Chapter 1

"I'm gonna get you, Kiersten!" I heard his fast footsteps behind me. My legs shook and I ran as fast as I could. My heart palpitated in my chest. My body was fueled by adrenaline, allowing me to persevere through the pain of my aching lungs and legs.

"Gotcha!" His deep voice and hand on my shoulder sent a chill down my spine. "You're it!" His tracks followed off in the opposite direction. "Tag no tag backs!"

I pouted and rolled my eyes. "You're too fast, Quill!" My little legs chased after him for a few minutes before I heard my mom come outside.

"Come inside boys, dinners ready!" She held the door open for us to come inside.

"Last one there is a rotten egg!" I skid across the yard while my aching legs dragged me to the door. I tapped him on the shoulder. "I win." I stuck my tongue out at him and ran inside to go wash my hands.

Quill blew a fuse at my tongue, as if my gesture was a trigger deep inside him. "That was uncalled for!" His voice echoed across the house, his deep voice booming loudly. "Im gonna get you, Kiersten! For a second time!"

"It's okay, baby, just let him win this time." She kissed his forehead. "You'll get him next time." Mom's smile always lit the whole room, and made us feel safe. Her soft giggle filled the room and she gave him a little shove. "Now go and get washed up. You two can play tomorrow morning."

He did as he was told and scurried up to the bathroom. A dark gaze laid on me as he washed his hands. "Just because you beat me to the door doesn't mean you're better than me, Kiersten."

"Whatever." A frown made its way onto my face as I dried my hands. "You're just mad because you can't handle the fact that you lost fair and square for once. Just let me have this you big baby."

Quill stood their washing his hands. "This is stupid." He huffed and walked over to dry his hands. "This is a stupid fight."

I subconsciously nodded and agreed with him. "You started it." My mouth mumbled the words against my better judgment and I prayed that he didn't hear them. Those prayers were answered because he either didn't hear me, or he decided to ignore me.

"Lets just go eat, and then go to sleep."

Finally, something we could both agree on.

We walked down the hallway to the kitchen in complete silence. The petty hatred over calling each other a rotten egg would only last through dinner, until mom fixed the whole situation. Or so I thought.

Quill documented everything in his brain at all times. He always had thoughts behind his dark eyes but I could never figure them out. He was quiet a lot of the time, except around me and mom. He doesn't have much of a good life though, except when it comes to our sake.

Quill was over at our house almost every night. He was practically my brother. My mom treated him like she did with me. She would show him the same affection she did with me, she'd punish him when he did something wrong just like me, he stays for dinner and she feeds him. We even have a conjoined room since he sleeps over so much. Sometimes he goes over to his actual house though. Everytime he would come back over he would have a cut or a bruise somewhere. Mom always took care of him. He really was my brother from another mother.
