Chapter 3

After a long journey home, with her new and unwanted friend in her mind, Serene made it home at last. When she arrived home, she found her family and Tricky going over places she possibly could have been taken.

"What if she's not even in our dimension any more, Council? What if she figured out what her portals can really  do?" Solstris questioned the scientist with a worried expression upon her face.

The man with dragon wings paced back and forth before answering the woman. "No, she couldn't have figured out what her powers can truly do at this young of an age. Keys don't fully master their powers until they are at least sixteen years of age."

Andrew and Tricky watched the two adults question what could've happened to Serene. Andrew, on one hand, was worried sick about his little sister. He feared someone would use her for some great and evil deed. She was too young to be pulled into a war. Especially one involving the keys. Tricky, on the other hand, was going over all of the information that Council and Solstris had unknowingly been giving to the young boy. He had plans for the future, plans of his own. But that is a different story.

Serene peeked around the corner to look into the room where everyone was. The key gulped nervously.

What if she lost control?

What if Flame did something terrible to her family?

What if everyone would hate her?

She was about to turn around and run to her room when she heard Tricky's voice. "Serene? Is that you?" he asked.

Her parents and her brother looked over in her direction as Tricky stood up and walked over to her. He instantly pulled her into a hug and didn't let go of the key. "Where were you? You had us all worried sick!"

"I-I'm sorry. I got lost and couldn't find my way back to the mansion." The key lied.

"From now on please do not go outside of our property without someone going with you, Serene. You really did have us all worried. We don't want to lose you." Council stated as he patted the key gently on her head.

Serene nodded before speaking. "Yes, father."

"Well I am sure Serene is very hungry as am I. Mother, would you like me to help you with dinner?" Andrew smiled up at his mother. Solstris smiled and nodded. "I would love some help, Andrew." She said as she led the young boy to the kitchen.

"Tricky, why don't you go and help them. I need to talk to Serene alone for a few minutes." Council spoke softly. Tricky looked at him suspiciously before walking to the kitchen. Council then picked up the young key and headed to his lab.

-Flashback-

Months ago a man with dragon wings sat in a lab looking over his blueprints. He had managed to create the body of a young child, the only thing missing was the imprint of a key. The man had tried almost everything to create the imprint of a key, but all experiments were failures.

"Why can't I get this imprint to work?" the man sighed as he laid his head on the desk. After a few minutes he looked over his ingredients before getting an idea. Perhaps if he were to get the DNA of an actual key, maybe then the imprint would work. All he would need to do is find a key and get some of their DNA.

The man then got up and headed to the dimension of the keys. It would be a long journey, but the results of his creation would be worth the journey.

-END-

Council carried his young key into the lab and set her down on his desk. He then began his weekly check-up. First, he made sure both her eyes worked correctly, then he checked her reflexes, next her heart beat and other vital organs. Lastly, he checked her imprint to make sure nothing had damaged it. It was extremely important that Serene's key imprint did not crack, for if it did it would cause her emotions to go all out of whack. With enough cracks her imprint would be dangerously close to shattering.

"Well nothing seems to be out of place or broken. Is there anything I should know, my sweet little key?" he asked softly. Serene looked up at her father and shook her head. "No daddy."

The man then hugged the small key. He wrapped his one good wing around her as he hugged her. "Please do not ever scare me like that again." Council said before kissing his daughter's head.

"I won't, daddy. I won't." She replied softly.
