Chapter 57

Kasey's eye didn't improve as quickly as she wanted it to. The first night, her eye got so puffy and hurt so badly that she didn't sleep at all.

She desperately wished to be onstage with her cast members. She got antsy stuck in the loft for such long periods of time.

The plus side was that Jace came to help her move some of her things into his apartment. So she started hanging out at his apartment, too. At least there was some change in location.

Sebastian made sure that he kept Kasey in the loop about what was going on. The stage manager addressed Kasey's injury, specifically at Quentin. Nothing was being done to punish him, which Kasey was relieved about. It was an accident- he didn't deserve punishment for doing something by accident.

While Kasey wasn't allowed to do the shows, she eventually convinced Carleigh let her visit her cast members.

Everyone in the cast greeted Kasey when they saw her- most of the girls gave her hugs and the guys slapped her high-fives.

It seemed like Quentin was trying to avoid Kasey- she wasn't sure if he was just embarrassed or something else.

"Hey, it's Kasey!" someone called. Kasey turned around. It was Jackson, who was standing on the stairs pointing his phone at her.

"What're you doing?" Kasey asked.

"I'm taking over the Frozen Instagram today," Jackson explained. "We're live!"

"Oh, hey, guys!"

"If you guys have any questions for our lovely Kasey Winslow, who plays Anna, comment now so I can ask her before she decides I'm too boring," Jackson said. Kasey went to join Jackson on the stairs. They both sat on the top step.

"bettlow wants to know why you weren't in the last couple shows," Jackson read off his phone.

"There was an accident a couple days ago, and I'm not allowed to perform right now," Kasey explained. She was wearing makeup, so it probably wasn't super evident that her eye was bruised. If they looked close enough, they could probably see the redness in her actual eye, but she was pretty sure that Instagram live quality wasn't that detailed.

"Kasey's on a long break, basically," Jackson said, pouting at Kasey. "I wish I had a long break."

"You don't. It's. So. Boring," Kasey laughed. "Hopefully in a few days I'll be back on. But at least you get to hear Kaira Malsden's amazing singing as Anna, and you get to see how talented Victoria Allen is at dancing."

"That's true, Kaira is nailing every single song," Jackson agreed.

"I love both of them," Kasey said. Kaira was such a nice human, and Victoria, while she did have her faults, she was also very bright and intelligent. So Kasey didn't mind, either.

"Hey, I have a confession that only these people on live will hear," Jackson whispered. Kasey leaned closer.

"What is it?" she asked.

"I have a crush on Kaira," Jackson admitted. Kasey gasped.

"Aww, that's so cute," she exclaimed. "I can totally see it."

"You can?" Jackson asked, brightening. "Also, none of you DM her or comment about this. I don't want her to get suspicious. I kinda want to do it on my own, you know?"

"I ship it," Kasey decided. "You two would be so adorable as a couple."

"Thanks, Kasey."

"Ladies and gentlemen, this is your half-hour call," the loudspeaker announced. "You should be putting on your makeup and your mics now."

"Well, I probably should go," Jackson said. "Say bye to Kasey, guys!"

"Bye!" Kasey called, standing up. "If you guys are at the show, I'm going to be in the audience. If you see me, stop by!"

After the watching the show, Kasey's eye was starting to hurt again. She wasn't sure if it was because of the strain she was putting on it, or if some of her pain medicine was starting to wear off.

She decided to head back to the loft, since she knew Jace wouldn't be at his apartment yet.

It was harder than she thought- splitting her time between her best friend and her boyfriend.

"How's your eye?" Carleigh asked when Kasey stepped in the door.

"It hurts a little," Kasey admitted.

Carleigh set down the libretto that she'd been looking at. "Let me see," she said.

"Carleigh, it's fine," Kasey said, stepping away from Carleigh's gentle touch. "It's not as bad as it's been before."

"Alright," Carleigh said after a moment. "Is there anything you want to do tonight?"

"Can we just... not do anything? If that makes sense?" Kasey asked, sitting down on the couch and grabbing one of the fuzzy blankets that was thrown over the armrest.

"Of course."

So they sat down and rewatched Lion King, until Kasey fell asleep.
