22 - I Felt
-Saturday-
Yamato left us in front of the hotel where the event was to be held. I thanked him and he waved at us from a distance, until he blended in with the rest of the crowd.
"Let's go inside shall we?" I look over to Harue, whom was holding my hand.
"Okay!" He nods enthusiastically. He so adorable.
We walk inside the hotel, it was kind of crowded and it looked really fancy. Outside of one of the halls stood a sign that said, 'Utsunomiya Exhibition.' beside it stood a man behind a podium.
I go up to him and hand him the tickets. I look beside the podium and there stood a tall flower arrangement in a long vase. I looked really chic but at the same time, it gave off a welcoming vibe.
The man smiles and gives us two badges. "Please enjoy."
"Thank you." I bow a bit. We walk down the wide hallway which displayed a few works. The plate that proudly stood beside the pretty pieces displayed the name and title. We looked at all of them, taking our time to decipher each and every one.
Harue looked entranced by the art before him. He was amazed at the meaning and emotion that they conveyed.
The hallway walls were pure white, which made the colors stand out. The fragrance of flowers lingered in the air, like a gentle perfume that adorned the occasion.
I could actually get into this...now that I know why Hanae enjoyed this so much...
Best of all, Harue was actually enjoying it. I mean, you wouldn't expect kids to like this kind of thing. They would usually find it boring and dull.
It occurred to me that Hanae must've taught him to appreciate art.
I pat Harue's head at the thought and smile to myself. He looks up in confusion,
"What is it Haruna-oba?" He asks me.
"Nothing..." I pause. "Are you having fun?"
"Yeah!." He grins. "I like looking at all of these! They look like the ones in my book!"
We walk a bit further and then come across a large sign above us that had HARUKA UTSUNOMIYA in bold kanji.
"Oba! Oba! That name is in my book!"
I nod. "That's the man that made all the pretty arrangements in your book."
I look forward and the pieces whom were supposed to be by Haruka Utsunomiya.
They were certainly gorgeous. They stood out from the rest greatly, yet...
Why do they feel so, different?
Different from the ones that were in his album, I mean. The ones in his book were pale, delicate and serine. These looked a bit flashy; bold even. Not that it was a bad thing, they were certainly the most beautiful out of the rest.
Beside one of the arrangements is a board that had posted the show times and other activities that Haruka Utsunomiya would take part in. I glanced over at it with the intention of looking away, but something caught my eye.
'Utsunomiya Style Class Demo'
"Harue? I say his name in a questioning tone. "Do you want to try learning some ikebana from Mr. Utsunomiya?"
"Waaah! Can I?" He looks at me. "Y-Yes! I want to!
"Let's go then. It should be beginning right now..." I look over at the workshop area and it was already beginning to get crowded.
I take Harue's hands and rush over to table. There was only one seat left.
"Harue. You can take it." I push him a little towards the chair.
"T-Thanks." He says nervously. I think he was really excited.
"Alright everybody! Mr.Utsunomiya will come out momentarily! We will now pass around tools for you distribute among yourselves..." One of the staff members announces. Everyone at the table starts passing around tools. I hover over Harue watching over him.
Suddenly I hear people start applauding. I look up from Harue to a very handsome looking man whom wore a kimono. He had wavy hair and gentle looking eyes. He had a beauty mark under his left eye. Overall, he looked almost a bit feminine. But, this feminine wasn't the girly kind of feminine.... it was more charming and elegant.
I looks at the temporary students and smiles. "Good afternoon everyone. I want to thank you all for taking the time to come and tour around our exhibit..."
Even his voice was gentle, it was somewhat soothing.
"...Lets begin with theme. What would you like to create? How are you feeling right now?" He asks everybody.
We all think to ourselves.
I look over to Harue and ask him.
"Well...I'm happy." He smiles.
"Ok. So then do you know what you're going to be making?"
"Kind of, yeah."
"Does everyone have a theme to work with?" Mr.Utsunomiya asks. "We'll get started....You start by cutting the stems from here..."
He teaches us to how to cut and bend branches and stems. Many flowers were sprawled out on the table for everyone to use. I watch Harue intently. He looked so focused...
"Miss?" I hear a voice behind me. I turn around. It was Haruka Utsunomiya. "Yes?" I answer before I realize who it is.
He stood holding out a folding chair for me. His eyes widen for a moment before he composes himself and speaks. "You should take a seat..."
"Ah.. Thank you." I smile and take the chair from him.
"You-"
"Haruka! Can you come over here for a sec?" Another man in kimono called out to him.
"Sure." He glances over at me and smiles. I bow a bit before he turns to leave.
His aura is something else...
-----------------------------------------------
The class ends and Harue's arrangement was so nice, that the staff told me about enrolling him into the Utsunomiya Style school. I told them that it wouldn't be a bad Idea, considering the fact that he did have to take an extracurricular activity for school.
They give me some applications and a brochure.
After that we just walk around the exhibit a bit more we stop at an arrangement titled 'I Felt'. It had wild colors and was very bright. From cold colors to warm, light to dark, at first I didn't know how to interpret it.
"Oba? What message does this one have?"
"I don't kno-" I think for a moment and stare at the vase again. "Maybe..."
"It might mean...emotions?" I pause. "The reason for it, eccentric curves and shapes, colors..."
"Human emotions are unexpected. Sometimes they can get a bit ugly, but they're still beautiful because they change so often and never stay the same."
The arrangement had a title but had no name. No author,as if a story whose writer remained anonymous.
----------------------------------
We step out later that afternoon. The sun was going down and the sky was dyed a yellow orange color.
Yamato agreed to pick us up in a near by park since he was finishing whatever he had to around this time.
Harue and I sat on a bench talking about the Exhibit. From the corner of my eye I thought I saw Yamato so I stand.
I turn over to the direction of the familiar figure. It wasn't Yamato.
It was Haruka Utsunomiya.
At that same moment a slightly strong gust of spring breeze shakes the cherry blossom trees around us. Many flowers and petals rain down slowly, being held up by the wind.
"Mr. Utsunomiya..." I bow a bit.
"Hello." He greets nicely. He was no longer wearing a kimono. Now he was just in casual clothes.
I was expecting him to just keep walking by but he just stood still, staring at me. As if he wanted to say something. I stare back, trying to figure him out, but I couldn't, because his expression was gentle, yet his eyes were a mixture of confusion with longing.
What?
"I heard you talk about the arrangement 'I Felt'. You were one of the first people to decipher it..." He speaks quietly. "May...I have your name?"
"I- um...My name is Natsume. Haruna, Natsume."
"Spring flower?" He questions. "Is that how it's written?"
"Yes." I nod a bit. "About the arrangement-"
"Oba....Yamato is over there..." Haru points at Yamato who looks like he was searching for us.
"Ah..ok..." I look over to Harue and nod.
I turn back to Utsunomiya and bow. "I enjoyed your exhibit very much. I have to go now... so if you'll please excuse us-" I turn towards yamato and grab onto Harue's hand. Leaving Mr. Utsunomiya behind.
