Chapter 45
Their few weeks of previews went by quicker than Kasey could have ever imagined. Most of her time was spent running between the theatre, the rehearsal hall, and the loft, but when she didn't need to be anywhere, she tried to find time to hang out with Jace.
They went on movie dates together, they walked in Central Park. They even tried eating rolled ice cream together, and Kasey discovered that she actually didn't mind it. Jace was an undeniably good boyfriend.
The week leading up to opening night was crazy, as usual. Gary seemed even more on edge than before. Rehearsals weren't any fun, that was for sure.
Part of it could have been the fact that there was a bout of sickness that was making its way through the cast, crew, and pit. Kasey guessed that it was the same round of pneumonia that Jess had before.
"We're having lots of rehearsals this week, so show up prepared to clean the entire show! Music will be some days, other days, we'll do staging and choreography. If you're sick, suck it up and get to rehearsal. This rehearsals are the last chance we will have to rehearse before opening night," Gary snapped at the end of one of their previews. "I want full attendance every day, no excuses. This is your priority, got it?"
Kasey rolled her eyes at Sebastian. It was ridiculous. If Gary wanted a healthy cast, he should let people stay home, not force them to go to rehearsal.
"Be here at eight o'clock tomorrow for rehearsal! I'll be starting exactly at 8! Don't show up late, or you'll have to run it extra times!"

The next day, Kasey flopped down on the couch in the loft, finally back from rehearsal. Luckily, they didn't have a show.
"How was rehearsal?" Carleigh asked, appearing from her bedroom.
"Tiring, and Gary is not happy," Kasey said, pulling her phone out of her pocket and checking her notifications. She had the usual Instagram direct messages from fans, so she clicked open the app to reply to them.
"I'm sure it's going well," Carleigh said, sitting in the beanbag across from the couch. "I saw the show, it's definitely Broadway ready."
"I'm glad you think so."
They were silent for a few minutes as Kasey typed out replies on Instagram.
"What are you doing, Carleigh?" she asked a minute later. Her friend was also on her phone.
"Not much, I'm stalking Amber Ardolino's Instagram page," she said. "Why?"
"Just curious," Kasey replied. "Also, are you free on the 12th?"
"No, I've got huge plans," Carleigh said instantly. Kasey looked up from her phone in disappointment.
"What kind of plans?"
"Your opening night, doofus. I would never schedule anything else then. I'd be a horrible friend if I did," Carleigh rolled her eyes.
"Good, I want you to be there. I have two tickets, and I'm giving one to you and one to Jace."
"That'll be fun. I'm excited, and I know it'll be a great show," Carleigh said. "Do you want to watch something before we get ready for bed?"
"Sure."
"Newsies?"
"Obviously."

The next day, Kasey woke up with a slightly stuffy nose. She rolled out of bed to get ready for more rehearsal, praying that it was nothing. Allergies, hopefully.
"Rehearsal?" Carleigh asked.
"Yeah, I'll be gone until tonight."
"Have fun," Carleigh said.
"Thanks," Kasey said tiredly. She grabbed her bag full of her libretto, dance shoes, and show stuff before grabbing her phone from the charger. Out of habit, she double-checked to make sure that the phone wasn't Carleigh's.
Rehearsal was awful for everyone.
Gary began with drilling the 'Arendelle Waltz' into everyone's brains. He would walk around the stage while they were dancing and nitpick everything they did. He seemed to zero in on Elizabeth and Jackson, even though both of them were doing a fantastic job.
After that, he moved onto Jess's 'Let it Go' transformation, and made her do the costume change in front of everyone at least five or six times. It was useless, because Jess nailed the transformation every show.
Kasey was pretty certain she was getting a fever with three days left until opening night. She hoped that it would pass and she wouldn't have to worry about it.
"MOVING ON TO 'LOVE IS AN OPEN DOOR,'" Gary shouted.
Kasey sighed, setting down the cup of tea she had made in attempts to soothe her throat.
"Are you okay?" Sebastian asked as they walked to their spots.
"I'm getting sick, and I'm just hoping that it doesn't get any worse," Kasey said quietly.
"Alright," Sebastian said. "How about you just take it a little easier, and we can stage kiss instead of real kiss, so that no one else gets sick?"
"If you're comfortable with that. It's still contact," Kasey reminded him.
"I'll be fine, I don't really get sick that much," Sebastian reassured her.
Rehearsal seemed to last forever. All Kasey wanted to do was go home and sleep, not run around onstage singing. Even though opening night was just two days away, she knew that they'd be prepared regardless of the insane rehearsals that Gary was forcing them to do.
When at last rehearsal ended, Kasey flopped onto her bed as soon as she got home. She needed as much sleep as she could get before opening night.
