Chapter Five: Late Night Confessions

Laughter rang throughout the small vehicle we were all piled into. Chris being the driver this time while I sat in the passenger side and Brian sat in the back on the middle seat. We were all laughing because Chris had gotten a bug stuck in his afro and had pulled over onto the side of the road to get it out since neither me or Brian were willing to pull it out of his hair. Since it was Chris's turn to pick the trip that we went on, he decided to take us to one of his favorite libraries since he hadn't been there in awhile and it had gotten remodeled. A few more minutes of driving passed by before I could finally see the building in the distance.

It was a beautiful structure. With stone walls that made it look like a small castle hidden away since it was surrounded by trees. Chris pulled up into the driveway and parked the car, the parking lot being surprisingly full for a library. Believing that there must be more to the eye, I hopped out and began to walk towards the doors with Chris and Brian tagging along behind me.

"So what exactly are we here for Chris?" I asked as I pushed the door open and held it there so that the other two could walk in.

"Well it got redesigned on the inside and I'd love to check it out. Since it was my turn I thought it'd be a great idea, better than the last idea you had Bonnie where you nearly killed us with all that hiking around those waterfalls." Chris teased as he walked by.

"It wasn't so bad. You guys just need to get into shape." I shot back, following in after him and the door closing behind me.

"Oh no, it was pretty bad for us. You chose the most difficult trail." Brian said, trying to help Chris out.

"Yeah, yeah. I still think you guys are wimps for not being able to handle a little bit of hiking." I teased with a smile spreading across my features.

"Yeah well..." Chris was about to finish but then got one look around and took off towards one of the many sections of books. His footsteps quickly fading away as Brian and I were left to fend for ourselves.

"Well... I guess let's go explore." I suggested. Brian merely shrugged in response.

"I don't know about you, but I'm going to head over to the science section." Brian said while wandering off in that direction after he had looked at a map of the library.

With a quiet sigh I quickly looked for the romance section, seeing that it wasn't too far from the science section they had. I wandered off, finding it fairly easily and then plucking the book that had caught my attention the most off of the shelf before going off to find Brian.

I found him propped up on one of the tables, his eyes roaming over the pages of the book he had open in front of him. He quietly read aloud as he read over them, I smiled to myself and walked over to him. I took the seat across from him and he looked up at me, startled as I had pulled him out of whatever trance he had been in. He caught sight of my book and smirked.

"A romance novel? Really?" He questioned in a teasing tone, a hint of amusement sparkling in his blue eyes.

I rolled my eyes playfully and smiled faintly. "Yes really. Romance can be really good." I said thoughtfully, opening the book and scanning through the prologue.

"How so?" He asked then added. "I've never liked romance mainly because it seems like it's so..." He trailed off as if looking for the right word.

"Sappy?" I asked with an all knowing smile. He nodded in response to the question.

"Yeah!" He chimed, before asking. "So why do you like it so much?"

"Well..." I started, thinking about how I wanted to word my answer before continuing. "I like romance because there are many different variations of it. My favorite types of romance are the ones where there isn't always necessarily a happy ending. If that makes any sense." I answered truthfully.

"Sort of..." Brian said, looking like he was processing everything that I said.

"Bonnie!" Chris shouted from the front, a huge smile spreading across his face. "We're here!" He said as he parked the car and then immediately jumping out of it.

Brian and I took a bit getting out of the car before catching up with Chris who was waiting for us eagerly at the door. He opened it and held it open for us.

"Ladies first." Brian smirked as he motioned for me to walk ahead of him.

"You... Are going down mister." I said as I walked inside the building, taking a look around to see there was a small arcade in the very back with a prize stand. Chris followed us and then lead us up to the counter.

"Three please." He said while paying the guy working behind the counter despite Brian and I's various shouts of protest. "Oh hush up you two. It's my treat tonight." Chris said while following the guy who was working there. All three of us were lead into a room and then the guy went over the rules briefly before setting us up with the laser tag equipment.

After about an hour or two of playing laser tag, the game ended. With me beating both Chris and Brian despite never having played laser tag before. We all piled back into the car afterwards and Chris began to drive us back to our houses since he had picked us up earlier.

"So... There's something I need to tell you guys..." Brian started, fiddling nervously with the button on his sleeve.

"Yes?" Chris and I both spoke at the same time with curiosity.

