An Act of Benevolence

Something held me up by the neck with large, sharp hands. Nails dug into my neck, causing blood to trickle down. I looked around to see many worried figures attempting to attack whatever was holding me. Why does this feel.. Nostalgic.

I feel like.. this has happened before. I feel like.. it's going to happen..

Then my world went black.

I woke up to the bright orange rays of the sun leaking into my eyes. I hesitantly sat up and let my eyes adjust to the bright scenery of my room.

It was [F/C] and had random doodles hung all over the place in random bunches. Not to mention, it also had a few photos of me and my friends from the previous city I was in. Though, that was all, since I was still moving in. There weren't too many decorations since I haven't been here all that long. I also haven't exactly been looking for decorations either.

I sighed and swung my body off of the bed and hopped into the bathroom. After showering for about 10 minutes I got out and dried myself off. I then checked my closet for anything that looks semi-decent. I'm not a big fashion person. I just wear what I think is comfortable.

After pushing everything aside, I finally found something that suits today's weather. It was a pastel yellow hoodie with light blue-white jeans. A few rips were made in them for some effect, which I don't really mind. All I was looking for was something warm that could hold up against the chilly weather outside, and this just-so-happened to be what I found. After I put that on, I slid on some white Adidas and called it a fit.

Walking over to the bathroom once again, I brushed my teeth and applied some makeup. Not a lot, but enough to cover up anything I was insecure about. Finally, to pull the look all together I put my hair into a ponytail. I smiled at myself in the mirror, doing finger guns to help boost my confidence. At this point it's become a ritual that has to be done everyday in the morning.

I grabbed my leather satchel and threw it across my shoulder. A slight growl came from my stomach. I shrugged and padded over to the door. Moments after opening it, a large breeze came through.

"Woah, good thing I put my hair up today," I laughed.

I stepped outside and closed the door behind me, shoving my hands in my hoodie's pocket. I pulled out my earphones and put them in my ears, putting on some slowed music. After that, I was ready to go.

I walked around the city a bit, though I was planning to go to the bakery first thing. After all, I've heard that it had some delicious food and I'm down for that. I continued following the path to the shopping district of the city. I'd take a shortcut, but I still don't know this area very well. So, following the signs I go!

After about twenty five minutes, I found myself standing in front of the bakery. I looked at the  board above the door. Soft, mellow colors were splashed across in blotches across the originally white board and on top of all the paint read, "Benevolent's Bakery."

Large windows covered the entrance, it seemed as though they were the walls themselves. A few inspiring quotes were written on papers and boards that were taped or hung on the windows. Some included, "Take it easy," "Be yourself," and such. You know, the sappy stuff that schools would usually display on the walls in the hallways.

Another cool breeze came by and I shivered, I might as well just head in. I thought, pulling open the door.

Immediately, a blast of flavor itself hit me. An amazing aroma swirled around in the air and filled my senses, causing my mouth to water slightly. I gulped and walked toward the friendly man behind the counter. He waved at me as I approached, fixing his posture.

"Hello, and welcome to Benevolent's Bakery! What can I serve you today?" he chirped.

"Ah, I'll take a.. [F/F] cupcake please." I replied.

He nodded, going behind the glass display and taking out a cupcake. I whipped out my wallet, taking out three dollars and preparing to pay. He came back with the same welcoming smile he had when I entered the establishment.

He slid the cupcake to me in a small, clear box. Based on just the smell alone, I could tell it was freshly baked. I placed my money on the counter and gazed at him gratefully. "Thank you so much, sir."

He shot me a confused stare. "Don't you know the policy here?"

I flinched. "Sorry?"

His stern, baffled expression turned into a smirk. "First time customers don't pay, dear," He pushed the money back to me.

"O-Oh," I nodded, hesitantly taking the cash back and putting it into my pocket.

"So, darling, what's your name?"

"Er.. It's [Y/N],"

He nodded. "That's a wonderful name! I'm [OPERATIVE] Benevolent_Day, pleased to meet you!"

"[OPERATIVE]?" I asked.

"Pardon? Do you not know what they are? Or, per se, what they do in the city?"

