Chapter 7
Isle Irene was as beautiful as the woman it was named after.
It's a small emerald land with pearly white sand surrounded by sapphire blue waters. There were different kinds of plants and trees and animals that thrived in that area. There was a huge and luxurious villa built at the heart of the island inspired by French architecture and French chateau interior. There were islands and islets surrounding the piece of land but most of it were inhabited.
There were two ways on how you could enter the island: by riding a boat or a chopper.
The three siblings together with Jeno rode on a boat while the married couple chose the chopper. Solji didn't mind because she could take a lot of pictures and see the neighboring lands.
"I'm just hoping they're not planning to make a fourth baby," Jungwoo said while drinking a can of beer.
"Hell, if they're planning to make a fourth one then I'm old enough to be considered as the father of that child!" Doyoung exclaimed and he started fretting about his age which terrified Jungwoo as well.
While Solji was watching the scenery, Jeno approached her and leaned on the railing, looking at the horizon.
"Hey," Jeno said and Solji turned to look at him. Jeno was squinting his eyes to block the sprinkle of salt water and his soft black hair was being blown by the strong wind. He was wearing a simple oversized shirt and shorts but he looked handsome as always. Solji's eyes darted to his glossy red lips and she instantly felt her cheeks heating up.
She suddenly remembered the night they were trapped in the warehouse. How they were leaning in together and they wouldn't have stopped if they were not interrupted. The thing that irritated her the most was the fact that Jeno was not even affected or felt just a tinge of awkwardness.
"Hey," she greeted back looking away.
"Did you sleep well last night?"
"Yeah. Of course," she lied.
They didn't say a word again and simply watched as the scenery fade into blur. The silence was comfortable as they stood side by side.
Minutes later, the boat arrived at the shore and the four got out. The water was cold and the sand was fine under their feet. Jungwoo instantly lied on the white sand and rolled over like a puppy. Doyoung dragged Jeno somewhere and asked to take pictures of him to post on Instagram. Solji went ahead of the villa first. Everywhere she look was sight to behold. She loved how the villa was surrounded by greenery but she could still see the water from the distance.
It's like having a vacation in one of the countryside of Italy.
Solji breathed in fresh air and entered the house.
"Where are the others?" Suho asked as he gave his daughter a hug.
"Outside. Fooling around. When are we going to eat lunch? I'm starving!"
"In a moment, princess. They will have our food served outside at one of the cottages near the beach. You'll love it!
Solji beamed at her father and went upstairs to choose a room she was going to occupy for the rest of the stay. She chose the bedroom with the best view on the second floor. The floor to ceiling window faced the crystal blue sea and she could spot the little neighboring islands from afar. It also had a little balcony that overlooked that beach which she could leave it open to invite in fresh air.
When their luggage arrived and the other three followed in, Solji changed her clothes before meeting them downstairs for lunch.
She changed into a pair of red bikini underneath a pair of tattered denim shorts and a bright yellow ruffled top with puffy sleeves. She got her phone and joined the others.
The lunch was a feast. All the seafood dishes that Solji loved were served on the table and her mouth instantly watered. She was eating heartily while doing a little happy dance, unaware of the pair of eyes watching her.
Jeno smiled discreetly to himself as he watched a certain girl dance while eating.
After everyone was well-rested, they continued onto their own businesses. Suho and Irene were resting under the shade of a huge umbrella sitting on a foldable beach chair while drinking fresh fruit juice. Solji decided to take a swim so she stripped off her clothes and left her red bikini on. When she stepped out of the changing room, Jeno immediately turned his head to look at her.
Solji noticed the way he was raking at her body using his eyes. Though he tried his best to look respectfully, it still didn't miss the fact that he admired her body. Solji blushed at the realization that he was checking her out. But instead of taking a swim as she originally planned, she settled on one of the beach chairs, enjoying the attention she was getting from him.
Jeno thought he was discreet enough, but Doyoung and Jungwoo were sharp.
"Gawking at your fiancé, huh? Lee Jeno! You're naughty!" Jungwoo teased Jeno and poked his sides to tickle him.
"I didn't---"
"Don't lie to us! We've seen the way you look at her! Yah, Jeno, don't think of doing anything to my sister!" Doyoung said.
"I'm not planning to do anything to her!"
