Chapter 50

Kasey's dressing room had finally gotten painted. During one of their long rehearsal breaks, Kaira Matthews completed the Anna sketch she'd started months before.

Now that it was finished, Kasey finally accepted that she had her own dressing room. Everything had been green before, back from the era of Kaitlyn Knox in Tangled. Bit by bit, Kasey replaced pieces of the Pascal dressing room with her own touches.

On top of her mirror, she strung a series of five pictures. The first was the picture that used to hang in her Hamilton cubby- the last existing photograph of her family that was taken. The second was Kasey's exchange student pictures, taken when she first got off the plane in the United States. The third was the opening night Hamilton bows. The fourth was Kasey and Carleigh at the Tony Awards. The final picture was the Frozen press photos, when they were all in costume.

She purposefully had the lights off most of the time- she used soft lamps instead. It helped calm her down before shows. On one of the walls, she'd hung the two flags that her friends from Hamilton had given her during her citizenship ceremony.

Kasey'd decided to combine the Pascal and Anna drawings on the same wall. One quarter remained bright green, with Kaitlyn, Isabella, and Lanie's signatures. Another quarter was Kaira's drawing of Anna, set on a pink background. Kasey's signature was the only one on the wall, but she was sure that there would be other Annas before the show ended its run.

Frozen shows that week were chaotic. Sebastian went to visit his family in Michigan, since his mother was having health problems. That meant that the understudies were swapping in and out for every show that they had.

As much as Kasey loved most of the ensemble members, rehearsing endlessly with different people playing Hans started to become draining. Nicolas and Jackson were mainly the ones who went on, but some swings knew the track, too, and the stage manager was giving them an opportunity to practice the track.

It all went smoothly until Donald Peters, one of the swings who also played Hans, missed an entrance. Not just an entrance- an important one. It was the entirety of the romantic build-up between Anna and Hans.

Kasey managed to fumble through it without making it too awkward, but Don still didn't appear onstage.

Which left Kasey alone to sing 'Love is an Open Door' onstage by herself. She had no idea what was going on- she couldn't even really tell if the stage manager was in the wings or not.

So she sat on the stage, knees pulled to her chest, and sang 'Love is an Open Door' like a sad, melancholy song. It was the only thing she could think of to do.

"All my life has been a series of doors in my face..." Kasey sang, drawing patterns on the floor. She hoped that the pit would take the hint and slow down. Thankfully, at least Ryan was paying attention.

"Suddenly, I know I'm alone," she continued, her mind working over-time to come up with ways to twist the words to make them work out in her favor.

"I've been searching my whole life to find my own place... and maybe it's the party talking, or the chocolate fondue..."

"But I'm here, and I've found my place," Kasey fumbled through her next made-up line. She turned her head to rest on her knee, throwing a quick glance to the wings. She saw Jess waiting for the next song, giving her a sympathetic smile.

"It's nothing like I've ever known before..."

It was the longest time Kasey had ever spent on stage. The seconds stretched into minutes. She'd never been so stressed.

When at last the song was over, Jess finally joined Kasey onstage. Kasey breathed a sigh of relief, relaxing a little bit.

As soon as Kasey stepped offstage, Jackson was there.

"We found Don messing around underneath the stage," Jackson told her. "He's still going to be Hans, but we'll make sure that he gets where he's supposed to be."

"Thanks," Kasey said, just barely managing to keep the irritation from her voice.

"I'm sorry, Kasey," Jackson apologized.

"It's not your fault, don't worry about it," Kasey said, then headed to her dressing room.

The rest of the show went fairly smoothly, since the male ensemblists were watching Don like a hawk. The rest of the cast- Jacob, mainly- performed up to usual par.

Kasey had trouble shaking off her 'Love is an Open Door' disaster, and at times caught herself slipping on the brink of a British accent. A mistake as huge as missing an entire scene was never good, for the person who missed the scene and the people who remained onstage.

Stagedooring made up for it, however. The people there seemed enthusiastic and appreciative of Kasey's improv, instead of criticizing it, like Kasey had feared they would. She snapped a few pictures with the little girls dressed in Anna and Elsa costumes, and even had her picture taken with a little girl dressed up as Sven.

Kasey found Carleigh sitting on the couch when she got home.

"Hey, do you have an evening show?" Carleigh asked.

"No, we're done for today, why?" Kasey asked as she hung her backpack on her hook.

"The Hamilton cast was going to meet up at the Richard Rodgers, since today is the shooting anniversary," Carleigh said.

"Oh, crap, I forgot about that."

"You can stay home, they all know that you just finished a show," Carleigh said.

"No, I'll go, I want to be there," Kasey said instantly. She grabbed her jacket and followed Carleigh out the door, setting off down the street to the familiar Richard Rodgers theatre.
