Chapter Four: A Surprise Visit
The low lighting of the room made the atmosphere that much more pleasant. I was currently sitting at the corner table in the very back of the room with a few of my other friends that had come along. Though the others had gone off dancing all except for Janelle, Lily, Chad and I. Janelle, of course, was being very mopey because Chad had come here with his current girlfriend Lily rather than with her. Despite the fact that Chad and Janelle had broken up a very long time ago and it was causing some tension before Janelle finally ran out of the room very dramatically. Chad sighed and threw his hands up in the air.
"I don't know what to do, I'm not going to sit here and tell her I love her like she likes to assume I still do. I'm with Lily now and it's been months since we've broken up, can't she get over it?" Chad looked at Lily and me.
"I don't know Chad. She likes to say that you know she wants to hurt Lily for taking you away from her and she still says that you love her and all of that." I responded back slowly, as if walking on eggshells.
"I can't take this anymore. She continues to do this after I've told her to stop... And now she's doing it on prom night too? When it's supposed to be about having fun and not about her?" He went to get up but Lily tugged him back down instead and began talking to him.
"I know that this was supposed to be yours and her tonight together, so why don't you go get some pictures done with her or dance with her or do something to make her happy? No one should be this upset on their night of prom. I've got at least another year of this while she only has this one. So try and make it enjoyable for her okay?" Lily spoke briefly, smiling the whole time as she spoke.
"Alright, if it'll make you happy... I'll do it." Chad responded back, not being able to say no to her. With that he got up and went off to search for Janelle.
"I really truly believe that no one should be this upset on their night of prom. I want her to be able to enjoy this night." Lily said, turning to me. "I don't believe I got your name though."
"It's Bonnie." I smiled before asking. "Want to dance while Chad is off doing whatever he's doing?"
"Yes!" She smiled excitedly, taking hold of my hand and literally dragging me out onto the dance floor. I had a hard time keeping up mainly because of the heels I was wearing. They were cute on the shoe rack but not very comfortable to walk in.
We had fun on the dancefloor just me and her, when we got tired enough, we took a break and sat back at the table with Chad and Janelle eventually joining us again. Chad sitting directly beside Lily and Janelle sitting in between Chad and I. Janelle seemed less hostile towards Lily and Chad seemed much calmer now. Lily smiled and then looked over at all of us.
"Let's go dance." She said once we had caught our breath, and the three of us were off. Janelle had opted to stay behind but she was eventually dragged out onto the dance floor by Lily and I. After a few more upbeat songs came on, a slow song came on and seeing as I didn't have anyone to dance with, I went to walk off the floor. A moment later a hand grabbed my wrist and gently tugged me against them. Blinking in surprise I looked up only to see Brian with a smile on his face.
"Brian?" I questioned as he began to lead the two of us through the slow song.
"Well I have to say, I'm not very good at this... I hope you don't mind." He smiled, causing me to smile in response.
"I don't mind at all, I'm not very good myself." I responded back, before the smile faded. I had barely talked to him at all this year and he seemed so much more distant whenever I would talk to him which made me worry. "Brian, what's going on? You seem less like yourself these past few months."
He sighed softly. "People, mostly Veronica, she's been running around telling anyone who'll listen that I'm an alcoholic and that I steal from my parents liquor cabinet. I didn't approach well... Because I thought that you would've believed her since you guys were friends and all of that..."
"Brian, I've known you for how many years? I would always go to you first if there was any sort of issue like that. I wouldn't even believe her cause I know you wouldn't do anything like that." I said confidently, my smile instantly returning.
A smile slipped back onto his features and he paused, releasing me as he pulled out his phone. "Hang on, I have something that'll make this better." He said, fumbling around with the phone for a bit before a bunch of little hearts appeared on the LED light strip he had attached to his shirt which caused me to blush as Chad and Lily laughed.
"Look at you smurfette! You're causing his heart to malfunction." Chad teased me, a goofy smile plastered to his face as him and Lily danced. I was soon pulled back into the dance by Brian as Lily giggled. Chad's nickname for me had been smurfette throughout the entire year, the reason behind it? I had absolutely no clue as to why he called me that.
"You two are really cute together." Lily commented, disappearing from view momentarily. "Are you two dating?" She questioned us as she came back into view which caused me to giggle.
"No, we're just friends." I replied easily, having the question asked many times beforehand.