"Do you think she's pretty?"
"Do you find her cute?"
"Does she make you feel nervous?"
"Does she make your heart race?"
Before Jungwoo could even shot him the next question, Jeno squirmed from their hold and escaped. He managed to put enough space between them to answer their questions.
"Yes! A hundred times yes!" he yelled and ran.
Doyoung and Jungwoo stood there speechless as they looked at each other.
"I think our sister just hit the jackpot," Doyoung said to his younger brother.
"Too bad she doesn't know it yet but that's okay. At least we can have our entertainment for now," Jungwoo said and Doyoung agreed.
Jeno came back shortly after, carrying a volleyball. They set up the net and asked Suho to join them. Suho and Jungwoo were in one team and Doyoung and Jeno belong in the opposing team. Solji moved from her chair and replaced her father's chair beside Irene who was peacefully reading a book about feminism.
Solji was used to seeing men topless because she had two older brothers who liked to strip off their top parading around the house.
But she almost spat her drink when Jeno stripped off his shirt, revealing a six pack of toned abs. His body was full of taut muscles that even her father and brothers praised it.
"Look respectfully, my dear," Irene said beside her and she was startled.
"I'm not doing anything!"
"Okay, if you say so. I'm just telling you to look respectfully."
Solji ignored her mother and looked back to the volleyball game.
"Princess!" Suho called. "You'll be the referee and scorer!"
Great. Now she was given such an important task when she couldn't even focus on the game itself without her eyes darting to a certain topless boy with toned abs.
She was so distracted to the point where both teams were arguing if the ball was out or not. Jungwoo hit the ball and Doyoung said it was out because it hit past the line. Jungwoo, being competitive, didn't accept it.
"Let's ask the referee," Suho said and all four of them turned to Solji whose eyes were fixated on Jeno.
"What?"
"Is it out or not?" Suho asked.
"It's out I saw it!" Doyoung said.
"You're not the referee so shut your trap!" Jungwoo sassed and Doyoung crossed over the other side to punch his younger brother and Jungwoo ran away. "Hey! Referee! Give this man a yellow card! He's punching me! Help! He's trying to murder me! Red card!"
Solji rolled her eyes at her overdramatic brothers and just like that, the game ended. Solji was slightly disappointed when Jeno put his shirt back on but instantly felt ashamed of herself when she realized that her mother was reading a book about feminism beside her and there she was thirsting over a shirtless guy.
"There's a club on the island next to us," Suho said to all of them. "Maybe you want to visit it."
"I'll go! I want to party!" Jungwoo said. "Hyung? Jeno?"
"I'll go! I need to take a lot of pictures and post it on my insta. Taeyong will surely regret not coming with us," Doyoung answered.
"I'll go, too," Jeno replied then glanced at Solji. "What about you?"
"Me?" she asked pathetically.
"Solji doesn't like noisy and crowded places. If I didn't know any better, she brought some of her school works here," Jungwoo said and Solji glared at her brother.
"I will go with you guys! I have nothing better to do. Besides, I already finished all my tasks," she explained then rolled her eyes.
"Oh, yeah! I remember it now. You said you couldn't come with us because of your workload and when you heard that Jeno is coming with us, you suddenly changed your mind. Someone wants to spend time with her fiancé," Jungwoo teased and Solji's eyes widened into saucers. She wanted to shrink in embarrassment especially when she saw Jeno grinning at her.
"What the hell are you talking about? Stop making things up! And you!" she turned to Jeno. "Stop smiling! You look like a creep!"
Solji just wanted to drown herself than endure her older brother's taunting. It didn't help that Jeno was smiling while watching her get embarrassed. She walked out and left them, hearing their boisterous laughter when they successfully annoyed her.
***
Solji thought herself lucky when she found a white silk dress in her suitcase. She didn't really pay much attention to the clothes she was shoving there and was just excited by the fact that she would come to see their private island. It was sheer luck when she packed a party dress.
She settled for a transparent sandal shoes since it would be dark there and nobody would look at her feet. She put on a dark eyeshadow makeup, burgundy lipstick coated with clear gloss, and let her hair naturally fall on her back.
She brought a beige purse with all her essentials and left her room. Her brothers and fiancé were waiting downstairs, all dressed accordingly. From above the staircase, she could smell Jeno's perfume and her heart leaped in excitement.
