Chapter Three: A Picnic in the Snow
Brian had gathered all of the necessary items that he thought would be fit for a picnic. Of course he seemed to think that a picnic in the snow would be the best way to go about spending the day together, not that I was complaining. After he had put everything in a small cooler, we set off.
The crunch of the snow double as we walked to my truck, the roads had been cleared very early this morning and were suitable for driving. I unlocked the doors and set the cooler in the middle before getting into the driver's side while he was getting into the passenger's side. After we both got in and buckled up I adjusted the mirror and then smiled over at him.
"You ready?" He asked, a look of excitement plastered to his features.
"Ready whenever you are." I replied back, even though I wasn't a fan of the cold, his excitement was rubbing off on me.
I peeled out of the driveway and drove along a few back roads that were unfamiliar to me, seeing as I had never been in this area before, and Brian playing the navigator role. He was even trying to do the robot voice that the navigators do on the phone.
"Turn right up ahead, then make a sharp left onto the gravel road." He spoke, mimicking the robot navigators.
I laughed quietly, following his directions flawlessly until my truck hit a patch of black ice and I nearly lost control of it. Panic rose up within me until I got it back under control and let out a sigh of relief, looking over at Brian.
"Are you okay?" I asked worriedly.
"I'm perfectly fine, are you okay?" He asked just as worried as I was.
"Yeah, I'm fine. More so worried about you than I am me at the moment." I said, relaxing a bit as I started to drive again.
"I was more so worried about you." He said calmly, a faint pink color tinting his cheeks.
"I figured as much, you've always seemed to be more concerned about other people rather than yourself." I replied back, being pulled back into a distant memory.
"Yeah..." He said, but it seemed as if it was muffled as I drove along, thinking about the countless times he had tried to comfort me even if he wasn't the best at it.
I sat slumped against the lockers, another fight had occurred between Greg and I because he couldn't accept the fact that I was friends with other people. I sniffled quietly and hid my face against my sweatshirt, having planned on walking home after school since it had been a nice spring day. A shadow obscured my view and I looked up at the tall figure in front of me to see Brian wearing a worried expression.
"What happened?" He asked as he sat beside me, wrapping an arm around my shoulder and tugging me up against him. His concern only seemed to grow more when I didn't respond right away.
"Greg again... He keeps finding faults with every single one of my friends and keeps telling me to not be friends with them and then making a big deal about it when I go and hang out with them. It's like he can't accept the fact that I'm friends with other people. I told him that it seems that way and he flipped out on me and started yelling at me. Saying that I'm not being a very good friend with the way that I'm acting towards him and how he feels about MY friends. Not only that, he accused me of being mad at him when he had blatantly ignored me after I had been talking to Cam. Then he starts talking to somebody else and then just texts me saying 'What's your problem? Ignoring me like that.' and then after I explained that I wasn't mad, he still continued to accuse me of it." I answered simply, more frustrated than before.
"Are you mad at him?" Brian prodded, trying to get a deeper understanding of why I was upset in the first place.
"Yes actually I am right now. I really don't even want to talk to him anymore, but that proves to be more difficult than anything else right now. I just... I don't know what to do, like he has his moments where he can be a great friend but... There are more tears than smiles in this friendship." I answered yet again, sighing softly but then laughing quietly. "I'm pathetic aren't I?" I asked, taking a glance up at him.
"You're not pathetic. You're just a little lost right now. I'm sure you'll figure it out eventually." He said, smiling faintly.
"I'd rather figure it out sooner rather than later. I've been trying to." I sighed, wriggling away from him and then standing up. "It is after school hours. I better get going." I said softly.
"I can give you a ride home." He offered, to which I responded with a shake of my head.
"It's okay, it's a nice day out and I want to walk home." I smiled faintly before walking towards the front doors of the building with Brian tagging along beside me.
"Hey, prom is coming up." Brian said nonchalantly while taking his keys out of his pocket.
"Yeah, I know." I responded back before asking. "Are you going?"
"Yeah, a few of my friends and I are all going." He responded to the question easily. "How about you?" He asked.