I shake my head. "No, not really. I'm actually new here. I moved like a week ago."

"Ah! All right. I'll explain it to you. [OPERATIVES] are people in the city who usually protect it from invaders. In a way, we're sort of like the government. However, we aren't all that strict! We don't create the laws, either. We just enforce them."

"Oh, so like policemen!"

He let out a "hm," before continuing. "Yes, pretty much, just with a bit more authority."

"That's amazing-!"

Then my stomach growled once again. My face flushed a bit but he just smiled, "I'm sorry for taking up your time! You should eat now,"

I giggled nervously. "Hah, yeah,"

I strode over to a table in a corner. It was a table for two with wooden chairs. The holes in the chairs were replaced with a little hearts in the very center. I sat down at the white, circle-shaped table and placed the pastry container down. I took in the appearance of the building I was in. A light, almost white pink covered the walls and a streak of darker pink was painted in the very center. Random hearts were painted across the areas, giving a very appealing theme.

I smiled, popping open the lid to the box the cupcake was in and raising it to my mouth. I was about to bite into it when I started getting the feeling that I was being watched. I closed my mouth and lowered my arms, looking around. But, I couldn't see anyone. Not even Benevolent, which kind of seemed suspicious.

After a few seconds of looking at my surroundings, I sighed and looked back ahead of me. That's when I saw Benevolent, right in front of me, in the chair that used to be empty. I flinched, surprised at his sudden appearance. He waved at me.

"Well? Aren't you going to eat it?" he chuckled.

"Yeah, but I don't really like being watched when I eat," I replied flatly.

He bobbed his head up and down. "I see, I see. Well, be sure to give me your review on it! I enjoy hearing what people have to say about my pastries. I'm always looking forward to criticism to make them better!"

I sigh, lifting my cupcake back to my mouth. I gazed out of the window to the now bright scenery outside. "You're a strange fellow,"

He hummed in agreement. I took a bite of my cupcake and my eyes dazzled. I quietly started eating quicker, taking small bites at a time to savor the flavor. After about 2 minutes of me just nibbling at it, I finally finished it.

"Well? Was it good?" Benevolent questioned.

I looked over at him. I wanted so badly to just burst out screaming how good it was, but that'd be a little too much.

"Yeah, it was delicious," I mumbled. "Thank you."

He laughed. "That's amazing to hear! I'm so glad you enjoyed it!"

"I'll be sure to visit every time in the morning-"

"Already making plans for your morning routine?" he cooed.

"Yep. That's exactly what's happening,"

He smiled at me. I took this moment to identify his features. He seemed about 5'5, about [ quantity ] inches [ shorter/taller ] than me. He had soft-brown hair which curled at the ends, and his eyes were abnormally pink. Perhaps they were contacts, but I didn't really care to ask. His uniform consisted of a soft pink vest with a long white-sleeved blouse under it. He wore silver-beige cargo pants and a pair of random tennis-shoes. On top of it all, he wore a pink pork pie hat with a horse figurine supposedly glued on the top of it. It was a strange, yet pleasing look.

I tucked my arms into my hoodie, then whipping out my phone. "Want to watch some memes?"

Benevolent smiled at me, "You bet! Just make sure they're good ones!"

We both scooted our chairs beside each other and I turned on the video, preparing myself to cringe and laugh at the same time.

We watched memes for a solid hour and a half, we even played some games together. I checked the time on my phone and sighed. "Ah, I'll have to be leaving. I have to get furniture and whatnot,"

Benevolent gave me a sad, yet understanding smile. "Oh, all right! That's completely fine, just be sure to visit tomorrow!"

I smirked, sliding out of my chair. "You know I will,"

Benevolent sort of walked me to the door, as though he were a puppy that didn't want to leave its owner. I was about to push open the door when I reconsidered.

I giggled, walking over to Benevolent and hugging him. I might as well hug my new friend, right?

His body stiffened in the first few moments, but he soon returned my embrace. We both let go after about four seconds, and it was easily noticeable that he felt much happier than before.

"I'll see you later, yeah?" I asked, pushing open the glass door.

"You know you will!"
