Chapter Two: Burnt Toast and a Messy Kitchen

Something soft and warm batted at my face a few times before a quiet meow rang clear through the silence of the room. With a groan I rolled over a snuggled closer into the blankets, sighing in enjoyment at the warmth that the provided me. I faintly heard the jingle of a bell before the mass of fur headbutted my nose.

"Link... Go away..." I grumbled irritatedly, rubbing my nose and rolling back over, my back now facing the cat who I thought was mine until said cat headbutted the back of my head.

"Link!" I shouted, more annoyed now as I sat up and peered down at the cat before realizing that it looked nothing like my Link. It was an orange tabby with white paws, then the events from last night surfaced into my mind.

"Scooby..." With a sigh I scooped the small cat up into my arms and crawled out of bed, instantly wishing that I had stayed wrapped up in my fortress of warmth. Shivering, I set the cat down on the ground as I made my way into the small bathroom that was attached to the bedroom. Stripping off my clothes I ran myself a nice hot shower.

Seeing as I didn't bring any extra clothes with me, I had no choice but to re-wear the clothes from the previous day. I headed back into the spare room and dug through my bag that I had carried in the night before. Finding that I had a comb and letting out a quiet 'ah-ha!'  of achievement, I quickly ran it through my tangled mess of hair before digging through my bag once again in hopes that I would've had a toothbrush or something. It was a longshot but in the end I found that I had some of those mini toothbrushes in the bag for whatever reason.

Heading back into the bathroom to finish getting ready. I then remembered why I had packed those, it was because I had planned on going out with a few friends, but I also had a job interview right around the same time and didn't have time to go back home and make myself look as presentable as I would've liked, I packed those in my bag. The interview had gone over well but someone else got the position. After finishing the daily routine, I headed downstairs, the scent of something burning instantly flooding my senses and I headed in the direction of where I thought the kitchen was.

"Cooking not going so well for you this morning?" I teased as I walked into the kitchen, careful to not make anymore of a mess.

"Well... I don't usually cook... I just grab something from like a fast food place or something like that in the morning." He rubbed the back of his neck in embarrassment.

"Really?" I asked before searching for a mop to clean up the mess that had been made in the kitchen.

"It's in the closet over there, but yes, I have not cooked breakfast in years." He said while grabbing some rags and dampening them with lukewarm water to clean off the countertops.

"Thank you." I said, pulling out the mop, a bucket and a cleaning mixture that went into the water. With a determined smile, I added the cleaning mixture into the bucket and then filled it up with water and began to mop up the floor.

A few minutes had passed by and the kitchen was back to its original clean state. I had even cleaned off Brian's glasses for him while he went to get a shower to rinse the flour out of his hair. I had told him that I would make breakfast instead, that way we wouldn't have another messy kitchen to clean up. I had figured out the menu for this morning would consist of pancakes, hashbrowns and bacon. Cause I mean come on, who doesn't love bacon?

"I'm back." I heard a deep voice mumble from behind me, a small smile slipped onto my face and I turned to face him. A blush creeped up my neck and onto my features as I looked at his choice for clothes today. Which was a shirt that hugged his frame a bit, and a pair of jeans that fit him perfectly. He cleared his throat, breaking me out of the trance I had seemed to be in. With a blush I motioned to the plates filled with food that were on the table. "Breakfast is ready." I managed to say, despite the embarrassment I felt at the moment for checking out my friend. We sat at the table and began to eat.

Breakfast was ate in silence, it wasn't awkward, it was a comfortable silence. A small smile slipped onto my face as I thought about the lovely morning wake up call I got from Scooby.

"I see Scooby has settled in really well." I said nonchalantly, munching on a piece of bacon as I stated the simple sentence.

"He has settled in really well, the little devil tried to get a hold of the solar powered phone charger I had made yesterday. I made sure he had his own little cat room and everything." Brian replied back with a smile.

"That's great to hear honestly, sometimes the cats have such a hard time settling into a new home, it could take them weeks but sometimes they settle in as soon as you let them free to roam the house." I said matter-of-factly.

"Yeah... But he's great, he kept me company in my office yesterday while I waited for you. There's something that I want to show you then." He said with a smile.

"Alright." I replied back, then comfortable silence settled down onto us once again as we finished eating the rest of breakfast. Afterwards he helped me with the dishes which made cleaning up a bit easier this time around.

After the dishes were done and the counters were cleaned yet again, he nudged me playfully, like he used to do when he wanted my attention.

"Yes?" I asked, putting the last of the dishes away.

"I want to show you something." He said, taking my hand in his after I had put the plate away. He then lead me out the back door and to a shed that looked like it had definitely seen better days. He pulled out a key ring from his pocket and then unlocked the door after finding the right key. He flipped the light switch on that was right beside the door and then lead me inside. In the center was an old wooden boat that looked as if it was being patched up. Recognition spread through me as I remembered the boat as the one that he had spent his entire junior and senior year working on in high school.

"You still have that boat?" I asked, walking up to it and looking it over.

"Yeah, it needed some repairs and it's actually a small motor boat now. It even has a remote control." He said proudly with a smile.

"I remember that I got nervous that day when you said that you needed to get something. It was the first time I was going to your house and it took you forever to meet me back at my locker. I thought you had forgotten about me and you weren't responding to the text I had sent you." I said with a smile, remembering that day as if it were yesterday.

"I remember when I had finally got to your locker, you looked slightly panicked but it went away as soon as you saw me and when we got to my car, you helped me load it up into the trunk. I also remember that my car decided to nearly stall on me on the highway." He added on with a smile.

"I remember seeing your panicked face cause my dad had told you the night before to make sure to take care of me, but thankfully the car didn't break down." I replied back.

"That was terrifying, I had thought that we were going to get into an accident." He grimaced at the memory.

"I had thought that too." I added on, also grimacing at the memory of it all, it was a terrible day.

I stood at my locker, tapping my foot impatiently as I waited for Brian to show up. I checked my phone once again even though I knew he hadn't texted me back yet.

'What if he forgot about me?' Ran through my mind about a million times before I heard footsteps coming down the hallway. I looked up to see Brian carrying a wooden boat, one that was rather small and without a doubt probably fit into the car, relief flooded through my system and a smile slipped onto my features.

"Hey, sorry that I took so long, will you help me load this up then?" He asked as he then lead me towards the school parking lot.

"Of course." I chirped, holding open the large glass door so that he could walk through.

"Thanks." He smiled, then walked to his car which wasn't parked too terribly far from the school. He unlocked it and then turned towards me. "Could you open the trunk for me please?" He asked sweetly.

"Sure thing." I answered as I opened the trunk for him, then helped him load the boat into the back. After it was all loaded up he shut the trunk.

"Thank you." He said as he walked over to the driver's side.

"No problem." I said as I opened the passenger door and slid into the seat, immediately buckling up.

"You ready?" He asked as he started the car up.

"Ready whenever you are." I replied with a smile. He pulled out of the parking lot and then drove down the road. Right as he was making a left turn, the car faltered and seemed to have shut off momentarily. A look of panic crossed his features as we had been in the middle of a major intersection. The car started back up and continued to drive normally for the remainder of the trip, relief slipped into him and he seemed to relax after the car had started working normally once again.

"So do you work today?" Brian asked, bringing me back to the present.

It took me a moment to process the question after having been brought back from the memory that took hold of me. "No, today is the only day that I have off each week. It's my rest day."

"Great. So what do you think about doing something crazy?" He asked.

"I'm up for anything, including doing something crazy. But what kind of crazy?" I asked curiously.

"Like having a picnic in the park after it has snowed kind of crazy." Brian confirmed.
