Danny Williams
This imagine was requested by Fandom-Before-Blood and I hope you love it as much as I loved writing it. I'm actually really happy with it! Now enjoy, lovelies!
Students streamed out of the school in small groups, and were greeted by waiting parents in the parking lot. A few of them glanced, intrigued, at the woman seated in the driver's seat of a black Camaro. Indeed, they were curious as to why the lady with short curly brown hair and sunglasses was lovingly stroking the steering wheel.
Well, you see, this was the first time Gabriella, the woman, actually got to drive this car in her whole four years spent with it (and its silver predecessor, before it was destroyed on a case).
This was the vehicle she, Agent Gabriella Way, along with Commander Steve McGarrett and Detective Sergeant Danny Williams used for their work as part of the Hawaii Five-0 task force. Now, despite actually being Danny's car, it was always driven by Steve. Always. Because, as the control freak Navy Seal he was, it could not be any other way.
So, of course, most rides consisted of Danny (seated shotgun) complaining that it was his car and just generally arguing with Steve like a whiny five year old, while Gabriella was stuck in the back seat feeling like a child, occasionally making snarky comments and generally being slightly bored.
But today, Danny had to stay at Headquarters to check on everything while Steve attended a meeting with the governor. Since he had Grace's custody for the week, he had asked Gabriella to pick her up at school. This worked out well for her because she could also pick up her son, Fred, who was the same age as Grace, and usually took the bus home. So Gabriella was currently basking in the glory of the driver's seat.
Soon, two backpack-clad children were seen racing toward her car. The girl got there first, and stuck her tongue out at the boy, before putting her small arms through the open driver seat window to give Gabriella a hug.
"Hey Ella!" She exclaimed happily. "How are you?"
"I'm doing great, Grace. Your dad told you I was picking you up today?"
She nodded, smiling, before getting in the back seat. Fred came to the window, and pecked Gabriella on the cheek. "Hey Mom!"
"Hey Pumpkin! How was your day?" Gabriella asked, smiling at her son.
"MOO-OOOM!" Fred exclaimed as Grace giggled in the back. "Don't call me Pumpkin, I'm not three years old anymore!"
"What, Freddie? Are you scared Kalea will hear?" Grace's voice came from the back of the car, emphasizing on Kalea while Fred made wild gestures for her to stop talking. But alas, it was too late for him because his mother had heard. She whipped around to face Danny's daughter, who was sitting smugly in the back.
"WHAT?" Gabriella shouted. "A girl?! My little Freddie has a crush? Oh, this is wonderful, I can't wait until you two go on your first date, I'll have to take pictures! Freddie, get in the car, and Grace, TELL. ME. EVERYTHING!" Gabriella spoke very quickly, embracing her 'embarrassing mom' title.
Fred got in the car, completely defeated by his mother's antics, while Grace babbled away to Gabriella about the lovely Hawaiian girl who had caught Fred's eyes in his math class. Soon, Gabriella knew everything there was to know about the situation between her son and the girl, and Fred looked like he wanted to melt away into nothingness.
Seeing how her son was reacting to her knowledge of his current romance, Gabriella decided to change the subject so as not to antagonize him further. "So kids! Danno is coming over later once he's done with work, so the four of us are going to have dinner together! Now, last time, he made dinner, and we DO NOT want to live that experience again, but don't tell him I said that." Grace and Fred giggled. "So, I thought we could order in! What do you guys want to eat?"
The response came immediately from the two, and Gabriella wondered why she even asked. "PIZZA!"
Gabriella chuckled. "Alright, pizza it is!"
*LATER IN TIME AND SPACE, AT AROUND 6 PM AT GABRIELLA'S HOUSE*
Danny thanked Chin for giving him a ride, before stepping out of the car and into the driveway. As he set foot on the ground, he noticed it felt as though it was shaking. Not thinking much of it, he walked toward the door and opened it, knowing Ella had left it unlocked for him.
The second the door was opened, Danny was assaulted by quite possibly the loudest music he had ever heard. He immediately put his hands over his ears, but that did nothing to stop him hearing the sound, and it continued to make his head pound. It was so loud, he couldn't even recognize what song it was.
Cursing under his breath, although he could have screamed and the music would have still covered his swearing, he made his way to Gabriella's bedroom, where he knew she kept her sound system.
After spending so much time with the fun, bubbly, and youthful woman, Danny had come to expect the unexpected from Ella. So the sight that greeted him as he stood in the doorway didn't cause him so much surprise and shock as it did amusement and awe.
Grace, Fred, and Ella were all jumping on the bed, flailing their arms around in some sort of drunken giraffe dance. They were all in their pyjamas, wearing pink wigs over their heads and sunglasses that were too big for Grace and Fred's faces, each of them clutching a toothbrush in their hands like a microphone as they sang along to the song, astounding Danny as to how they could possibly understand the lyrics considering the volume. The three of them looked so happy, and it was so beautiful to watch them that it almost made him forget how loud and painful the music was. Almost.
