C2: The Same Old Story, The Same Old Song

REWRITEN

Virgil and Valerie walked up to the front door and Valerie ran the bell. As they waited, Virgil pulled the hood of his black hoodie up, hiding his face from view. The door opened and he fixed his gaze on the ground as the person at the door greeted them. Virgil stumbled into, his stare not leaving the floor.

"So this is Virgil." Valerie introduced.

"Hello," he muttered.

"Hey, there I'm Thomas!" The man, Thomas said, "and this is Patton."

It was then that Virgil realized that someone else here that he didn't notice before. Keeping his head down Virgil raised his eyes slightly to a man with light brown hair and eyes, Thomas, he looked to be in his late 20s or early 30s. The second person was a fellow teen around his age with curly blond hair and blue eyes, Patton.

"Hey, there kiddo!" He said cheerfully, Virgil raised an eyebrow at the nickname but stayed quiet and returned his gaze to the floor. After a minute of talking between the two adults,

Thomas spoke up.

"Patton, why don't you show Virgil to his room and help him unpack while I finish talking with Ms. Torres-Rosario?" He suggested

"Sure!" The curly teen replied he skipped over to Virgil. He went to grab his duffle bag but Virgil grabbed it first. "Come on kiddo I'll show you your room!" Patton led him up the stairs with one final goodbye from Valerie.

-------

Thomas watched as his son led the darkly dressed boy up the stairs and turned back to the social worker.

"Don't worry." She said "just give it some time and he'll open up to you.... Hopefully" she said the last word under her breath.

"I'm sorry," I said. "What was that?"

The woman sighed "Virgil... well, he has a hard time opening up to people, it takes a much longer time than most kids if he opens up to them at all." She explained.

Thomas smiled at her "well both me and my son are up for the challenge!"

She looked at him wearily "well I'll see you next month to follow up on how things are going, and you are welcome to call or email me at any time."

"I will, thank you." He held out his hand "it was nice meeting you Ms. Torres-Rosario."

She shook the offered hand, "and you as well Mr. Sanders." Thomas showed her out and let out a sigh of relief, heading upstairs to check up on Patton and Virgil.

-----

Virgil followed his new foster brother upstairs leaving the two adults in the living room. Once upstairs he was lead down a long hallway. As they walked Patton showed Virgil where Thomas' room was along with the guest room and the office where Thomas used when working on things for his job. The two soon reached a door that was Patton's room and a couple steps away there reach another door.

"All right kiddo!" He said pushing open the door "this is your room."

Virgil walked inside the bedroom and it was nice, a lot nicer than some of the other rooms he's had. In the center, there was a queen-sized bed draped with a pale yellow comforter with a couple of throw pillows in the same color. A brown wooden desk was up against the left wall with a big, blank bulletin board hanging above it. In the center of the right wall was the closet door with a hook on the back. A second door was near the desk.

Patton bounded into the bedroom after him; he must have seen me looking at the second door that was along the right wall.

"That's the bathroom," he explained, "We share one, your side is closest to your room." Virgil gave a small nod before moving to put his bags on the bed. "Do you need help unpacking?"

Virgil shook his head and, finally, Patton left.

-------

Once Virgil was sure Patton was gone he unzipped his duffle bag and pulled out the few clothes he owned. Moving to the closet he put them up; there was also a small dresser inside so he placed my pajamas, underwear, and socks in there.

Walking back into the room Virgil pulled out a picture frame from his backpack, it was a photo of his mother that was taken about seven years ago. From before she had gotten sick, she looked so happy. She didn't look like the frail and sick woman that Virgil remembered her to be.

After setting the frame on the nightstand Virgil grabbed his backpack and placed it on the chair, reaching inside he pulled out a stack of sketchbooks and notebooks and put them away in one of the desk drawers. When that was done he took the box with pencils in it and put it in the second drawer.

When Virgil was done unpacking he hung his backpack on the desk chair and shoved the duffle under the bed, even though Virgil knew it a few weeks before he would only be pulling it out again.

The teen yawned as he sat down. Today has been a long day; curling up on the bed and pulling my hoodie around me, allowing my exhaustion and lack of sleep to get the better of him. Virgil fell asleep.
