Chapter 34
Kasey never really had to deal with press when she did Hamilton. It was always the leading actors who did interviews, took pictures, and sang on various networks to promote the show. But now that she was a leading actress, she found herself in a strange situation.
Tristan Pollito, the media director, approached her and told her that she was going to sing in the 2017 Broadway's Miscast show.
"Why are you stressing so much about this?" Carleigh asked as Kasey paced throughout the loft, on her phone, looking up music. "It's just a Miscast show. They're not expecting something show-stopping, just something funny or heartfelt."
"I want to do a good job, and picking a funny song is harder than you think."
"People like it when you gender-swap, so if you pick a guy song, you could make it funny just by singing it."
"That's true."
"What if you sang 'Waving Through a Window?'" Carleigh suggested.
"Mandy already sang that, plus, it's not really right for my range," Kasey told her. Carleigh gave her a 'look', but kept scrolling through her phone.
"'Defying Gravity' might work for you. I've always wanted to hear you sing it."
Kasey shrugged. "A girl sang that, though. It's nothing new and exciting."
They were silent for a few minutes. Kasey was looking up the most popular Broadway songs in history, to see if there was something there that she could sing. 'Circle of Life' was on the list, which Kasey didn't want to sing, but then she started thinking about the other Lion King songs in the show.
"What if I sang one of the Lion King songs?" Kasey asked Carleigh.
"'Circle of Life?' Or one of the other ones?"
"I'm not sure. I want it to be funny, but at the same time, I need to be able to sing it. Range might be an issue for a lot of it."
"You definitely won't sing 'Circle of Life' or any of the weird chants. I can see you singing 'I Just Can't Wait to be King', but I'm not sure if that's what you're looking for," Carleigh said.
"What about 'Can You Feel the Love Tonight?'"
"It's not really funny, though," Carleigh reminded her.
"That's true. 'Hakuna Matata?'"
"No, that's more of a group song. You could sing Scar's song. 'Be Prepared', I think it's called? Have you heard that one?"
"I probably have, but it's not one I can think of at the top of my head. What does it sound like?" Kasey asked.
Carleigh quickly looked it up on her phone and played it.
"I like it, I think I could do it."
"I think so, too, and you could definitely make it comedic. The fact that you're singing it is funny enough. Not in a bad way, of course."
"No, I know what you mean."
~~~~~~
A few days later, Kasey gathered her things together to head to where they were hosting the Miscast show. Carleigh wasn't going because she was going out to lunch with her mom.
She decided to wear black pants, a white blouse, and her grey blazer. She wore heels, just because they went with the outfit better than any of her flats.
After telling the security that she was performing, Kasey found herself backstage, surrounded by everyone else who was singing.
Kasey knew more actors there than she thought she would. Renee was there, and so was Jonathan, and Laura Osnes.
And Jace.
The fact that Jace was there unsettled Kasey. They hadn't talked much, or at all, really, since the breakup. But since they were in the same room, it was difficult to avoid each other for too long.
"How are you?" Kasey asked Jace awkwardly. Everyone around them was deep in conversation.
"I'm fine," Jace said.
"What have you been up to?"
"I've been auditioning some, doing some masterclasses, visiting my family," Jace told her. "What about you?"
"Rehearsing, for the most part. Have you gotten any shows?"
"There's one possibility. I'm going to callbacks tomorrow."
"That's great, I'm happy for you," Kasey said. To her surprise, she wasn't lying. Jace deserved a happy career. Even though they fought about Tangled's closing, Kasey always believed that the show could have run longer.
"Listen, Kasey, I really am sorry about everything. I wasn't thinking straight. It was just hard, with everything going on, and I just lost my temper, and I-"
"It's okay, Jace, really."
Jace looked relieved. "Are you sure?"
"I'm pretty sure. We both overreacted. Maybe space was a good thing, after all," Kasey said, giving him a smile.
"Maybe it was."
"Jace Reynolds, you're up in five minutes," the stage manager called into the room. Jace turned to Kasey.
"I have to go."
"That's okay. Good luck."
"Can I text you after?" Jace asked hopefully.
Kasey didn't even hesitate before she responded. "Yeah, sure."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kasey performed about ten minutes after Jace did. The crowd was enthusiastic when she stepped onstage, for which she was grateful. She'd hoped that she would be recognized, for being in Hamilton, at least, but the applause lasted a good amount of time.
'Be Prepared' was quickly becoming one of Kasey's favorite Lion King songs, which was good, since she had to sing it in front of a lot of people.
It seemed to get laughs out of the crowd, for which she was grateful. Nothing was worse than standing onstage with a dead audience, especially in a Miscast show.
Afterwards, Kasey headed home. Downtime was getting sparse, especially with the opening night of Frozen creeping closer.
When she arrived home and had the chance to check her phone, there was a text from Jace waiting.
Jace: stunning job as always, kasey :) how have you been?
