Chapter 14
Before Kasey knew it, she was stepping into her dressing room at the Astor Place Theatre for the first time. It was surreal to have her own dressing room, and a little lonely, if she was being honest. Hers connected in a little suite to Jess's, though, which was nice. Kasey's costumes were already hung up.
"How does it feel?" Sebastian asked, popping his head in the door. "To be a Broadway star?"
"Amazing," Kasey said, sighing contentedly. "It's weird, though."
"I know what you mean. A year ago, I never expected to be here. At all. But now I get to play a villain every night!" Sebastian said.
"Your places call is in ten minutes, ladies and gentlemen."
Hearing the ten minute warning for places, even though it was a run-through rehearsal, was jarring. Kasey hadn't heard that since her last show in Hamilton. Yet another sign that she was truly going back on Broadway.
She quickly changed into her costume for 'Do You Wanna Build a Snowman' and headed toward the stage.
When she got there, the first thing she saw was the beautiful background for the icy wilderness of Arendale. It was set in place for 'Vuelie' and 'Frozen Heart'. 'Vuelie' was done offstage, with just the actor's mics turned on. Kasey could technically sing it if she wanted to, but her mic wouldn't be on.
The male ensemblists were getting ready for 'Frozen Heart'. Kasey slapped Jackson and Fitz high-fives, and then went over to where Jess, Maura, Lily, Emma, and Rebecca were standing.
"This is amazing," Lily said, wide-eyed. "The set is so pretty. I like it better in the theatre than in the rehearsal room."
"Me, too," Maura agreed. "It makes it seem real."
Kasey understood what they meant. They'd rehearsed with the set before, but the theatre setting made the show seem real. It really was going to happen. And they could now look out at the empty seats and imagine audience members in them. That was something Kasey always loved in Hamilton- she could see the wonder in someone's eyes when she looked out into the audience.
The orchestra was tuning, and Kasey could hear the pianist jokingly playing 'Do You Want to Build a Snowman' in a minor key using the organ sound effect. The result was surprisingly sinister sounding. Ryan, the orchestrator, was looking thoughtfully at his score.
"Maybe I'll include that in Hans' song," Ryan said, poking his head down into the pit orchestra. Kasey heard the pianist laugh.
The fact that something like that had happened reminded Kasey that she truly was originating a role on Broadway. What they did now, how she moved, what she messed up, what she did well, would all effect the shows in the upcoming year and maybe years in the future.
It was a little frightening.
"Alright, we're starting!" Gary shouted. He was standing on the side of the stage, just beyond the curtain.
Kasey stood in the wings watching as the ensemble stood in a circle backstage, playing a game of ninja while they sang 'Vuelie'. The audience would never know, since there was no way that they could see the ensemble. The crazy backstage antics were already starting.
After that, the ensemble scattered for 'Frozen Heart'.
Lily and Emma were jumping up and down, grinning, as 'Do You Wanna Build a Snowman' drew closer.
Since they were really just Elsa and Anna for one song, they were also in the ensemble for 'Coronation Day' as the little children. So were Maura and Rebecca, but none of their names would be listed in the program as ensemblists.
The first few notes on the piano sounded and Lily and Emma ran onstage.
Kasey, Jess, Maura, and Rebecca grinned. The two girls were extremely cute. And then Maura and Rebecca went onstage, swapping with Lily and Emma seamlessly.
Kasey slapped Jess a high-five before the parents' death scene, and then she went onstage.
She could see the techies sitting in the audience with their notes and their desk lights, taking notes on what went on. Micheline was near the front, and she waved at Kasey.

The first run-through at the Astor Place went extremely well. There were some snags in the production, but they made it through without any major stops. The cast knew the show well- Kasey knew the show was going to be amazing.
December 18 needed to get here faster.
