Chapter Seven: A Month Away

A/N: The cat in the picture is supposed to be Link

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The next morning I woke up with a sigh and crawled out of my warm bed, the morning already seemed to be dragging on. Link was curled up at the foot of my bed, fast asleep still. I started to get ready for the day, doing the normal routine that I do every morning. Though this time, I paused briefly to admire the artwork I had on my thigh, it was a dreamcatcher. I had gotten it for my grandmother and three other family members I was really close to who passed away from cancer. Absentmindedly I ran my fingers over the design, tracing it lightly as I used to do when it was fresh and newly done. Now the color was faded a bit, as all things fade with age. I sighed softly, remembering when I had gotten it done the first time.

The quiet hum of the needle echoed throughout the tiny room. The vibrations of it causing me to drift in and out of sleep, only once or twice it stung but otherwise it put me to sleep. The tattoo artist, Shaun, was entirely focused on what he was doing. He paused a few times before continuing and I had to sit up for a bit, my right leg entirely numb from lying on it for so long. A quiet sigh escaped me as I continued to flip through my phone, reading one of the many stories that I possessed.

After what seemed like hours, he stopped and began to put his stuff away. "You can go take a look at it. It's finished." He said as he began to clean up his work station. I hopped off of the chair. My right leg making it difficult to walk, so I had to sit down for a few minutes. Once I could properly walk again, I went to the mirror and turned to the side. From my knee up to my thigh on my left leg was a beautiful dreamcatcher with a spider web design on the inside of it. A small tugged at the corners of my lips. It wasn't completely finished yet but it looked beautiful already.

"Does it look good?" Shaun, the tattoo artist, asked as he walked up to me.

"It looks great!" I smiled, thrilled with how it turned out. He nodded and then motioned me to follow him up to the front counter. He sat in the chair and typed away at the keyboard before handing the tablet over for me to pay on. To which I paid and left a tip for him as well.

"Alright, let's schedule the next appointment to finish that up and get it colored in." He said, scrolling through the calendar he had on the computer. Once he found a suitable opening that fit both of our agenda's, he scribbled it down on a card and handed it to me.

"I look forward to getting that finished." He said as he passed over the card.

"I'm looking forward to it as well. You have a great night Shaun." I said as I tucked the card away in my purse.

"You too!" He called out as I left the shop. My leg wrapped with plastic wrap. I got into my car and then drove back home to where my cat Link was waiting for me.

I smiled faintly at the memory and then finished getting ready for the day. My phone buzzed on the nightstand, I reached over and grabbed it, seeing that it was just a text from Brian saying that he made it to the airport and was on his way to... Wherever he was going, I couldn't remember at the moment. But another one was from Chris saying that I should call him as soon as I got the text. Curiosity took ahold of me and I called him as I was slipping into my shoes to head to the shelter. The phone ringed twice and on the third ring he picked up.

"Hello?" Chris asked, his voice sounding tired.

"Hey Chris, it's Bonnie. What's up? You sent me a text telling me to call you." I said, getting straight to the point.

"What? I don't get a 'how are you doing?'..." He chuckled quietly. "Well anyway, I saw this morning that a clinic near my office that's looking for a vet tech and I figured I'd let you know." He said simply.

"Really?" I smiled, feeling a bit giddy with excitement.

"Yeah." He replied back, I could practically hear him grinning. "I'll send you the directions in a text, that way you won't forget them. I'd suggest heading over there soon."

"Okay, thank you Chris." I replied. "I'll talk to you later then." I said.

"Yeah, talk to you later." He said then ended the call and I did the same. A few moments later my phone vibrated in my hand, letting me know I had a text. I opened it to find the directions to the clinic Chris had been talking about. I smiled and walked outside, then climbed into my truck and started it up. I had decided to take a little 'detour' before heading to the shelter today.

The clinic wasn't too far from the shelter surprisingly. I double checked the directions again to make sure that I was at the right place. Once I was positive that I was at the right clinic, I got out of my truck and made my way inside. The lady behind the counter peered at me over her glasses.

"May I help you?" She asked in a bored tone, clicking away at some of the keys on her keyboard as she focused her gaze back on the computer screen in front of her.

"Yes actually..." I started, her gaze turning back to me. "I'm here to apply for the vet tech position." I finished. Her gaze returned back to the computer in front of her, a quiet chuckle escaped her.

"Alright." She stated simply before grabbing a pen out of the cup on the desk. She shuffled around and pulled out a piece of paper attached to a clipboard and handed them both over to me. "Just fill out the application."

"Okay." I said as I took the pen and clipboard, I then walked over to a line of chairs that were propped up against the wall and began to fill out the application. It took only a few minutes to complete and once it was complete I handed it back to the lady at the counter.

"Thank you, and have a nice day." She said simply, typing away at the keyboard.

"Thanks, you too." I said out of habit as I walked back outside and climbed into my truck. Starting it up once again and driving to the shelter. I parked my truck in the shelter parking lot and got out, then walked inside. The bell above the door ringing loudly, signaling my arrival. I took off my coat and hung it up on the coat rack before heading into the cat room.

I opened the door and walked inside, seeing that there were two other people in the room as well that I recognized as some of the other volunteers along with the manager of the cat room. I sighed softly before getting to work, beginning to clean pretty much everything and anything in the room.

The hours flew by and soon enough I was on my way home after a day of work. The diner had gone rather smoothly, I had all of my regulars in today and got tipped generously. I pulled up into my parking space at the apartment complex and got out. I trudged up the stairs and then unlocked my door and shuffled inside. Link immediately running up to me and rubbing up against my legs. I smiled and then bent down to pet him, smiling a bit before taking off my coat and hanging it up on the coat rack.

I walked into the kitchen and munched on a few snacks before heading into the living room. I sat on the couch and Link jumped up beside me and began to rub up against me. I smiled and began to run my fingers through his soft fur, Link then crawled onto my lap and curled up there. He purred quietly as he began to fall asleep, I smiled fondly at him, but then my phone went off. I sighed softly and answered it.

"Hello?" I asked, running my fingers through my hair in a tired manor.

"Hey, miss me yet?" I heard his voice come from the other end of the phone, a quiet chuckle followed the question.

"You wish. You're probably the one who's missing me." I smirked, beginning to giggle myself.

He chuckled quietly and I could practically hear him smiling. "You're right, I actually am missing you."

"Aw. How sweet. I'm flattered." I smiled.

"Oh hush up." He retorted before smiling. "How's Scooby?" He asked.

"He's good, I went to check up after I was at the shelter and then once again on the way home. A little confused as to where you are but otherwise he's fine." I answered easily, the orange tabby definitely having a lot of energy when I had first entered.

"Alright. Well I'm sure you're tired and it's getting late there. I'll talk to you tomorrow okay?" He said through the phone softly.

"Alright Brian. Sleep well." I responded back.

"Goodnight Bonnie." He said before hanging up, I then ended the call as well. I smiled and then scooped Link up and carried him into my bedroom and crawled underneath the covers. Falling into a deep sleep very quickly.
