Chapter 23
I've kinda been looking forward to this one!
Let's go.
Martyn was already planning how he was going to out-play Herobrine before he walked into the room behind Bdubs.
He'd planned it since he saw BigB and Lizzie's deaths come up in chat.
He wasn't going to let Herobrine win.
'Martyn.' The glitch smiled thinly at him. He glared back. It wasn't hard for him to see Scar's face on the enemy, he realised, as his mind flashed back to Third-life. Bdubs stopped, halfway down the hallway, and Martyn stopped just behind. He'd already been given more freedom than Joel had. He'd been trusted to just walk behind, while his friend had been dragged along against his will.
It made him uneasy.
'Martyn Littlewood.' Herobrine began.
'Herobrine.' He replied with equal courteousness.
'Would you like to join me?'
'What's in it for me if I do, and if I don't?'
Herobrine smiled again, as if he'd been waiting for this bit. A dog slunk out from behind the glitch's throne, and whined, as if in warning.
Joel.
Apparently not noticing, or not caring, about the canine third-lifer, Herobrine answered with a question of his own.
'Would you like to be a king?'
Whatever Martyn had been expecting, it wasn't that. He frowned, trying to find the catch.
'Why do you ask?'
'Because I want a co-leader.'
'You already have Cub and Bdubs. And if you want me to kill either of them, I refuse.'
'Why do you expect there to be a catch?' sighed Herobrine. 'There's only a catch if you first refuse me. Because then I can't trust you.'
'That... makes sense.' Heart racing, Martyn realised he had an out.
Another smile.
'Ren was always king in that Third Life thing you did. From Scar's memories, I can see that you desperately wanted to be in charge of something. But you let him get all the praise. He was tehe red king. You were just his bard, telling jokes and helping him in his fights.'
'I... had power.'
'How much?'
'Enough.'
'I know you wanted more. And I can give you all you ever wanted here. Now. You are also half-watcher, right?'
'Yes. But I don't want to be a full watcher. And surely a vexling like yourself wouldn't want a watcher on your side.'
'I wouldn't mind either way.' Herobrine confessed. 'But I can give you all the powers of a watcher, without the influence and control of the others.'
Martyn paused at this. Whether he was pulling at random strings or not, the glitch was certainly convincing. How much had he secretly wished for the ability to spy on others without using actual watcher magic? How much had he wanted to be in charge of something?
'So, will you accept my offer?'
Yes. Yes, you will. And you can help the others with it. If they really need help. Surely they can work it out on their own.
Martyn smiled, stepping forwards. As if he needed any further enticing, Cleo appeared from a door to the left of Herobrine, holding a folded cloak fit for royalty, and a beautifully made golden crown.
It could be his.
He needed it.
More than the others needed him.
Hand outstretched, grinning, Martyn spoke.
'I accept your deal.'
*Starts writing this next bit.*
*pauses*
Imma draw Martyn instead.
It felt like hours between Bdubs leaving with Martyn and returning alone. Jimmy and Scott sat alone in the prison that they used to share with Joel and Martyn. BigB was now dead. Skizz was gone.
Everything was going wrong.
'Your turn, lovebirds.'
Scott looked over at Jimmy, then back at Bdubs.'
'Why should I do what you say?'
'Wh- because it'll be worst if you don't.'
'Then let's see what worst looks like.' Jimmy challenged. With a hmph, Bdubs turned, calling,
'They're not coming, your Highness. Maybe you'll be able to encourage them.'
'Your highness? How has Herobrine got this much of an e...go...' Jimmy promptly shut up as Martyn walked down the steps, dressed like a king.
Traitor.
'TRAITOR!' Jimmy screamed. 'You F***ING TRAITOR! WHY DID YOU JOIN HIM?!'
'He gave me all I wanted.' Martyn replied simply, shrugging. 'Now, are you going to do what Herobrine wants, or are you going to continue moping around in this cage for the rest of your life?'
'Fine. We'll come. But I'll kill you later.'
'We both will.' Scott added, walking out behind his platonic husband. The two were marched up into the main room of the building, almost blinded by the light. Herobrine watched them from his throne, Martyn-the-traitor quickly joining him.
'Well. Jimmy, Scott. You're finally here. And I can give you freedom. I can let you go free and do whatever you want with your life.'
The two exchanged a suspicious glance.
'Why would you do that?'
'I hadn't finished.' Herobrine cut off. 'But I can only give it to one of you. And I'm bad at making decisions. So I'll let you do it for me. Phantom, give them each a sword.'
Bdubs disappeared, returning with a pair of diamond swords, chucking them towards the flower husbands. Jimmy picked his up. Scott stared down at his.
'So, what are we supposed to do with these other than killing you?'
'Like I said, only one of you can go free. And you're going to have to fight for your freedom. Winner goes free. Loser, well the loser's already dead.'
'I'm not fighting.' Scott decided quickly. 'I'm not fighting him. Jimmy, you can just kill me.'
'I'm not killing you!'
'Well one of us has to die, and I'm not killing you.'
'Neither am I!'
'Phantom, force them to fight.'
Bdubs stepped forwards, his own sword drawn, failing to hide his reluctance as he shoved Scott to the ground.
'Fight, or I'll just kill him.'
'Fine.' Jimmy walked away. 'I'll have my freedom.'
'Etho! Stop him!'
The ninja leapt down from the rafters, landing in front of Jimmy, forcing him back. Bdubs still held his sword to Scott's neck.
'If you won't fight, then I'll just force you to decide. You both must agree on who to kill. And every ten seconds you can't make up your minds... well, I heard pain was a good way to get people to do what you want.'
'Jimmy, just pick me.' Scott demanded. 'I'm not letting you die.'
'I'm not living with the guilt of killing you!'
'You're not the one killing me! Bdubs is!'
'I'm still making the choice!'
'Decisions, decisions...'
'F*** off, Herobrine. Scott, I'm not going to let you- F**K!' Jimmy howled in pain as Etho stabbed through his arm with a knife.
'Sorry. It just slipped...'
Scott lunged at Etho, but was held back by Bdubs. The sword slipped and blood slid down his neck.
'You're Not getting away.' Phantom snarled.
'Scott, just let him kill me. I'm in agony anyway.' Jimmy bit back a scream of pain,
'No!'
'Scott! Please! I don't want to live like this! If you want me to feel better, accept that I'm going to die!' Tears streamed down Jimmy's face. Scott watched, helpless, before sighing.
'Fine. We both vote for... for Jimmy.' He muttered. Jimmy nodded.
'Phantom, kill Scott.'
'NO!' Jimmy screeched his friend's name, breaking free of Etho's grip and racing towards where Bdubs had just slit Scott's throat, letting him drop to the ground, choking. 'Please... don't die on me.'
'Jimmy, I...' Scott Major slumped over, dead, leaving Jimmy alone, howling his name into the silence.
I like angst.
