Chapter Two
Harvey Specter: The unicorn with a scowl
🦄🦄🦄
When Mike finally regains his consciousness for the first time, he feels a dull pain in his legs. He peels his eyes open slowly, taking his time to adjust with the light in the room. It takes him approximately a minute to totally open his eyes and apprehend the situation he is in. If he isn't wrong, he is right now in a hospital. And for a change, it's not him sitting on a chair, visiting his grandma at the nursing home. No, this time he is the patient.
What happened? He questions himself. Running his hazy memory while shaking away the tiredness, he tries to check himself to see where the injury lies. He doesn't know why but he is feeling a bit funny at the pit of his stomach. Shouldn't he be in utter pain? Then why is he feeling so jolly right now?
His mind is blank right now. Well, he didn't really expect to recall anything at this moment. He also didn't expect to see a pair of bored eyes looking at him straight. Mike jerks up, trying to bring himself into a sitting position. This man can probably be a potential danger and he needs to be prepared. Damn, where is his highlighter?
He blinks again but the man doesn't move. Definitely not a hallucination.
"Who the hell are you?" Mike questions, his voice slow and hoarse.
"Easy there, tiger. You don't want to hurt yourself more, do you?" The unnamed man calmly says as if he were talking to an uncooperative and tantrum throwing child. That's a big blow to his adulthood.
"Who are you?" He tries again, this time with more ease, more confidence.
"Harvey. Harvey Specter." The man introduces himself, looking anything but amused. He appears annoyed for some reason. Mike can see through the exterior of his fake polite smile.
"Are you a famous celebrity?" His question seems to catch the middle aged man off-guard, he squints his eyes in confusion.
"No?" The man sounds unsure.
"Famous businessman?" Mike asks again. Now, the man doesn't bother with his polite smile anymore. He looks annoyed through and through.
"What is this? 20 questions?" The man snorts, looking at Mike dismissively.
"Then how am I supposed to know who Harvey Specter is?" Mike grits out, sarcasm coming out in waves from his tone.
The man rolls his eyes before meeting Mike's fuzzy eyes again.
"CIA agent who saved your ass last night, hotshot." The man sounds oddly cocky yet professional at the same time.
Now that Mike has an entail, he can use his brain as a search engine and learn what happened and how he found himself here. The man, Harvey, keeps staring at him as if he were trying to decode his weird action. Mike watches the man calling for a nurse while he keeps thinking about last night. Given his hyperactive brain, it shouldn't take him much time. But his mind seems cloudy while the funny feeling settles in his stomach.
"Hey, Mr.Agent, do you have two heads? Actually no, I can see three heads." Mike mumbles to himself, narrowing his eyes to see better so that he can count how many heads the agent has.
"What are you talking about, kid?"
"Is that why you guys are secret agents? Because you have secrets? You can grow heads and then… then you can shapeshift too like werewolves?" Mike blabbers nonsense, finding it amusing.
"Why's the nurse taking so long?" Harvey mutters, alarmed and irritated by that kid. It was better when he was asleep. Harvey could really use some sleep.
"Oh my God! You are a unicorn!" Mike laughs, imagining a colourful horn over Harvey's head.
"Lose the scowl. You make an awful unicorn. They are supposed to be cheerful and happy!"
"Like you?" Mike's smile drops at that.
"I'm anything but happy, Mr.Unicorn." He whispers, losing the enthusiasm that his voice earlier held.
Harvey watches how the kid is experiencing mood swings every few minutes. He is happy and then he is sad and now he is happy again.
"Is that… Is that a cast on my leg?" Mike asks, sounding as cheerful as a child on Christmas morning.
Harvey narrows his eyes at the kid, thinking about the drastic change in his behaviour. He didn't sign up for this. He has better work to do than to babysit a kid who seems out of his mind. He seems high.
"The fact that you sound so cheerful, is concerning." Harvey comments. He can't be any more surprised when the kid starts clapping excitedly.
