Part 50: Wonder
A long, boring week dragged on. Mikasa had started to notice her ankles swelling up. I guess that's what usually happens when you hit your third trimester.
"Two more months," she whispered to herself while she stood on the scale.
The scale read "153.8". She smiled. She didn't even feel pregnant.
She went down stares in only a long shirt and underwear. No one was home. She didn't really know what to do for the summer. Armin went on vacation with his family, and she had no other friends.
Levi was off somewhere for work. He would be gone until 12:00 am. She thought maybe there was something with Eren that had happened, but they hadn't contacted each other since.
-
Three days had passed.
Saturday at 7:30 p.m., Levi left the house with Hanji.
-
Levi pulled back Hanji's chair at the table. He'd decided to take her on a nice, expensive date at Avienda Brazil.
Hanji wore a long, tight, black dress that opened up on her leg. Her hair was pulled up, and her thin, normal glasses were on. She wore a pare of dangling pearl earrings and a small diamond necklace.
She looks beautiful. Levi thought to himself.
Levi wore a regular buttoned up white shirt, with sleeves rolled up to his elbows and ordinary black dress pants and shoes with a watch.
He sat down, already blushing when his butt hit his chair.
"Why so fancy?" Hanji asked.
"I've never taken you out on an expensive date, so," he replied.
He wiped his sweaty hand on the leg that was rapidly tapping the ground.
"I told you I don't need fancy," she smiled.
Before Levi could respond, a waitress came up to them, "Good evening. How are we doing?"
Hanji looked up at her and smiled, "swell."
"That's great. Could I start you off with drinks?" She pulled out a notebook.
"White wine," Hanji told the waitress.
Levi didn't hear the girl at first when she asked him.
"Sir?"
His head snapped, "uh... uh, water."
"That's it? Have you two looked at your menus yet and decided what you want?" She asked.
"Not yet, no," Hanji answered, eyeing Levi, concerned, as she did.
"Could I get you any appetizers?"
"No, thank you," she smiled and looked at her like nicely saying "go away". The waitress followed Hanji's orders and walked away to go bother another couple.
"So, I've been reading this book called Remembered," Hanji started, "Have you read it?"
"Um... no," Levi avoided eye contact. You need to calm down. He told himself.
"Well, it's about this man who moved his family and himself to Poland during the 1940's. Great time to live there right... sorry, not a joke, but anyways, he's not a Jew, but his wife was. His children were also part Jew because of his wife. He only practiced Christianity, but he let his wife and children do their thing. Of course, the Jewish oppression and propaganda started to come. He wasn't affected physically by it, but was torn apart by his family getting thrown around from it."
Levi wasn't even listening to her. He couldn't focus.
"When they had to start wearing the Jewish stars on their clothes is when he started to become concerned. He went to one meeting held by the Jews with his wife, and that's where he screwed up with himself. He—"
"Hanji," Levi's shaky voice snapped, "I have a question..."
"Hmm?" She tilted her head, thinking how it was a bit rude to interrupt her like that.
His hand, soaking with sweat, dug into his pocket trying to find a small box. He hesitated to pull it out of his pocket, but managed to do so. He slowly scooted from the table. He kneled on the floor in front of the woman his heart of stone somehow fell in love with.
Hanji instantly clasped her hands over her mouth.
"Hanji Zoe is a beautiful name that belongs to a beautiful woman," his voice shook, "but I think Hanji Ackerman would sound sound a lot better. Will you marry me?"
Tears welled up in the woman's eyes, "Levi... oh my god... yes! Yes! Yes! Nothing but yes!"
As he started to stand up, she lunged towards him in an embrace. They were so in the moment that they didn't even hear the applause the people of the restaurant were giving them.
Wrapped up in her arms. Never wanting to let go. It was perfect.
-
Mikasa sat and stared at her phone at a picture of a boy she stupidly let go. An off guard picture of him Mikasa took while he was smiling. She frowned.
He was the one thing that made her smile. Laugh. Happy. She wanted him back.
Why?! Why the fuck am I like this?! She thought.
She thought back to what Armin said about texting her other friends. Just to see what they would say. So they could rekindle.
She opened up Snapchat. She closed it. She opened up iMessage. She closed it. She opened up the phone app. She closed it.
She groaned. Longing for her friends, her boyfriend... her life back.
She wasn't sure who to call. Or if she shouldn't call but text that who. Sasha? Jean? Maybe even Connie?
She wondered how Sasha and Connie had been doing. She was picking up hints of them being a thing again before Sasha abandoned her. She wondered what Sasha thought about her now. Was Mikasa a slut to her too? Or was it just too much to handle being insulted about being bestfriends with one.
She wondered about whether Jean still loved her or had found a new girl to chase after. She wondered what he'd think of she just texted him 'hey'.
She wondered about Marco and where the hell he went. She wondered what it'd be like if they hung out again. All of them. Together. Like they used to.
She wondered about Eren. About what dumbass stunts he's been up to. What trouble he's gotten himself into. Whether they would ever be anything again.
Ding
A notification popped up at the top of her screen.
Eren
