Chapter 4

Kasey sat waiting for rehearsal to start. She pulled out her phone and checked her texts.

She had a message from Carleigh, Renee, Jess, and Jace.

Renee: can I have your address?

Kasey: why?!?!

Renee: trust me kase

Kasey: I suppose... don't set my loft on fire or something

~~~~~~
Jace: I haven't been texting because we found out a couple days ago that they're closing the show. I just don't really want to talk to you right now because I know that you're in Frozen, and I'm frustrated that they're replacing Tangled with Frozen.
Kasey didn't know how to reply to that. It wasn't anyone's fault that Tangled was being replaced. The management was in charge of that. It seemed petty, to Kasey, that Jace was refusing to talk to her.
So she did something she rarely ever did- she left Jace on read.
Carleigh: apparently a big thunderstorm is supposed to come through tonight. let me know if you need me to walk back with you. I'm in the Richard Rodgers now.
Kasey: okay, what are you there for?
Carleigh: I needed to talk to Renée
Kasey: tell her hi!!
Carleigh: of course :) have fun at rehearsal
Kasey glanced outside. It was awfully dark, considering it was almost noon. There were clouds brewing on the horizon, and she could maybe pick out the distant rumble of thunder.
Jess: hey, I'm sorry about this, but for some reason the subway is shut down and my apartment is a really long way from rehearsal. Usually I would just walk, but we're supposed to get a ton of rain. If Gary asks, let him know?
Kasey: of course!
Jess: thanks so much Kasey :) have fun!!! Update me when you guys are done
Kasey sighed. So Jess wasn't going to be at rehearsal. That meant that either her understudy would sing, or that they would rehearse everything but Elsa's songs.
It would be an adventure, that was certain.
Plus, it was probably going to rain, which made the day even more unpleasant.
After about an hour of rehearsal and dancing, Kristen called them all together.
"You guys are doing an amazing job with this music. It sounds fantastic, and I am so honored that all of you guys are singing the music that I helped to write. Because of the storms, I think it's best that we end early. I don't want anyone to be caught in the storm and get sick. Have a good night! I'll be in touch in case we need to cancel rehearsal tomorrow."
Everyone breathed a relieved sigh. Kasey gathered her things and hurried out the door to the Richard Rodgers.
She quickly found Carleigh sitting in Renee's dressing room, chatting.
"Kasey Winslow!" Renee exclaimed, jumping up to hug Kasey. "I miss you so much."
"Well, what can I say?" Kasey laughed. "I miss you so much. Sometimes I really miss all of this. Especially the people."
"How are you?"
"I'm good, I'm in a workshop production right now," Kasey said. Renee grinned.
"Congratulations! Can you say which workshop?"
"Frozen Broadway," Kasey said sheepishly.
"That's fantastic, oh my goodness!" Renee said excitedly. "Ensemble?"
"No, I was cast as Anna, actually," Kasey told Renee.
"Cough, Tony award," Renee said instantly.
"There's no way. I doubt I'll even be nominated," Kasey protested.
"Honey. You're going against Spongebob the Musical. You can beat them," Renee scolded. "Plus, it's Frozen! Disney does an amazing job with Broadway. And you're Kasey. Freakin'. Winslow."
"I'm excited... But Tangled is probably going off Broadway," Kasey admitted.
Renee looked at Kasey thoughtfully. "That is quite sad. I saw it with my family and it was an amazing show. It definitely deserves more credit than it got."
"And Jace is angry that Frozen is replacing Tangled. So he won't talk to me," Kasey continued.
"I'm sorry, Kasey," Renee said sympathetically.
The loudspeaker beeped. "Attention, cast and crew. Due to inclement weather, tonight's evening performance will be canceled. All personnel should vacate the building and return home."
Renee, Carleigh and Kasey stood up.
"We have to go, like, now," Carleigh told Kasey. "We have to make it back to the apartment before it starts raining."
"Be safe. I'll text you guys later," Renee told them, giving then both a hug.
They made their way through the familiar halls of the Richard Rodgers. Kasey missed the cast. The Frozen cast was extremely eclectic and unusual. Not that the Hamilton cast hadn't been unique, but they were still figuring things out.
The instant they stepped outside, rain dumped on their heads. Kasey and Carleigh were instantly drenched. All the taxis were full and people were running from shelter to shelter.
"I heard somewhere if you walk in the rain, you don't get as soaked," Carleigh commented as they set off down the street.
"It's unpleasant though," Kasey said.
"Might as well enjoy it. Look how different NYC looks. It's so empty," Carleigh told her.
"That's true," Kasey agreed.
"And the rain is pretty, in its own way," Carleigh said, looking down at a puddle.
Thunder shook the earth and lightning lit up the sky. The rain kept falling. Kasey's hair and clothes were dripping with water. Her Toms were soaked.
Even though walking was supposed to help, both she and Carleigh started running.
It was almost fun. Every step brought up splashes of water, and it felt like they were in some kind of movie.
Finally they reached their loft. Kasey wrung out her clothes in the shower and changed into leggings and her Hamilton sweatshirt. Carleigh did the same, but she put on her sweatpants, a long sleeve gray shirt, and her lyric scarf.
"So, Jace is mad at you?"
"Yeah... It's kind of weird. It's not my fault, but he's acting like I'm the reason that Tangled is closing," Kasey said sadly.
"It's not your fault, and if he can't see that-"
And then the power went out.