A few seconds later a nurse enters the room and checks on Mike. She asks him some questions to which he answers with nonsense. The nurse just smiles at him and plays along.
"He is on pain meds. That's why he is acting like this. He just woke up so the medicine is taking a troll on him. " The nurse informs Harvey who comes over to check up on him. Harvey already had an idea.
Harvey nods his head in understanding. No wonder the kid is acting so weird. Who starts clapping because they broke their leg?
"Do you know it's my first time breaking a bone like this!" His excitement soars by ten fold as he grins at the nurse and then at Harvey.
"It's not like I haven't broken a bone before. It's not my fault that I'm naturally clumsy, the world is just too cruel to me." He literally pouts his lips which compels the nurse to ruffle his hair and Harvey to roll his eyes.
"The first time I broke a bone, I was six. I was wearing white. That little idiot shoved me off the swing, I broke my left arm and my head. My white shirt became red that day." Mike continues his sob story, patting his arm and temple dramatically, looking at the nurse with puppy eyes. The nurse takes the hint and gives him a fond smile and pats his arm and temple.
"Once I fell from my bike. I broke some ribs. And then once!" His voice catches raw enthusiasm again, he looks like a puppy, happily wagging his tail.
"Once someone stole Grammy's bag! I ran after him and got the bag back but he shoved me into a running car. This counts as a brave encounter too, right?" He excitedly asks, Harvey lets the nurse handle the hyperactive kid.
"Yes, it does. You are such a brave kid." Mike grins at the nurse. She looks kind.
"And this cast!" He points at his leg, looking back at the nurse and Harvey who is now sitting on a chair and reading a magazine.
"It's proof of my bravery! You should have seen my fight against that bulky bull. I stopped his family tree from growing any further." Mike laughs like a maniac, remembering how he hit the man's balls with his highlighter.
Mike turns to his left and glares at Harvey who makes a snorting sound behind the magazine. Mike turns to the nurse and flashes his big blue puppy eyes at her again. Thankfully, the nurse receives his message again.
"Don't pay him any attention. He doesn't know how it's done. I, on the other hand, find you totally cool! I wish I could see you in action." The nurse laughs a little as she consoles Mike, finding his expression utterly cute. She then goes back to taking his vitals.
"I can show you now. I just need a highlighter and… and a model to demonstrate it." His eyes roam around the room only to stop at Harvey.
"He can play the bull." Mike enthusiastically points his finger at Harvey, smiling ear to ear.
At once, Harvey keeps the magazine in its place and glares at Mike. He wants to be rude and yell a little to make the kid behave but the kid looks like he will cry if he raises his voice. So, Harvey braces himself and resorts to using sarcasm.
"And lose my family tree before it starts? I'm not married yet for God's sake." Harvey gives him a closed mouth smile.
Where are his subordinates? He sent those idiots to freshen up and bring him a cup of coffee. By now, even if they were making coffee by grinding coffee beans with their hands, it should be done yet there's no sign of them. He is stuck with a drunk kid and a nurse who will do anything the kid asks her to.
"You aren't? But you look old enough to be my dad." Mike observes, looking deep in thoughts.
Harvey looks offended. He agrees he looks slightly out of his elements right now. His perfectly gelled hair is a mess, his dress shirt is wrinkled and he looks like he hasn't slept forever but that doesn't make The Great Harvey Specter old enough to be the father of a 20 year old.
"Listen, Kid-"
"Please be patient with him. He sounds like a sweet child." Harvey opens his mouth to answer the nurse but he can't come up with anything so he closes it again, looking like a guppy fish.
Mike sticks his tongue out at Harvey like a child. Sweet my ass! Harvey bets this kid will regret his action when he gets his sense back. He is acting like a foolish child right now. It's nothing like the behaviour he read from files about him. He doesn't expect the kid to act sane while he is high on pain meds but it doesn't mean that he is liking it.
"He can play the bull you are talking about but we don't have a highlighter and you need to sleep." The nurse mumbles gently, running her frail fingers through his hair. Mike smiles weakly at her. She is sweet. His eyes droop once again as darkness invites him to their world. He couldn't turn away from the temptation.
