they were good together. A time when nothing was keeping them apart. She wanted to go back to the way it was. But he had already moved on so there was no going back.

"Sure about what?" Jenna asked irritated.

"That there was still something between us."

"We are over Jeremy. There is nothi...." his lips were on top of hers, silencing whatever it is she wanted to say. It was unfair how the moment he touched her, everything else faded away leaving only the two of them. How was she supposed to move on from that? Holding her face in his hands, he pulled back and stared into her eyes.

"Don't tell me there is nothing between us. What we have shouldn't be referred to as nothing. I told that you were it for me and I meant it. No one is going to replace you Jennifer."

"Daniella....."

"Means nothing to me."

"Then why are you with her?"

He stepped back sighing "It's complicated..."

"Will you please stop. Just stop Jeremy."

"I swear it's not what you think"

"Leave" she pointed to the door. He hesitated and she thought he was going to try and justify his actions but he changed his mind the last minute. He walked to the door, glanced at her one last time then left, closing it softly. Jenna leaned on the sink trying not to give in to the pain that wanted to suffocate her. Jeremy was right. She was the one who had divorced him because she couldn't let go of her past. He had been willing to do whatever she wanted but she had been so adamant on breaking all ties with her mother that she also left her husband. It was her fault he was moving on. Determined not to fall apart in a public place, she pulled herself together then exited the bathroom only to bump into Daniel Maxwell.

"Jere sent me to take you home because your friend left" he told her leaning on the wall, hands in his pockets.

"Okay" Jenna answered.

"For what it's worth I prefer you as my daughter in law over anyone else any day"

"Thank you?"

Daniel smiled moving away from the wall. "Let's get you home Jenna." he led her outside where his driver was waiting for them. Getting in they settled in the back seat, an awkward silence surrounding them. Jenna didn't know what to say to him. The last time they'd spoken, she had been lying on a hospital bed after donating her kidney to her mother. He'd thanked her countless times and even though she'd been doped up on pain medication, she'd seen how grateful he was. It was clear to her how much he loved his wife. She didn't need to understand why he did even after he found out she'd abandoned Jenna. All that mattered was that they overcame it and were still together. Why couldn't she and Jeremy have that?

"How did you meet him? Jonathan is his name. Right?" Daniel asked pulling her out of her thoughts.

"Yes. He came to my house and offered to donate money"

"Why?"

"Why what?"

"Why did he offer his help to you? Or does he do that with everyone else?"

"No. He said he understood what those kids had gone through and he wished someone had thought of helping them the way I was."

"So he doesn't have parents?"

"I don't know. He was pretty hazy on the details. Why are you asking?"

"Uh nothing. Just curious is all"

The rest of the ride home was quiet each with their own thoughts. Jenna bid Daniel goodbye then went straight to bed. She was grateful for having the house all to herself. As much as she loved the kids, sometimes she needed to be alone in order to let out what she felt without the fear of someone walking in on her. She refused to cry over him. If Jeremy wanted to move on, nothing was stopping him. The only thing she hoped was that it would get easier after some time. Being without him that is. It had to.

An hour later she was still tossing and turning when she heard a sound on her window. Freezing, she listened and there it was again. A tap. Like something or someone was throwing stones? At her window? It was past midnight already. No way she was going to see what it was. That was how people landed in trouble. She'd watched way too many movies to know curiosity didn't just kill the cat. Heart pounding in her chest, she pulled the covers over her head as if they would protect her from whatever evil that was lurking outside. A few moments passed and when she didn't hear anything else, she relaxed. Just as she was pushing the covers away from her head, a loud knock sounded from the window making her shriek in terror.

"Open up Jennifer. It's me" that voice....

"Jeremy?" she jumped out of bed and parted the curtains. "What the hell are you doing?"

"Open the window or I'll fall down and break my neck" he said urgently. Jenna unlatched the lock and pushed the window open. He climbed in then tripping on her curtains fell face flat on to the floor. Without meaning to, she burst out laughing then covered her mouth with her hand, when he stood up. "Are you laughing at my expense?"

"Yeah. How did you get up here anyway?"

"I borrowed a ladder from your neighbor"

"You stole Mr Curtis's ladder?"

"Borrowed is the word we're using here"

"Was there something wrong with the front door?"

"I didn't want your neighbors to see me coming here at this time of the night" he shrugged

"It's past midnight Jeremy. I'm sure all my neighbors are asleep"

"Fine. I thought it would also be romantic to climb up your bedroom window" he said sheepishly making her heart skip a beat. One second she wanted to kill him and the next he was melting her heart.