Jeno was talking to Doyoung when the latter made him turn around, and to say that he was mesmerized was an understatement.
He watched as Solji's hand glided down the banister of the staircase, her white flowy dress following her every movement. His mouth was agape while watching her and the two brothers elbowed each other while smiling.
"Someone's in love," Jungwoo whispered but loud enough for Jeno to hear.
"Yeah, right? He's so obvious," Doyoung replied and purposely raised his voice so Jeno would know they were pertaining to him. "A mosquito might fly in your mouth, brother."
Jeno instantly shut his mouth.
"Hi!" Solji greeted her brothers first and kissed them on their cheek. Then she turned to Jeno and gave him a little pat on the shoulder.
She couldn't look at Jeno's smouldering eyes. His hair was swept back and he was wearing a pink button shirt with the first three buttons undone. She couldn't help but look at his exposed skin. Her throat went parched as she followed the pulsing veins of his neck. She realized she was staring too much so she looked away before any of her brothers would notice.
They left the villa after bidding their parents goodbye. Suho, being the protective father that he was, reminded his two sons to look after their baby sister.
"I think you should tell that to her fiancé, too" Doyoung said then glanced at Jeno.
"Don't worry, sir. I will make sure she will get home unscathed," Jeno said and Doyoung and Jungwoo chuckled and Solji rolled her eyes.
They used the small boat that Suho had rented and it took them to the island. When they arrived at the shore, the place was brightly lit with colorful lanterns and fairy lights. There were different kinds of establishments built in that island, a tavern, diner, souvenir shops, and a lot more that the tourists would enjoy.
"That's the club! Let's go!" Jungwoo pointed at the club with a wooden signboard nailed on the front. Jungwoo walked ahead excitedly and the rest followed after him.
They entered the said club. It was better than the club where Jeno and Solji first met. The place was bustling with people and music was booming within the four corners of the club. It had a bohemian theme, from the tables and chairs, the stage, and the bar counter where the bartenders were serving drinks. Instead of sophisticated-looking glasses, they use wooden glasses to serve drinks and banana leaves as plate for the snacks.
Jungwoo disappeared among the sea of people. He surely went to the dance floor and danced with strangers. So much for being an introverted social butterfly. His social battery would ran out and he would search for them later.
Doyoung, Jeno, and Solji found a booth at the corner, away from the bustling crowd and loud music.
"What do you want to drink?" Doyoung yelled.
"Jack and Coke," Jeno answered.
"A mimosa for me," Solji said.
Doyoung nodded and went to the bar counter to order their drinks. Jeno and Solji were left on the booth. They watched as the people got enthralled by the dizzying lights and upbeat music that could make you want to dance.
"It's so loud in here!" Solji yelled.
"Do you want to leave?" Jeno yelled back.
Solji shook her head with a wide grin on her face. "No! I like it!"
Jeno mirrored Solji's smile as they watched the people again. They were bobbing their heads on the beat of the music. Jungwoo was in the middle of the dance floor showing off his moves, having a dance battle with a stranger.
A few minutes later, Doyoung still hadn't come back. Solji tried to search for him but the club was too dark and there were too many people to distinguish who was who.
"I think Hyung got lost," Jeno said. "I'll search for him. Will you be okay?"
"Yes, of course. I brought my pepper spray with me."
"Just kick them on the groin right away. Don't let them speak to you." There was a hint of possessiveness on Jeno's voice. He had to be back as soon as he could. Without thinking, he kissed the top of her head before sliding his hand down to squeeze her hand before leaving her.
Solji was petrified, the butterflies in her stomach running wild. It was an unexpected gesture but it made her feel safe.
As Jeno disappeared into the sea of people, Solji prayed that nobody would dare approach her. The club was full of foreigners who were there to enjoy the island experience. She hoped nobody would bother her.
Jeno arrived at the counter and he was right, Doyoung needed help. Foreign women flocked to him, talking to him and trying to get his number. He was flailing his arm helplessly as he offered them a smile while shaking his head. He could only a understand a few words they were saying.
Jeno squeezed to try to get to Doyoung and circled his hand around the older's wrist and pulled him free. That of course, was a mistake because he drew their attention to him and seconds later, he was surrounded.