________
The next time Mike opened his eyes, he found himself in the car, suffocated and almost dead. He found his mother in the driver seat. He was angry at his mother for some reason and that's why he was sitting in the backseat. And suddenly their car was hit by a huge truck.Their car flipped over. Mike lost his consciousness momentarily and when he regained it, his eyes widened to see one of the rods that the delivery truck was carrying went straight through his mother's heart.
Mike blinked his eyes in disbelief and then he kept blinking his weak eyes in hope that the scenery would change. There's no way it was happening!
"Mom! " He yelled, or tried to but his voice didn't even reach his own ears.
He found blood dripping from his head. His eyes were dropping close but he needed to save his mother. The sight of her was so horrible that it felt like the rod went straight through his own heart.
"Mom!" He cried again, trying his best to get away but his little limbs were stuck, leaving him helpless.
He clinged onto the little bit of consciousness that he had and cried for help for hours but nothing came. He wished he had his father there with him. He wished his father didn't die in a house fire a year prior to this. This father could handle the situation. He could rescue him and his mother and bring them back to safety. He was just 11! How could he help his mother in that state?
"Dad! Please help!" He yelled desperately, trying to free his arms that's stuck.
"Mom!" He yelled once again before he found himself in a different scenario.
He hated the smirks on their faces. He wanted to wipe it off. He was scared when the bulky man advanced towards him but he put on a brave front. He was gonna die in their hands. Once again, he was helpless. He wished he took the fighting session his father forced him to take but he threw a fit and his mother came to his rescue. Where were his parents now? He's so alone in the big scary world. He needed them. Where were they?
And then the scene shifted again. This time he watched three of those tragedies together. He watched his father burning in the house fire while he was out, playing hide and seek with his friend. He watched his mother taking her last breath painfully right in front of his eyes. He watched getting attacked by those strange men. He needed an escape. It was becoming too much! He couldn't take it anymore. It's hard to take breaths.
"No! Come back!" Mike yells, tears cascading down his cheeks, thrashing around on the bed.
"Mike!" But Mike is far too deep into the abyss of trauma to respond to the voice.
"Hey, Kid! It's alright. You are alright." But Mike doesn't stop. He isn't alright. He keeps mumbling nonsense under his breath.
"Mike! It's alright. I got you, kid. You are safe. Just open his eyes." The voice sounds so gentle, so familiar that Mike flickers his eyes open.
"There you are. It was just a bad dream." Mike breaks into tears, seeing his dad standing there, towering over him, whispering sweet nothing to calm him down.
Mike jolts up and brings his father into a right embrace before his father leaves him again. He missed him so much. He sobs on his father's shoulder, whispering, "Please, don't leave me again. I missed you so much, dad, please." Again and again like a mantra.
Harvey freezes at the sudden skin ship. He didn't sign up for this. Physical contact isn't his type, especially when he doesn't even know the kid who is hugging him like there is no tomorrow. But then again he feels Mike's body trembling against him as he keeps mumbling those words. Harvey can be many things, he can not show emotions or he is not a person you come to seek comfort but he isn't heartless. He just can't shove the kid away. But that doesn't mean he will break his walls and wrap his hands around the kid. He reluctantly lets the boy think that he is his father and lets him cry on his shoulder. His shirt is ruined anyway.
Harvey doesn't know how long it takes for the kid to quiet down his full blown sob. He is still crying but it's not as severe as the first moment. Harvey tries to get the kid off of his arms but the kid is stuck to him like super glue. He huffs, letting the kid cling onto him. His reputation will be ruined if one of his subordinates catches him like this. Harvey Specter doesn't show emotions, he doesn't give anyone a shoulder to cry on.
"Awww, isn't it heartwarming?" Harvey's worst nightmare takes the form of a feverish reality. He darts his gaze at the newcomer who is leaning on the doorframe.
"Donna?" Harvey whispers, surprise written all over his face.
