Chapter 67

Things ran smoothly for a few weeks after the Broadway.com Awards. They were finally getting into the swing of things with their shows. Now, it truly felt like an established show. Rehearsals were more about modifying and improving, rather than cleaning and going over mistakes.

Until something happened that changed everything for the cast.

Before a show, just as Kasey was putting on her wig, there was an announcement over the speakers. They only had about fifteen minutes until the show.

"All cast and crew, report to the stage immediately. All cast and crew, immediately."

Everyone exchanged looks as they hurried to the stage. This was rare. Kasey felt a sinking feeling growing in her stomach. This is how it had felt before the Richard Rodgers shooting happened. She feared that something similar was going on- another threat, the possibility of even more deaths.

Once everyone had gathered, Kristen Lopez stood on a small wooden box.

"I have some bad news," Kristen began. "I wanted to tell you all this before it goes out to the media and the general population. Our director, Gary Somers, is currently suspended pending investigation of sexual harassment claims made by several employees of this show."

Kasey blinked. Of all the things, that was not what she would have expected.

"I want to be extremely clear," Kristen continued. "We will not be keeping Gary on as our director even if the claims end up being disproved. The kind of publicity and implications of doing so would be severe. Furthermore, I refuse to in any way promote the idea that sexual harassment is acceptable."

"Consequently, we will be hiring a new director as soon as possible. For now, rehearsals will be run by the respective design directors, including Ryan, Stephen, Emmaline, and my husband and I. If you ever find yourself in a situation like this by any cast, crew or tech member, do not hesitate to report it to the person you are most comfortable with. I refuse to let this show be a place where sexual harassment is the norm. It is never okay to harass anyone, regardless of age or gender."

"Now that I've gotten that out of the way, head to your places," Kristen said. "Thank you for your time. Perform as you've always done. Don't let this get in the way of your extreme talent and dedication, and have a good show."

Kasey couldn't help but be a little thrown off the entire show. To think that the person who had brought Frozen together would be capable of something like sexual harassment was unthinkable. It left a strange feeling among the cast.

As much as everyone had disliked Gary, they couldn't deny that he had created an amazing, iconic show. It felt tainted, now, by someone who had done something unforgivable.

Kasey was so distracted that she sang about three lines of 'For the First Time in Forever' in her accent by mistake. She only noticed that she slipped up when Ryan tapped the tiny British flag that he'd printed out.

Immediately, she switched to an American accent, hoping it wasn't too awkward for the audience. Ryan was smiling, so she was pretty sure he wasn't angry, but she was paranoid about her accent for the rest of the show.

When she got her notes pages from the Kate Drescher, the dance captain, she wasn't surprised at all.

"Hey, Kasey, do you want to go for coffee or something?" Jess asked, peeking her head in the door. "I'm thinking way too much to go to bed."

"Sure," Kasey said. She grabbed her bag and slipped into her Toms. "Alright, we can go now."

Jess and Kasey sat in a little corner booth, Jess drinking a caramel latte, and Kasey with chai instead of her usual hot chocolate.

"What do you think about Gary?" Jess finally asked Kasey, once they'd gotten their drinks.

Kasey hesitated. "I can't say that I'm shocked, necessarily. I definitely wouldn't have thought that something like this would happen in our cast with any person, but if it were someone, I would guess that Gary would be the most likely."

"He didn't do that to you, right?"

"No, no," Kasey reassured her friend, shaking her head. "And are you okay?"

"He never did anything like that around me. I'm just praying it wasn't the younger girls," Jess said, her voice low. "I will hurt him if it was. They're too innocent. Of course, I'd never wish sexual harassment on anyone, but especially not Maura, Rebecca, Lily, and Emma."

"I was thinking the same thing."

"The news released it while we were doing the show," Jess told Kasey, glancing at her phone. "I have a lot of notifications. People are pretty intense about this."

"I would be, too. This doesn't really happen with Broadway that much. Especially in a kid's show, with kid actors. It's not right."

"I feel like we should make a statement or something. It's our responsibility as leading actors to get in front of this," Jess said after a few minutes of scrolling through her phone. "Ignoring it would just make it seem like we approve of it."

"That's a good idea," Kasey agreed. "Text Sebastian, and we can all do it."

Kasey scrolled through her photo album to find a picture that would go well with her Instagram theme. She finally decided on one of the first cast pictures that they'd taken, from before the Astor Place.

@kaseywinslow: #throwback to one of our first rehearsals of Frozen.

With the allegations made about one of Frozen's very own, I would like to emphasize the importance of trust. When this kind of thing happens, it is up to everyone else to make sure it doesn't happen again. In no way do I approve of the actions made by one of our directors. If any of you are in a situation like this, please don't hesitate to contact me.