From afar, a strong gut feeling kicked into Solji and she squinted her eyes, looking for a certain man in pink button down.
It was crazy how she instantly found him without any difficulty. The problem was, she didn't like what she was seeing. Without hesitation, she left their booth after grabbing all their stuff.
She stormed into the crowd without excusing herself or even muttering apologies at every person she bumped into. She was called 'rude' and 'a bitch' but she didn't stop until she was standing in front of the group of girls harassing her fiancé.
Solji pushed past them, making the other girls stumbled and they glared at her.
"What the hell is wrong with you?" a girl with blonde hair asked when Solji pushed her away. "Who do you think you are?"
Solji's blood boiled at the question. All of the attention were turned to them now. The other girls stopped harassing Jeno and Doyoung and the two men saw the reason behind.
"I am the fiancé of the man you are harassing," Solji answered and then pulled Jeno close to her. Her possessive side jumped in and it took everything in her not to pounce on the women looking at Jeno.
"Where's the engagement ring then? Fiancé wannabe."
Solji's face instantly flushed in embarrassment but she kept her chin up. "We could be fucking right here and right now and that's still none of your goddamn business."
What she did next was unexpected.
She pulled Jeno by his collar and kissed him, wrapping her arms around his neck. She made sure that all the women there could see what she was doing. She licked his lower lip before biting it, earning a moan from Jeno. When she pulled away, all the girls disappeared.
Doyoung was speechless.
And Jungwoo...
Jungwoo dropped the bottle of beer he was holding and it shattered into shards.
"No offense sister, but that was disgusting. I didn't know you have that side of you."
"Shut up! We were supposed to enjoy our time here but I have to come and save your asses instead!" she yelled at the two. She turned to Jeno. "You! You could've pushed them away, you know? You're an engaged man! You should know better!"
She didn't let any of them speak before she stormed out of the club. Her supposed fun night was ruined and she didn't speak to any of them even though her brothers kept apologizing to her. She was brooding the entire time even when they got home, she refused to speak to anyone and her brothers were scolded.
Jeno didn't approach her.
He wasn't exactly remorseful. If anything, he was rejoicing.
***
Solji should've known that she was going to experience hell after the incident last night. Her parents didn't know about it. Yet. But her brothers were throwing her we-know-what-you-did-last-night look and she was dreading every second she spent with them. Jeno was also smiling knowingly. Solji ignored him for the rest of the night and he didn't even apologize to her. That left her upset even the next day.
To celebrate Suho and Irene's wedding anniversary, Suho rented a yacht which they used for island-hopping. They took a lot of pictures, visited shops and restaurants, bought souvenirs to take home, and a lot of fun activities that took Solji's mind away temporarily.
They also did snorkeling to which Jeno was really good at. His abs were on full display again and Solji fought the urge to look. She was still mad at him. The seafloor was really beautiful, adorned with corals of all shapes and sizes. They also saw different schools of fishes. It was breathtaking to say the least.
After the activities, they ate lunch on the yacht prepared by a head chef. They spend their afternoon on the yacht, preparing for the main event in the evening.
Solji was reading a book while sitting in a hammock when Jeno occupied the space beside her without asking. Solji sent him a glare to which he only ignored.
"Excuse me?"
Jeno looked at her, pretending to be oblivious. "Yes? You want to pass?"
"That's not what I meant. Why are you sitting beside me without my permission?"
"Do you own this hammock?"
"I don't have to own it."
"Then there's no permission needed." Jeno gave him a cute smile. It fueled her irritation but at the same time, it melted her anger. She thought she was going insane.
"Get off the hammock. Get out of my sight. You're ruining my day!"
"That's not what the girls told me at the last island we went to," Jeno said confidently. Solji closed her eyes, her little patience hanging by a thread.
"Then go there! Stay with them! Flirt with them as long as you want!" Solji tried to stand up and leave but Jeno held her wrist. It was gentle but firm, it wasn't hurting her but just enough to keep her in place. Her glare intensified but Jeno only found the situation amusing.
"Is my fiancé jealous?" Jeno asked, his voice deep and husky. Solji's heart hammered inside her chest as Jeno slowly leaned forward.
"What... What are you talking about? Get away from me!"
"Why are you pushing me away? Don't you want me anymore? Is it okay for you if the girls will have me instead?"