"I'm not sure yet, I guess I'll be going if someone asks me to it. Why do you ask?" I questioned him.
"No reason." He answered while tugging me into a hug, holding me there a moment or two longer than he usually did before he released me and ruffled my hair. "I'll see you later Shortie." He teased playfully which lifted my spirits a bit.
"You're one to talk, you're still short even for a guy." I teased back before heading out the front doors and beginning my long walk home.
"Hey, we're here." Brian said from beside me. I blinked, being pulled out of the memory once again as I pulled into a gravel parking lot. A giant lake sat in front of us, frozen solid with a Willow trees growing beside it. Their long branches coated in a fine layer of ice, which reflected the sunlight, making it actually look really pretty.
"Alright, let's do this." I said as my stomach grumbled in response which caused both of us to burst out laughing. It took us a few moments to settle down again, but afterwards we grabbed the cooler and hopped out of the truck. I locked it and then followed him down to the lake. Seeing as there was no picnic tables around, he pulled out a picnic blanket and smiled.
"This should work right?" He asked as he laid it out in the small patch of grass that he had moved the snow away from.
"I believe that it'll work." I answered before setting the cooler down on the blanket, Brian settled himself down at one end of the blanket while I sat at the other end. He pulled out two sodas and handed me one.
"I also packed like a few sandwiches and stuff. In case ya know..." He said, opening the bottle of soda up and taking a swig out of it while I did the same.
"Alright, thanks." I smiled before smirking evilly. Taking a small pile of snow and rolling it into a snowball, while he was turned I threw it at him. It hit back with a thwack! And he turned to look at me.
"What?" I asked innocently.
"Did you throw that snowball at me?" He asked, even though there was no one else here.
"Why on earth would I do that?" I asked yet again.
"Because I know you and it is definitely something I wouldn't put past you." Brian replied.
"I have no clue what you are talking about, I wouldn't do that to you." I smiled sweetly before Brian made a snowball of his own and chucked it at me. It hit my chest and I fell back dramatically.
"Oh no! I've been hit! Tell my cat I love him." I groaned out rather dramatically while giggling.
Brian came into view as he stood over me with a smile on his face. "You are a piece of work." He said.
"I know, I'm great aren't I?" I said teasingly before getting up and poking his nose teasingly.
"Yeah, yeah." He said with a roll of his eyes before I threw another snowball at him.
"Oh it is so on." He smirked while gathering up snow to make yet another snowball, a chuckle leaving him.
What was supposed to be a nice picnic in the snow, turned into an all out snowball fight, we even had a few of the neighboring kids joining in on our antics. We had split into multiple teams and by the time that we had left, there were snow forts all over the place. We were still chuckling by the time we had left, thoroughly having enjoyed ourselves. The kids had seemed disappointed that we left, but we had promised we'd be back another day which made them much more okay with us leaving.
"That was fun." I said, pulling into Brian's driveway and parking the truck.
"It definitely was, we'll have to do that again." He said with a smile, he reached over and hugged me tightly.
"Thank you for the fun day. I really enjoyed myself, it's been awhile since I've done something like that." He said sincerely.
"I enjoyed myself too, and I'm looking forward to that next time." I replied back sincerely as well.
"Drive safe and text me to let me know when you get home, so that I know that you made it safely." He said sternly.
"Yes sir." I smiled, he then took the cooler and hopped out of the truck. I watched him walk up to his door and then unlock and walk inside. Knowing that he was now back home safely, I pulled out of the driveway and and headed back home myself.
It only took me a few minutes to get back to my apartment now that I knew where he lived. Parking back in my usual spot and getting out, I locked my truck up and then headed into the building. Opening the door the warm air encased me and felt like heaven as I made the climb to my apartment on the third floor.
When I opened the door I was instantly met with various meows from my adorable Link. I picked him up and made sure that his food and water bowls were filled. I then sent Brian a quick text to let him know that I had indeed made it home safely. The rest of the day was spent mostly browsing the internet to see if I could find any veterinary clinics hiring vet techs. After having searched for the rest of the day, with nothing coming up, I crawled into bed. As I drifted into a sleep, various thoughts of Brian began to plague my mind.
