Chapter 34
"Again!" Levi barked and aimed a punch at my guts. Using my reflexes, I side-stepped, dodging the blow.
Levi grunted and slung his other arm forward, this time going for my face.
I wasn't able to dodge this one so instead of getting out of harm's way, I grabbed his hand right before it knocked my head clean off my shoulders.
Levi smirked, something I didn't expect him to do. Before I could react to his reaction, his foot connected with my legs, causing me to crumble and fall to my knees.
"Ow..." I groaned, hot tears filling my eyes from the sudden pain.
"Humph," Levi snorted. "You're too weak. If you can't even see that coming, how will you expect yourself to defeat Titans never mind save your own ass?"
I glared at him through my watery eyes.
"Shuddap," I grumbled, earning a kick to my stomach.
Levi sighed and held out his hand.
"Come on," he said, bored. "We need to keep training to get you stronger."
I reluctantly grabbed his hand and he hoisted me up. We stared at each other for a moment, but a shrilling voice filled with happiness interrupted us.
"SQUEE!" my mom squealed. "I can't believe I'm still fangirling at my age! I'm seeing Levi act nice to his daughter right before my eyes! Unvelievable!"
Erwin walked up next to her and grinned in our direction.
"Hello, Levi. Karen," he greeted. "Training I presume?"
"Yes sir," I replied. My mom continued to fangirl as if there won't be a tomorrow. Levi glared at her, but his eyes showed a tiny bit of happiness.
Erwin smiled and said,"Well, you two have been training for the last 2 hours. Why don't you both take a break? You may continue afterwards."
Levi rolled his eyes. "What ever," he grumbled. "Karen, you are dismissed."
"Thank you," I said. "Good bye... Corporal."
I turned around and walked away, but not before I saw Levi's eyes widen a bit and his face flushed a light pink.
I turned a corner and was about to open a door when a bolt of lightning struck the sky. I portal much like the one I fell out of opened in the sky and someone or something was tossed out of it. Even from where I was standing, I couldn tell it was a woman by the way she screamed.
After a few moments, the portal closed up and everything turned silent again as if that didn't just happen. I stood rigid in my spot until Noah rushed over.
"Karen!" he yelled. "What just happened?! I heard a scream and thought it was you! Are you okay?!"
"I'm fine," I assured him. "That scream wasn't me though. It was someone else's. A woman's."
To prove my point, a woman's voice broke through the air,"OW!"
Noah froze next to me, his eyes sudden turning into shock.
"Mother...?" he whispered quietly.
"Huh?" I asked, confused. Why am I always the one confused here?
Noah took a step towards the sound. And then another. And then another until he was running towards the place where the woman fell to.
"Wait!" I cried and ran after him.
We turned the corner and ran onto the training grounds where Erwin, Levi, and my mom standing together while staring at a blonde hair woman who was sitting on the ground with a hand on her head.
We walked over to the crowd. I took a good look at the woman.
She had shiney blonde hair that was tied in two loose braids that cascaded down her chest. Her eyes were a shocking blue... a color that remainded me of someone. Noah.
My mom was staring at the woman wide eyed. Her lips quivering, she gasped,"K-Katrina?!"
The woman, Katrina, stopped groaning for a second to look up at my mom. Her eyes widened just like my mom's did.
"Caitlyn?!" Katrina nearly screamed. She looked around herself wildly, her eyes darting from my mom to Erwin to Levi. Her eyes just seem to widen even more.
"ERWIN?!" she yelled and pointed at Erwin as if accusing him of something. Then she pointed at Levi. "AND LEVI?! What in the-"
"Mom...?" a hopeful voice said from beside me. Katrina paused mid-sentence. She slowly turned to face Noah.
"Noah...?" she whispered. "Is that... you...?"
Noah broke into a smile and flung himself onto Katrina.
"Mom!" he cried. "I missed you so much!"
Forgetting about the rest of us, Katrina cried happily and hugged her son tightly.
"9 years!" she exclaimed. "It's been 9 years since I've last saw you Noah! You've grown so much since the last time I saw you when you were just a 6 year old little boy!"
Noah pulled back and laughed.
"Duh, Mom," he smiled. "I'm fifteen."
Katrina giggled.
"Yes, yes," she agreed. "Silly me... but, if you're fifteen, have you grown out of your favorite show when you were little? What was the name of it again? My Little Pony?"
Noah's face turned beet red.
"Mom," he complained. Katrina laughed again.
"Just kidding!" she assured her son. Erwin cleared his throat.
"Katrina," he said slowly. "What are you doing here?"
As if just remembering where she was, Katrina's face slowly fell. She turned to face Erwin.
"Um... I don't know," she stammered. "I just... fell out of a portal... I swear..."
But Erwin wasn't having it. His eyes blazed up in flames.
"How many times do I have to remind you to stay in the real world?!" he roared. "It's dangerous here! Do you want to put Noah in more danger than what he already is in?!"
Katrina flinched. Before Erwin could go on, my mom jumped in.
"That's enough, Erwin," my mom ssaid sternly will putting a hand on Erwin's chest.
Erwin began to protest, but my mom gave him that look that said 'Stop it right now'. Erwin closed his mouth, but he was still fuming.
Katrina looked down in shame.
"I'm sorry," she said softly.
"Humph, you better be," Erwin said bitterly. I've never heard him like this. Something was wrong. This isn't that Erwin that I knew.
Levi cleared his throat before things could get more awkward.
"Are you Katrina Smith, wife of Erwin Smith and Mother to Noah Smith?" he asked.
"Y-Yes..." Katrina answered nervously, her eyes on Erwin who was shorting off dark waves.
Yup, something was definitely up. I may be clueless when it comes to relationships, but from what I can tell right now, Erwin doesn't really like his wife.
My mind drifted back to the conversation he and my mom had when I first came here. I remembered how whenever he either sees me or my mom in the halls, he'll always smile warmly at us. Erwin is still after my mom. He hasn't given her up yet. Katrina is just a replacement. She means nothing to him.
I gritted my teeth, but didn't say anything. What can I do? Just jump out there and demand for Erwin to forget about my mom and love his wife? Yeah right. Not going to work.
"Let's go back inside to talk about this," my mom suggested. "We'll catch too many suspicious attention here."
Levi nodded his head, agreeing with my mom.
"Caitlyn is right," he said, part of his hair covering his eyes. Must he be so dramatic every time? "Let's go inside the HQ."
Noah stood up and helped his mom up too.
Katrina dusted off her jeans as looked up at us.
Erwin sighed in defeat and stared Katrina down.
"You better explain everything to us," he growled, turned, and walked away, a little but of dust flying from where he stepped.