"Of course not!" she answered rather too quickly. It wasn't fair that Jeno was pushing her in a situation where she couldn't think straight. Or maybe, she didn't have to think at all or else her answers would all be lies. Perhaps, what she was saying now was the truth.
"I didn't know my fiancé is so possessive," Jeno whispered. He put his arms on both sides of the hammock, trapping Solji as he leaned closer and she was leaning back, trying to put as much space only to find a dead end.
Solji gulped when her back hit the fabric of the hammock, their bodies so close she could literally feel Jeno's toned mucles. She was too tempted to touch his skin, to feel the burn but she was too afraid.
"Jeno!" she hissed and tried to push his chest away but she didn't really put much force into it.
"I'm all yours to have. Just say the word," Jeno said and pressed their foreheads together. He closed his eyes contentedly.
"I can't even call you my fiancé because there's no ring," Solji blurted out. She was too intoxicated to even think because she couldn't smell Jeno's perfume. She was smelling his natural scent which was way more addicting. It's a mixture of sweet summer and fresh wood, like a personal drug that would satiate her addiction.
Jeno pulled away from her and she almost whined at the loss of contact. Slowly, Jeno planted a soft and endearing kiss on her forehead. And then he was gone. Solji regretted it.
She must've said too much.
Or perhaps, she said the right thing.
***
Evening came and Solji was fidgeting inside her room, fussing over her reflection. She was wearing a nude illusion backless dress which hugged her body in all the right places. She put her hair up, leaving a tendrils of her hair to frame her face. A matching set of sapphire earrings and necklace and she was ready to go.
But she was too nervous.
A knock on the door interrupted her thoughts. The door creaked open and Jungwoo peeked.
"Hey, ugly sister. It's time for the celebration," Jungwoo said. "The dress is stunning, but you're still ugly."
"It wouldn't kill you to admit that your sister is drop dead gorgeous."
"Okay, but only for tonight. Don't get too ahead of yourself."
"Don't worry, I wouldn't. You always keep me in check."
They laughed at each other's antics. Jungwoo offered his arm to Solji and together, they went to the area where the main event was going to take place.
It was a wide space converted into a ballroom. A crystal chandelier worth millions was hanging on the ceiling, giving the place a soft, romantic glow. There was a long table filled with dishes and desserts Solji had never seen before. Her mouth instantly watered at the sight. There were set of chairs, of course. Everything looked expensive and even though Solji was born with unimaginable amount of wealth, she couldn't imagine messing up even the table cloth.
But what caught her sight was the tall man standing next to Doyoung, wearing a royal blue three-piece suit. His hair was swept back and she could see the mole under his eye.
They waited for Suho and Irene to arrive and the celebration started.
A server approached Suho and gave him an empty glass. He raised it and another server poured red wine on it. When they're finished, they went back to their situation and Suho raised his glass.
"Tonight, we will be celebrating our wedding anniversary. It's been a tough journey but being with you makes it bearable. And now, we have three beautiful children and our family is still growing."
Jungwoo made puking noises and Doyoung elbowed him.
"Life with you may not be full of sunshine and butterflies but you are surely the rainbow after the storm. May the next years of our love remain strong. I love you, my love."
They clinked their glasses and took a sip of wine.
The celebration was intimate, much to Irene's liking. She didn't like extravagant parties. She always wanted it simple which was why Suho fell head over heels for her. Simple but straightforward, like the way she pulled Suho in for a kiss when she confessed to him when they were they were young.
After eating, they chatted for a while before some of the staff took the table and chairs away and the orchestra that Suho hired sat on the corner and started playing a slow, romantic music.
Suho and Irene occupied the dance floor. They were swaying with the slow rhythm while looking deep into each others eyes.
Jungwoo groaned. "If only I had known that there's going to be like this, I should've brought a friend with me!" he sulked.
Meanwhile, Doyoung kept glancing at Jeno. "What are you two doing? Dance! Don't waste this chance!"
"And please try not to fight while dancing, will you?" Jungwoo added.
Jeno cleared his throat first and took a brave step towards a certain beautiful lady.
"May I have this dance, miss?" he asked and offered her his hand.
"I'm going to accept it only because I'm feeling generous today."
