002. The Misunderstanding of Pride

One common thing I hear from outsiders of the LGBT community (and then rarely people with in it) is that pride is to much. I hear things like,

"Well at least we aren't parading down the streets."

"You don't need to be so loud about it."

But I fear they misunderstood the point. This global event doesn't come from a want to be "different" and say "oh look I'm so special". I sadly know there is a group of us that use it as a way to do that but the majority don't.

So I just want to clarify the point of pride. It's to be proud. No not of our sexuality because you guys are right it's not something we should be prideful for. But what we should be proud of is how progress was made, how people sacraficing them selves over the last century just so we could get to this point.

I wonder, do you any of them even know the origins of pride?

In June 1969 New York police arrive at a gay bar and attempted to arrest everyone there. Fed up with their treat meant they didn't go easily.  This was the Stonewall Riot. And it's just one of the things we try and to remember when we celebrate. Because this isnt some self conceited event, it's a reflective time to realize we have a come a long way, that we can parade down a street and not be arrested is a feat of human empathy and caring for eachother.

And that is truly a special thing.

And we still have a long way to go.

(Ps. Way to go India!!!!!!!!!!!)

(Ps. During pride there will be kids, please realize this and keep it PG because I do realize that is a problem of pride.)