As the song ended our small group made its way back to the table, but we didn't sit down, instead we all hung around the table. I eventually took of the heels which had become really annoying. Chad and Brian were joking around before Chad became serious and dragged Brian off to god knows where. So Lily and I were left to entertain ourselves which we did, getting to know each other better. I realized we had a lot in common and we found ourselves in deep conversation until Chad came back with Brian.
"So do you think you'd want to date her?" He asked Brian, motioning to me.
"Maybe if she'd be this tall." Brian teased, moving his hand so that it represented the height he wanted. Which wasn't too much terribly taller.
"Well I could be. With heels on." I shot back at him with a smile before wandering off, a worried look came onto his features and he tugged me into a hug.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean it." He responded quickly.
"Don't apologize." I giggled, slipping my heels back on and then twirling. "See? Now I'm taller." I added on which caused him to chuckle.
"Of course." He chuckled before Chad came over and dragged us away to where he had dragged Brian previously.
"Now I dragged you both here because you two seem to have amazing chemistry and I'm no expert in love, but you two seem to really click. Now... Brian, you said to me earlier that you did think that she was cute and I want to know if you feel the same Bonnie." Chad stated simply while looking over at me.
"I will admit that he is attractive..." I said before Chad cut back in.
"See, now what would you two think about getting together?" Chad asked once again, mainly focusing on Brian now.
"I'm going to be going to college and..." Chad cut him off before he could finish.
"Yeah, but aren't you going to college too Bonnie?" Chad asked, prodding for an answer.
"Yes." I answered back simply, feeling uncomfortable with the situation at hand.
"There you go. So what do you guys think?" Chad asked, trying desperately to get us together.
"I'm not sure..." Brian said and then looked over at me.
"I'm not sure either. I think it may be best to wait right now and whatever happens in the future, happens." I answered Chad. A look of disappointment coming onto his features.
"Alright, well I tried my best." He said before smiling once again and heading over to Lily as Brian and I were left there, we looked at each other before re-joining our group.
An hour later prom ended and it was pouring out. I said goodbye to Chad, Lily and Janelle. Knowing that it'd probably be the last time that I'd see them again. Brian walked with me until he spotted his car. He hugged me briefly before scurrying off to his car. I found mine and then climbed in, my parents driving me home since I was in no condition to drive with heels on.
"Bonnie? Bonnie!" A distant voice called to me, sounding much more irritated by the second. I blinked and looked over at Jess, one of my best friends, I had heard a group of teenagers talking about their dresses for prom and all of that which had sucked me into the memory in the first place.
"Sorry Jess. What was that again?" I asked, apologizing sincerely. She softened up a bit and even gave me a small smile.
"There's two men at table three that's requesting you as their waitress, both of them are quite dashing I must say." She said with a wink, before rushing off to seat another group that had just come in.
I sighed softly and then smiled before making my way over to table three. Giving my usual greeting of 'Hello and welcome to Milli's Diner, I'm Bonnie and I'll be your waitress today.' while taking out my notepad to write everything down.
"Well that's certainly one way to greet me." Brian grinned up at me devilishly, sitting across from him was what I assumed was a friend.
"Well I certainly didn't expect to see you here." I didn't bother to hide the fact that I was shocked. "Who's this with you?" I asked.
"I'm hurt that you don't remember me." The man across from Brian said, feigning hurt.
"Chris...?" I said hesitantly before a huge grin spread onto his features.
"You do remember!" He exclaimed happily. His afro was gone and instead was replaced with short tidy hair and he had definitely gotten tan.
"I thought honestly I'd never see you again." I stated simply.
"Well life has a funny way of remembering details. I bumped into Brian today during our lunch breaks and we decided to come here and annoy you instead." Chris responded back.
"Oh joy." I muttered, smiling all the meanwhile. "So what will it be?"
Brian and Chris placed their orders and I got them filled rather quickly. After I dropped off their drinks and placed their food orders in, I stopped by a few of the tables I waited to make sure everything was okay then headed back to Brian and Chris's table.
"Hey Bonnie, Chris and I were wondering if you were up for some fun tonight?" Brian asked as Chris snickered from across the table.
"Yeah, all sorts of fun..." He said in a sing-song kind of way that made me laugh.
"Shut up Chris, that's not what I meant." Brian huffed, a blush coming onto his features as he spoke.
"Well what kind of fun did you have in mind?" I asked as I tried to stifle a giggle that threatened to let loose any moment.
"Laser tag!" Both of them said cheerfully, boyish grins sweeping over their features as they looked up at me excitedly.
I sighed and chuckled quietly, with a playful roll of my eyes I gave my answer. "Sure, why not?"
