A/N: What if Varian and Y/n both never escaped the castle that night?

Varian and Y/n waltzed in the ballroom, it felt like it was only them in the world.

" Oh, my starlight. I wish that my 18th birthday would come sooner." He softly said as he held your cheek. You smiled.

" Varian, it's only a few months away. I think we'll manage." You both chuckled. Your crowns f/c jewels shimmered as you both danced.

" I'm curious, what do you want to do after we're married?" The royal engineer said as he dipped you. As he brought you back up you spoke.

" I want you and me to have a cottage together. Rapunzel is going to be queen, there's no reason for me to stay here. And we'll have a beautiful stargazing room made of glass. Where we can watch the sky and count the stars." Varian spun you.

" We'll have picnics by the stream near our cottage. And go for walks. I'll write my poems while you sketch your inventions. And I'll help you build them. And help you with your experiments." You finished as Varian listened. He grinned as your foreheads touched lovingly.

" That sounds like a plan, starlight." He whispered. You both gazed into eachothers eyes.

The doors to the throne room banged open violently.

Everyone in their ball gowns and suits all watched as a single figure walked in. Varian narrowed his eyes before widening them in horror.

Andrew.

" Oh, no...this isn't the kitchen, is it?" He sarcastically said as he held his chin.

" Where are the guards?" The king demanded. Andrew smirked.

" Sorry your majesty, but they got in the way." Your eyes widened.

" I'm here to address all subjects... that this kingdom is no longer yours." Andrew announced.

" We beat you once, we shall again!" The king roared.

" Oh.. I'm not alone. This time, I have reinforcements. Time for this kingdom to meet its demise."

He snapped his fingers, the sound echoing throughout the dead silent room.

BOOM!

Everything happened in slow motion for you. An army rushed into the ball room, gunfire shattered the windows. The guests screamed and ran, Rapunzel ran to Eugene. Varian grabbed your hand and you both raced out of the throne room and down the hall. Bombs were being thrown at couples who desperately tried to escape. Their screams echoed as some huddled in fear, accepting their fate. And others cried out in terror, panicking.

Hopes and dreams, all being ripped away. The decorations were all being ruined, shot up. As you ran, You slowly turned your head, seeing Rapunzel and Eugene being cornered. Your eyes welled up at the sight.

..

You turned your head away right as you heard gunfire.

Suddenly time went back to normal. 

Varian hit his shoulder on the wall from the momentum, You both ran as fast as you could down the halls. Taking twists and turns, it felt like it never ended. Rumbles shook the castle as you both tried to maintain your balance. Another bomb was thrown through a window behind you. You both sprinted away before it blew up. You and Varian's hair were blown by the speed of your running.

You both panted as you ran. Both hand in hand, you tried to reach the main doors. But they were floors down. Varian had tears in his eyes as he dragged you down more halls.

Gunfire ran through the hall. More guests were shot. Tears streamed down your face as you gathered your ball gown to be able to run faster.

BAM!

Rumble...

BAM!

Gunfire, bombs...everywhere it was all too much. Too much death.

You and Varian suddenly stopped dead in your tracks.

An enemy soldier.

Varian knew what was coming and quickly hugged you tightly, his back to the soldier behind him.

" I love you." He whispered as he shut his eyes tightly.

" I love you." You whispered back as you clutched him.

You heard two shots, and everything went black.

Your eyes flickered open. It was night. The halls were dark as moonlight shined through the broken windows.

You slowly sat up. Dusting off your ball gown. You looked around for the alchemist.

" Varian?"

Where did he go? Why did he leave you?

" Starlight."

You turned around and smiled. There he stood, in his suit and goggles, perfect as ever. He smiled softly at you.

" May I have this dance?" He asked. You curtsied.

" You may. Until the stars fall, my love. We will dance." You declared. Varian nodded.

" Until the stars fall." Varian agreed.

...

You both knew you were dead. Ghosts, actually. For eternity you and Varian would waltz into the night of the ruined kingdom. As the seasons changed from fall, to a snowy winter, you still danced. In your hearts, the kingdom was always alive.
