FRIEND

The table on the balcony

Two cups

I stare

A coffee that will never go

(You did)

I scream

Never mind the tears

They come and mostly dry

This cup reminding

Words unsaid this pause

The sunlight just so right so wrong

We loved the summer

Now only one of us bathes in its heat

The other

Shivering otherworldly

I should have kept

The cup half-drunk the way you left it

But the optimist in me

Spilled it out

It sits filling with thunder rain

And I sit across talking as usual

I feel your grin still

(Give up old girl he ain't ever coming)

The cup and I keeping company

And knowing you are right