"Oh Jeremy. What am I going to do with you?"

"Hear me out? That's all I'm asking for Jennifer"

"What else is there to say?" she walked to her bed and sat down at the edge. Jeremiah followed her but knelt in front of her, taking her hands in his.

"The truth. I made you a promise my love. That there would only be you and I never broke it. My relationship with Daniella was fake. I wasn't really dating her"

"What do you mean?"

"I met her at an event I was attending. She was arguing with some guy and when it started getting out of control, I stepped in. After that we got to talking and I found out she was trying to get out of her father's wings. Control was more like it. She told me that the only way he would trust her enough to let go of her trust fund is if she was dating someone like me. I told her I was married but later when she figured out we were actually divorced, she asked me to pretend to be her boyfriend. The way she put it made sense back then. She would get what she wanted from her father and in the process we would make you jealous enough to come back to me"

"So you were dating her just to make me jealous?"

"No. Yes. In a way." he sighed kissing her hands. "I didn't mean to hurt you. I was so desperate that I was willing to do anything to get you back. Please forgive me for being stupid. I love you Jennifer"

"Did you sleep with her?"

"Never. I haven't been with anyone else. You have to believe me darling" he pleaded with her. They hadn't turned on the lights so they were depending on the one coming from the moon through the window. But she didn't need any lights to know he was telling her the truth. She could hear it in his words and voice. That was how it was when it came to him. She knew him as well as she knew herself. Even though they'd gotten married in a rush, she could tell when he wasn't  being honest with her.

"I do. I believe you Jeremy"

He sighed in relief saying "Thank you. I just needed you to know that" then he stood up getting ready to leave. "I'll let have some rest."

"You're leaving?" Jenna asked the fear evident in her voice. She didn't want him to go. Not yet.

"Yes. Goodnight my love" he went to leave but she held on to his hands.

"Stay. Please?" she begged. She didn't care if she sounded clingy or needy. She wanted him to stay.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes. Yes I am" Jenna said standing up

"Jennifer, I need you to know that if I stay I'm never leaving again. I know what it's like to live without you. I can't stay for just one night and then go back to that. I don't think I could do it baby. Are you ready for me to stay? I want you to be sure about it"

"Yes" she replied without hesitation. She'd lived for a year without him. And although the kids made her happy, she needed him to feel complete. She also needed to let go of the past. They'd both made mistakes and they'd paid for them dearly. It was time for a fresh start. A new beginning, one that they deserved because Jeremy had been right. What they had between them was rare and special. She would never find it again with someone else. "Yes Jeremy. I want you to stay."

The moment those words left her mouth, he closed the little distance between them and sealed their lips together, opening a new chapter in their lives. This was their second chance and Jenna vowed to be better this time. She would try her best to make it work with him. Love had never been the problem in their relationship. It never was because she never questioned how she felt about him. Even when she was hurting and angry, the one thing that was always a constant was the love she felt for him. It never went away or diminished. However, what they needed to do was work on the communication between them. There couldn't be any more secrets. Not if this was going to be a success.

"I love you" he murmured against her lips then lifting her on to his arms, he carried her to bed where he placed her in the middle, and hovered over her. "I am so sorry Jennifer. For everything. I promise you I'll try to be better this time"

"I love you too Jeremy. Always" she pulled his head down and kissed him. He pulled the night dress she was wearing over her head, then ran his hands from her shoulders, down her arms intertwining their fingers. No more words were needed to be spoken between them. All they had to do was feel, rekindle the fire that had been slowly dying when they were apart. Jenna let go of his hands so she could undress him. With shaking fingers, she tried to take off the sweat shirt he'd changed into before going there but even the task proved to be difficult. Every nerve ending in her body was buzzing with anxiety, nervousness and arousal. She wondered if it would still be the same.

She'd been with him earlier that day but that wasn't the same as now. This was so much different. They were binding two souls together again. In the most beautiful ancient ritual known to mankind. This was making love. Not a quick Fuck in the bathroom. When she took too long Jeremiah stood up, undressed himself then got back on bed with her, joining their bodies and making them one. Jenna sighed happily knowing nothing was going to stop them this time. They had learned from their mistakes and if they were both willing to try again then they were to be okay. More than okay.

Happy endings. Who doesn't love them?

In a way this chapter is a conclusion to A good person. Jonathan was MIA for a reason. Now I can officially say A Good Person is complete.

A good man is also wrapping things up. The next chapters are going to explain a lot of things. Stay tuned.