He ran over to the sound system, which had Grace's iPod plugged in, and he slammed the "Off" button harder than he'd ever slammed anything in his life. He saw that the song that had been playing turned out to be "I Really Like You" as the iPod screen flashed before going black again.
"...REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY LIKE YOU, AND I WANT YOU, DO YOU-" Gabriella stopped singing, realizing the music had stopped. She spun around, finally noticing Danny who was standing by the sound system clutching his head, hoping the ringing echoing through it would soon stop. "DANNY!" She yelled, and he flinched at the loudness of her voice. "I didn't see you there! Why'd you turn off the music? We were having loads of fun, the kids and me, you could've joined us!" She exclaimed, smiling as always.
"Why did I turn off the music? I was trying to save your sense of hearing! Do you know how loud that was? The house was shaking. Actually shaking," he answered Gabriella. "I'm sure the three of you are deaf by now," he added.
"What? I can't hear you, Danny!" Ella replied jokingly, making the kids, who had jumped off the bed to hug Danny, giggle as they ran out of the room. Danny was about to make another witty remark when whatever clever sarcastic words about to be spoken died in his throat.
Gabriella had just jumped off the bed, sending herself high in the air, her head almost grazing the ceiling of the room. Her crazy pink wig fell off, letting her short brown curls tumble out of it and bounce around her head. As she landed, her sunglasses slipped down her nose, revealing stunning blue eyes that made Danny's knees weak. She may have been in a banana patterned onesie and wearing no makeup but to him, she looked like a goddess fallen from the skies.
She picked up the fallen wig, and placed it on Danny'd head. "There, now you're fabulous," she told him happily. She frowned, as he was staring at her intensely and his mouth was hanging open. "Danny? What is it? What's wrong? Do I have something on my face?" She tried to look at herself in the lens of the sunglasses.
Danny finally recovered from this angelic vision. "Wha- no, your face is fine. There's nothing wrong with your face. Nothing, really, it's perfect. Absolutely perfect," he babbled, slightly embarrassed at being caught so off guard by her beauty. "I was just lost in my thoughts."
"Well, okay then. Everything alright at Headquarters? Have you heard from Steve? And how did you get here?" Gabriella asked, completely forgetting about Danny's oddness.
"Everything is fine, Steve will call me when it's over, and Chin gave me a ride," he responded. "So, you, everything went well with-" he was interrupted by the sound of the doorbell.
"Ooh, pizza's here! Come on!" Gabriella exclaimed, excited about the most mundane of things, as she grabbed his hand and dragged him to the door with her.
*LATER IN TIME AND SPACE, AT AROUND 10 PM STILL AT GABRIELLA'S HOUSE*
Danny was enjoying this. He was enjoying this very much indeed. The woman he had a great liking for was cuddled up next to him, head leaning on his chest as she intently stared at the television, and he in turn stared intently at her. Of course, she didn't notice because she was much too focused on the movie playing: the Avengers.
Danny could feel the warmth radiate off her, and he was enjoying the time alone with her. Sure, he spent a lot of time with her at work, but there was always something to do or someone in the way. And when they hung out after work, the kids were nearly always with them. But, now, he got to relax with her and he could almost imagine they were a couple.
Danny had started to have these...feelings for the beautiful brunette hardly a few months after her move to Hawaii. But he was stopped from acting on them by the looming shadow of the reason of her move: the disappearance and presumed death at sea of her husband John.
Danny had been a shoulder for Ella to cry on when the pain of his loss got too much. She had had very few breakdowns, considering she had to face the living image of her lost love every day, as Fred was the spitting image of him, with his spiky brown hair, brown eyes, and brilliant smile. Despite feeling rather jealous of the man, Danny had to face the fact that he was grateful that he had taken such good care of her.
John had been an astronomer, and had charmed Ella with his words about the stars and faraway worlds. He had brought her along on many adventures, as he liked to call trips, and had been a great father to Fred. All this made Danny all the more miserable, because he couldn't see how he could possibly match the late husband in all his wonderfulness.
Nevertheless, he had hope that she would one day get over John, although he doubted it would ever be to move on with him. Danny thought that, since she was always so comfortable and herself around him, it was because she didn't consider him at all like a potential lover, but as nothing more than a very good friend.
Suddenly, Danny's cellphone started to ring, distracting him from his defeatist thoughts. Gabriella paused the movie and glanced up at his head as he answered.
"Hey, how'd it go?" Danny spoke into the phone. Gabriella heard nothing as the other person talked, but saw Danny's face grow into a worried, then angry expression.
"Oh, yes. I love how you use that word, Steve," he finally spoke again, putting a hand to his forehead. "Interesting. Isn't it so interesting to know that there was a leak that contained most of our personal information and let it wander free on the whole poisonous web that is the Internet for any criminal to grasp at, yes Steve, that is very interesting."
Gabriella sat up straight upon hearing this. She was worried about her son, and Grace, and Danny. She gestured for the latter to put the call on speaker phone, so she could hear Steve's words.
"...know that all the info has been downloaded on one single flash drive, so all we have to do is find that and everything will be fine," Steve spoke at the other end of the line. "Unless whoever has the flash drive is making copies of it to sell to all those who have a vendetta against any member of the team, in which case they'll be able to reach any of our close friends or relatives," he added.