Hand in hand, they joined Solji's parents on the dance floor. Jungwoo and Doyoung joined, too, but they were dancing hiphop in a slow and romantic music.
It was a hilarious sight but Solji was too preoccupied at the moment. Their bodies were close again. She couldn't take her mind away from Jeno's hand resting on her waist while the other holding her hand. She looked up and met his eyes. He was looking at her with so much intensity and emotions she couldn't name.
"You look stunning," Jeno complimented her and slightly squeezed her hand, sending jolts to her body.
"I always look stunning. You too. You look great."
"Thank you."
Being with Jeno was both comfortable and terrifying. Solji was playing with fire when she thought of kissing him at the moment. Her mind reeled back to what happened last night.
She didn't know she would have an outburst over a group of girls trying to lay their hands on her fiancé. She was terrified by the fact that she was being possessive. And she hated it when they pointed at their empty ring fingers.
Their engagement were mere arrangement alone and she should feel relieved. But why did she keep wanting more?
Jeno lightly tugged her hand, pulling her back to reality.
"What?"
"Let's go outside."
Solji followed without a word. The moment they stepped out, they were slapped by the cold night wind. Solji shivered and Jeno put his jacket on her shoulders.
"Are you planning to throw me out into the sea?" Solji asked. "If this is how you want our engagement to end then I will haunt you even in prison!"
Jeno chuckled at her. "Silly! Of course not! Why would I throw my fiancé away?"
Solji blushed at the word but good thing, it was dark enough to hide her flushed face.
"Then why?"
"I think you're right. We can't really call each other fiancé when there's no ring at all."
Jeno walked towards her and held her hand.
"I realized something when we were at the club last night."
"What? That you're better off without me?" Just by thinking about it hurt Solji.
Jeno shook his head then smiled.
"I realized you are someone who will fearlessly fight if you think you're right. You are someone who always needs reassurance, and I willingly give that to you."
Slowly, Jeno bent on one knee as he brought out a black velvet box from his pocket. Solji's hand flew to her mouth as her eyes widened. Jeno opened the box revealing a teardrop shaped emerald ring.
"We are practically engaged now. But, would you to me the honor of putting this ring and become my fiancé?"
Agreeing to it meant sealing their engagement. Nothing would change about their status, aside from the fact that they could claim each other now and flaunt the ring when necessary.
It was a terrifying moment for Solji. She had to choose between being officially engaged, which meant that her fate would be sealed, and being able to use the privilege of using the ring as a form of charm to cast away the people who would try to lay their hand on him.
She wanted both freedom and reassurance.
She already lost the first one but that didn't mean she would automatically choose the second.
Solji closed her eyes and searched her heart's deepest desire.
"Yes," she whispered.
"I'm sorry, I didn't catch that."
"I said, yes!"
Jeno smiled, his eyes disappearing. He inserted the ring on her finger and it fitted perfectly. Solji smiled as she looked at the emerald ring on her hand. Jeno engulfed her into a hug. How could she doubt her choices when Jeno's reaction could melt it all away?
For the first time, Solji let herself dive into uncertainty. What's meant for her won't miss her.
"I don't really mind spending my lifetime with you," Jeno whispered to her ear.
His arm circled around her waist and pulled her closer, his other hand cupped her cheek and slid down to the base of her delicate neck. They were looking into each other's eyes and Solji didn't want that moment to end. As if there was a magnetic field pulling them closer, the fluttered their eyes close as their lips pressed against each other. Solji automatically wrapped her arms around Jeno's neck, tugging his hair lightly which elicited a contented sigh from him. His arm circled around her waist moved to caress her back. It was an intimate moment between them.
The kiss was not influenced with alcohol or a rush of possessiveness.
It was a form of communication carrying all the messages they wanted to convey.
Their lips moved and Jeno bit her lower lip and sucked it lightly, causing her to open her mouth. Jeno slid his warm tongue inside her mouth and her knees buckled. She would've lost her balance if it weren't for her arms clinging around Jeno's neck. He helped her up as they shared a wet kiss. Jeno pushed her on the wall and ravaged her mouth, exploring it without thoughts of stopping.
Solji was breathless when they stopped and Jeno pressed their foreheads together, breathing heavily. Both of them were flushed after an intense make out session.
That's when she realized that their engagement was sealed with a passionate kiss.
