Chapter 12:First Annual Demigod Games

Piper's POV

I force down another sip of water, knowing that it will be my last for a while. I try to eat an apple, but it goes down without a taste.

Jitters are in my stomach as I set down my now empty glass. There isn't a word for how it feels to know you're minutes away from fighting to the death. Killing strangers.

I try to shake the image of holding a bloody weapon over a still body. But it keeps coming back.

Ten minutes left here. Ten minutes.

A man dressed in all white with a helmet walks into my room without knocking. Not that it matters.

I go with him to the area where we will enter the arena. I'm surprised that we go underground and not on a road.

We walk down white stairs with white walls. I see nor hear anyone else.

The man finally stops in an open room with a tube the size of a human. I'm meant to go in it.

I fight down nausea as an animated voice announces one minute left. My mouth is already dry and I regret not drinking more water. I wipe my sweaty hands on my pants.

"30 seconds. 29. 28. 27..."

The voice continues to count. I enter the tube when it announces 7.

"6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1."

I feel the tube lurching upward. I balance on my feet and look upward.

The light blinds me. The sun is brighter than the lights in the room. It takes a moment for my eyes to adjust, but they finally do.

I take in the arena. A large metal contraption sits in the middle of all the tributes. The cornucopia. There are a few tall trees peaking up over the walls and a snowy mountain.

It's a maze. The arena is a maze.

"Welcome to the first annual demigod games. May the gods be ever in your favor."

A large screen counts down.

5. 4. 3.

I take a running stance.

2. 1.

We all sprint towards the large cornucopia in the middle. A girl with black hair reaches the back-pack I was heading towards. She grabs it and turns around, right into me. I yank it out of her grasp and run towards an exit.

Another girl with curly blonde hair is behind me, back-pack on her shoulders and a knife in her hands. I maneuver around her, but she still chases me.

I pound through the forest with her on my back.

"Wa-wait!" She shouts.

I ignore her and I keep running.

"Stop, Piper."

That gets my attention. I halt and look back towards her.

Something about the way she holds herself is familiar to me. And her gray eyes.

"Stop," she repeats.

"I am stopped. How did you know-"

"I don't know. It just came to me. Think about something that looks familiar about me."

Her eyes. Gray and calculating. Now they were concentrated on me. Annabeth's eyes always got like that when-

Annabeth. That is her name.

"Annabeth?"

Her eyes shine with victory.

"See? Somehow you know me and I know you. I don't know why or how. I knew someone else earlier today-"

A cannon booms in the distance. I remember where I am, where we are. I immediately scan my surroundings and see no one.

"We need to first find water, that's most important. We will die first of dehydration before starvation. Let's go."

I'm surprised at how fast I consider her an ally, a friend. But somehow, I know her, I know Annabeth. I know that she always relies on a plan and quick thinking. And Percy, always Percy.

A sharp pang burns behind my eyes. How do I know all of these things all of a sudden?

Before I can reach a conclusion, Annabeth walks in front of me and I follow.
