Chapter 12
I've been looking back through old stories I wrote a few years ago to figure out a timeline of writing stuff, and I found 3000+ word story that took me 2 months to write.
I've written more that in a day before.
Now, angst time!
Procrastination: hey, it's been a while since you looked up convex art on google. Would you like to do that instead?
Me: yes
Impulse still didn't know.
It was the one thing Tango found relief in as the days passed by. Impulse didn't know about the magic, and that he burnt down the house. And after a (very) long strider ride back to hermit society, the half-blaze had managed to get out of the nether.
Tango had been the one to find Zedaph's body as well, and buried it disappointingly unceremoniously in his base, with a sign on the door saying what had happened. With a final tearful look back, he flew away, trying not to cry. Zedaph was dead. Zedaph was dead. Permadead. Never coming back.
He landed back in his base, just as another message appeared in chat. He looked down, seeing a private message from Impulse.
Impulse whispered to you: if you're still around, I'm meeting to discuss plans for defeating Scar.
He didn't reply, not wanting to be the one to reveal the hard news to his best friend that Zed's death was permadeath. Instead, he entered Fifi's cave, heading down to the storage system, finding a bed, and sleeping.
Impulse paced the main area of his factory alone. Several other hermits would be coming to his meeting. He didn't know if Tango was among them. He didn't know if Tango was even alive still. He hadn't seen his friend since the incident in the nether. And now Zedaph was apparently dead, Bdubs was on Scar's side, and everything was going wrong.
He remained there for a few more moments, waiting. Would anyone actually make it? He'd thought the guys over at Horsehead Farm had been interested, but no one arrived. Mumbo? He'd promised to come when asked, but he'd barely been since since Grian disappeared and...
'Hey... Impulse...' The hermit looked up sharply to see Bdubs, looking very awkward and phantom-y.
He drew his sword, pointing it at the enemy.
'Get away!' He snapped. 'Why are you here?!'
'Hero wanted me to do this. This isn't my choice. He made me come to your base.'
'Hero?'
'Herobrine.'
'What?! Bdubs, you know you're the only person on this server that actually still believes the Herobrine is real.'
'But he is! And he's controlling Scar. That's why he's been acting so weird. Herobrine's controlling him.'
'Yeah, right. How many people have you convinced with that argument?'
'Why else would Scar be trying to kill us?!'
'He did it before! In season 5!'
'Well, Cub's not with him this time. And it's not anything to do with the Convex.'
Impulse refused to back down, standing his ground. Suddenly, there was a sharp sting in his neck. He quickly became dizzy, while Bdubs watched, hiding his emotion.
'I told you he wanted me to come to your base.'
'Why are you...' Impulse questioned, before he fell unconscious.
Tango followed Bdubs into the room, confused and suspicious. His fellow wide-eyed hermit and boomer had said nothing since the request to come to Scar's base. The door closed quickly behind them, and Tango looked back, knowing immediately that something was wrong.
The walls, ceiling, and floor were completely made of stone. The only other thing in the room was a lever, right in front of him. Bdubs stood to the side, watching, as the voice that used to be Scar's filled the space.
'Hello, Tango. This is your last chance to join us before we make you join us.'
'No. Why would I join you?'
'You'll find out very soon.'
The voice disappeared again. Tango glared at Bdubs. The other hermit didn't look at him.
'Alright, what is this place?' He interrogated. 'Why am I here?'
'Tango?!' He froze at the sound of Impulse's voice, slowly facing the wall with the lever on. His friend was behind there.
WHY WAS IMPULSE BEHIND THERE?
'Impulse? Why are you here?'
'I don't know! Why are you here?! What's going on?'
'What is this?' Tango turned on Bdubs. Herobrine answered instead.
'Don't worry. If you join us, he'll be safe. If not... well, pull the lever and you'll find out.'
'Tango? Are you still there?'
'Yeah? Wait, can't you hear him?'
'Who?'
'Herobrine. Scar.'
'No?'
Tango paced the length of the room, figuring out what was going on.
'Tell me what happens when I pull the lever.' He asked.
'The timer will begin when I tell you. Are you sure you wouldn't want to talk to him first?'
'What timer?'
'Fine. I'll tell you.' There was a sound of pistons above Impulse's room. 'When you pull the lever, I'll release something that will put your friend out his misery very quickly.'
'Tango, what have you done?!' Impulse's panicked voice came through again. 'Please! Stop this!'
'What happened?'
'There's an Evoker in here with me. Please! It's trying to kill me! There are Vexes everywhere!'
'Just so you know, I turned off his respawn. And he doesn't know. He has no idea that you're in charge of his death. And if you tell him... there's no going back. So. The choice is here. Kill your best friend without him knowing why you did it, or join me.'
'You f****g monster.' Tango snarled back. 'You F*****G MONSTER!'
'Well?'
'Tango, why are you doing this? What did I do to you?'
'Impulse... This isn't...'
'Is it because I left you in the nether? Were you still alive? If this is my fault I'm sorry. I'm sorry for everything I've done.'
'No! Impulse, please...'
'I thought you were my friend...'
'No, I'm sorry. I burnt down your starter base. I'm half blaze. I went to Gem's base with Bdubs and Keralis and she gave me Blaze magic. I survived in the nether because I'm resistant to fire. That's why. But I didn't want you to know. Because... because... I'm just a coward. I was scared you'd get mad at me. I'm sorry. I'm sorry for it all.'
Silence.
'Tango?'
'Y...yeah?'
'Are you going to kill me?'
'No!' Tango burst out. 'Why would I kill you?!'
'Scar said you were going to kill me. Scar told me you did this. I...is that true?'
'No! I'm not going to...' Tango shut up, realising he was probably lying. He knew he didn't want to join Herobrine's side. He didn't want to kill anyone, or work for the enemy. He wanted to fight back. He didn't want to give Herobrine what he wanted. But that would mean he'd have to kill Impulse.
'I'm sorry...' his closest friend whimpered. 'I'm so, sorry. Please... stop this... I'll give you everything. I'll... I'll blow up my own base if it means I get out of this place alive. I'll give you all my diamonds. I'll build your base for you...' The list of deals continued, and Tango tried to desperately block it out. His life or Impulse's.
'Please... if you're going to kill me, just do it.'
It was the final nail in the coffin. Tango grasped the lever, but didn't pull it.
'Impulse... I... I'm sorry... I'm so sorry. You're an amazing friend. You've always been an amazing friend. I don't want to do this.' Tango wept. 'I just don't want to do this...'
'Then why did you?'
'I'm sorry.'
He pulled the lever.
'Tango, what's... what's happening? Tango? Are you there? Tango! Please!'
He didn't reply.
'Please... there's lava everywhere. I can't escape. Tango! Speak to me! Please...'
It seemed like years until the death message came into chat. Tango sat by the wall, weeping, as Herobrine's voice came again.
'Tango... why did you kill him? I thought he was your friend.'
'You said...'
'I never said I was going to kill him.'
The horrible truth sunk in.
'No...'
'It's amazing that you just assumed that he was going to die...'
'Shut up. Just shut up, you f*****g monster.'
'Why? Why did you do it? He was begging for you to keep him alive...'
'SHUT UP!' Tango screamed, fire lighting his hands, 'JUST SHUT THE F*** UP! YOU DON'T DESERVE TO SPEAK!' He sobbed, clawing at the wall, wanting to burn the entire place to the ground.
'Calm down, Blaze. You're going to run out of energy.'
'Let me out...' Tango pleaded back.
'Oh, no... why would I let such a dangerous creature like you out? You're staying here until you join us,'
1400 words :)