"Thank you, Steve, thank you, for those comforting words. I feel so much better now, right Ella, don't you feel absolutely relieved?" Danny said. Ella knew he was stressed, but he tried to hide it with his usual snarky demeanour. She squeezed his shoulder in support.
"Well, you two coming? We have a lead," Steve said.
This time Gabriella spoke up. "Steve, we can't just leave like this. The kids are asleep, we can't leave them all alone and-"
"Ella, don't worry, I figured you'd say that so I planned something. Look out your window."
Confused, Danny and Ella stood up and walked over to the window. They lifted the curtain and, there, in the driveway, was Steve's pick-up truck, containing the man himself, along with Jerry. The two waved upon upon seeing the figures in the window.
"Steve, please tell me that you're not about to suggest what I think you're about to suggest," Danny said.
"Guys, he was available on short notice, and he'll stay awake while the kids sleep. He's been on a few cases, he knows what to do if something happens," Steve pleaded, knowing they were wasting time.
"Oh yeah," Jerry interjected into the phone. "I'm totally cool with kids. I have, like, three in the Sims, and only one of them ever died. And that was a glitch in the program, so I'm totally a qualified taker-carer of kids. Also, what's your wifi password? I wanted to see if anyone checked out my Aliens Are Among Us blog recently."
Gabriella face palmed.
*TWO HOURS LATER IN TIME AND SPACE, AFTER MANY THREATS WERE CONJURED TOWARD JERRY IF ANYTHING WAS WRONG WITH THE KIDS AT DANNY AND ELLA'S RETURN AND A DRIVE TO THE SUSPECTED LOCATION OF THE BEHOLDER OF THE FLASH DRIVE*
Gabriella and Danny stood behind Steve as he knocked forcefully on the door of the old run-down shack on the edge of the forest, and said in his best commando voice. "Jim Kovarian? This is Five-0, open up!"
Silence for a few moments, and then a crash was heard behind the house. "He's trying to get away, move!" Steve exclaimed, and the three ran into the forest in pursuit of the man, splitting up along the way.
Gabriella slowed to a walk as she heard no sounds of running footsteps ahead of her. With only the small light provided by her gun, she spun around, trying to figure out where she was, to no avail.
She was deep within the forest, and it was eerie this late at night. Silence had fallen around her, there were countless shadows that danced around, some reminding her of creepy figures: wolves, masked figures, angels...Wait, masked figures?
Gabriella turned at the speed of light toward that one shadow she doubted was a shadow anymore, illuminating the form of a masked man with a gun. She was about to yell for the others when agony in her stomach rendered her shout for assistance into a blood-curdling scream, the only sound in the dead of night, covering the escaping footsteps of the shooter.
Danny froze at the sound, immediately forgetting about the suspect, about the flash drive, about Steve. Everything emptied itself of his mind except for her. He ran.
He ran faster than he'd ever run before, the fear for her fuelling him. His senses seemed enhanced as he delved into the forest unobstructed by branches or the darkness, being guided toward her almost magically. He reached her in less than thirty seconds after he heard that terribly chilling sound.
Her name was on his lips before his brain could process he was saying it, as he knelt in the grass next to a mound of darkness lying in a helpless heap, heaving heavy struggling breaths. "Gabriella."
The rasping voice that had been joyfully singing just hours before responded faintly. "Danny?"
His heart broke at the sound of it. "Yeah, Ella, it's me, it's me."
"I've been shot," she said.
"Yeah, I-I know, Ella. But you'll be fine. Steve's probably called an ambulance, and they're on their way, and you'll be fine," he said, trying to convince himself as much as her. His hand reached for hers. It was full of blood.
She sighed. "I guess I won't be able to take pictures of Fred's first date, after all. You will take care of him for me, won't you? Make sure he doesn't eat too many sweets, goes to bed early, does his homework." She chuckled weakly, a feeble sound in a feeble body.
Danny shook his head, feeling the tears stream down his face. "No. Come on, Ella, you're a fighter, fight this, come on, fight this for me. Please," he said, his voice cracking on the last word. And suddenly, perhaps it was the fact that he was so close to losing her, but he felt washed over by a wave of courage, and it tumbled out of him in words.
"Gabriella Way, my Ella. You are the most fantastic, amazing, awe-inspiring woman I have ever met," he whispered to her in the complete silence, bending low to breathe the words into her ear. "And I have been irrevocably in love with you ever since you came into my life, and I have been incredibly stupid not to grow the balls to tell you until now. And I don't have a beautiful speech to say right now, and I know that this isn't the most romantic location for a declaration of love. But this is me, a simple, ordinary man who loves the ever complex, ever extraordinary you, begging you with all his heart to not give up, to hang on." He finished talking, holding his breath.
Gabriella stayed silent for a few moments, and Danny worriedly wondered if she had blacked out. But a gentle squeeze of his hand told him otherwise, and he strained his ears to hear the words she breathed out next.
"I'm hanging on, Danny. I'm hanging on to you."