"Well... I..." Brian cleared his throat before continuing. "I got an offering to travel to a different state and teach students how to build modules and things of that nature."

Chris and I must've showed how shocked we actually were because he then quickly added that he would only be gone for about a month.

"What state are you going to? And when are you leaving?" I asked rapidly, a small bit of fear growing inside of me.

"I'm going to be going to Chicago, Illinois and I'll be leaving the day after tomorrow." He answered calmly despite the small amount of tension that was growing within the vehicle.

"Why didn't you tell me sooner?" Chris asked sharply, venom lacing each word.

"Because I knew that you needed to focus more on the novel that you're trying to finish." Brian replied quietly, fidgeting in his seat a bit. "I didn't tell you Bonnie because I wasn't sure if we would've continued talking after the animal shelter."

"I suppose that's a good reason..." I said softly, not really sure what to think at the moment. But before Brian could say anything else, Chris pulled sharply into Brian's driveway.

"Here." Chris said, eerily calm as Brian slipped out of the car. We watched him trudge up through the snow to his house. He opened the door and walked inside and then Chris was off again.

"I don't get him. He has the worst timing possible with telling me things." His frustration clear in the way he was driving at the moment which had me clinging to the seat.

"I don't understand it either, but that's the way Brian has always been. Remember when he went to England for a week and didn't tell us until after he had left?" I said, hoping that it would make him relax a bit.

"Yeah I remember that day, you were probably the most frustrated between the two of us, I guess we switched roles this time huh?" He chuckled, his driving improving a little bit. He opened his mouth to say something else but decided against it and instead focused on the road.

"What is it?" I asked, knowing that look.

"What?" Chris asked, glancing in the mirror at me.

"I know that look. What did you want to say?" I said, a small smile appearing on my features as I waited for his answer.

"Nothing, just remembering what Brian was telling me awhile ago." Chris said, pulling into my driveway.

"Which was...?" I prodded, trying to get an answer from him.

"Nothing of importance... But Bonnie?" He said softly, turning around to look at me.

    "Yes?" I asked in reply.

"Just be careful okay?" He said softly. "You're like a little sister to me. Credit I don't talk to you as much as I used to but here." He added on while handing me a slip of paper and after glancing at it. I realized it had his number on it.

"Oh, I don't have a pen or paper with me..." I said, he smiled and handed me his phone with the screen already open to a new contact.

"It's okay, just put your contact stuff in there." He said, I immediately filled it out and saved it before handing it back to him.

"There." I said before hopping out. "Thanks Chris and goodnight." I then turned and began my walk up to my apartment.

"Goodnight Bonnie!" Chris called as he pulled away from the driveway and drove back to wherever he lived.

Various questions plagued my mind as I walked up the staircase that lead to my small apartment. I fumbled around for my keys, distracted by my thoughts, before finally finding them and unlocking the front door. A meow came from Link as he ran up to me and rubbed against my legs beginning to purr despite my absence most of the day.

"I know, I know, momma hasn't been home enough lately to spend time with you." I cooed as I scooped him up into my arms and snuggled him. He continued to purr and closed his eyes in bliss as I scratched under his chin. I kicked off my shoes and then walked into my bedroom seeing as it was late. I set Link down on my very soft comforter that had a floral design on it then changed into pajamas for the night.

I sat on the edge of my bed and stretched before curling up after having plugged my phone into charge over night. I curled up underneath the comforter with Link snuggling up against me. A loud buzz grabbed my attention. I groaned quietly and reached over onto my nightstand and took hold of my phone. The brightness of the screen caused me to squint as I saw that a new text message had appeared.

    'Hey, you free tomorrow? -B'

I thought for a moment before responding back. 'Free in the morning up until about 11 am. Why?' I pressed send and within seconds my phone buzzed again.

'Wanted to chat with you. Is your place okay? -B'

'Of course.' I responded back, then sent another text message that had the details of my whereabouts. It only took a few seconds before I felt my phone go off again.

'Alright. Goodnight Bonnie, sleep well. -B'

I smiled and then set my phone off to the side on my nightstand before thoughts once again invaded my mind about what he could possibly want to talk about. I tossed and turned for about a good hour, which earned me multiple glares from Link as I continued to re-adjust myself. Finally I fell into what could only be described as a restless sleep.
