Chapter 12

After more weeks of rehearsal, it was time for their sitzprobe rehearsal with the orchestra. Everyone was looking forward to it- they'd only been practicing with a piano, and they were ready to hear it with the orchestra.

Sitzprobes were always one of Kasey's favorite parts of making a musical. Even though she adored Hamilton and its pit, she was excited for the more orchestral Frozen pit orchestra.

Even though meant they were going to sing through the entire show, it didn't matter. Kasey mentally prepared herself to stay for a long time. She'd brought a book with her in her canvas backpack, but she probably wouldn't have enough time to read, anyway. She was in a majority of the songs.

They were meeting up in the theatre that they were going to perform in for their pre-Broadway shows- the Astor Place Theatre. Coincidentally, it was directly across the street from the Public Theatre. Kasey recognized the streets and the landmarks. It was like she was stepping back in time. She could almost convince herself that Pippa was going to walk out of the Public.

The musicians had assembled onstage, and the actors were placed in folding chairs in a semi circle around the orchestra. There were about five principle mics and two ensemble mics. It was definitely different- Frozen's pit was much larger than Hamilton's. There were also flutes, trumpets, French horns, and more classically orchestral instruments.

"Alright, here's how this is going to go," Ryan Willson, who was the conductor and orchestrator, announced once everyone sat. "We're going to run through each song as cleanly as possible. This is mainly for the pit and the cast to get used to performing with each other. We'll get the feel for tempo and things. I know how fast the actors have been taking it in rehearsal, so we'll try to go about that speed."

"So, first up- the ensemble, for 'Frozen Heart', if you please. We're skipping 'Vuelie', since it's acapella." Ryan continued.

The ensemble had all gotten out of their chairs and assembled around the mics. Ryan held up his baton, and the song began.

Kasey had imagined what sitzprobe would be like, but she never thought it would be as amazing as it was. The music filled the theatre. She never realized how much the orchestra added to the experience- the pianist in the rehearsal room had done a good job, but a solo piano could never even compare to the sound of a full orchestra.

Before Kasey knew it, 'Frozen Heart' was over.

"Excellent. Ensemble, that sounded great. Pit, we'll have to talk about some of your intonation issues, but for now, we'll move on to 'Do You Wanna Build a Snowman.'"

Kasey, Jess, and the four young girls stood up and filed into their places. Each mic was labeled for the principles- Kasey's was in the middle of the mics, Jess's right next to her. Kasey had to lower her mic. The four girls shared one.

She could see that some of the ensemblists were recording them- for Instagram or Snapchat, probably.

"Ready, girls?" Ryan asked Lily, Emma, Maura, and Rebecca. They all nodded.

The orchestra began to play, and Emma started to sing.

The girls switched parts around, until finally Kasey got to sing her first song with the pit orchestra. The music somehow came to life with the addition of the pit. Everyone had more energy, even in the sad part of 'Do You Wanna Build a Snowman'.

After that, they moved on to 'More Than Just the Spare', which was Kasey's only solo. It had been cut out from the movie, but since the musical needed more songs and less walking around, they'd added it back in.

When she sang by herself, with the pit orchestra, it finally hit her. She was on Broadway, she was playing Anna, she was a Disney princess.

For eight-year-old Kasey, it was a dream come true. And even to twenty-four year old Kasey, it was still something she never imagined was possible.

Rehearsal just kept getting better- after that was 'Conceal, Don't Feel', one of the new songs, which was one of Jess's solos. Kasey loved both 'Conceal, Don't Feel' and 'Let it Go', but she actually liked 'Conceal, Don't Feel' better. Maybe because the song was practically made for Jess's voice, and because it would probably make the audience members cry. It was an emotional song.

Then, the entire cast (minus Reed, Dylan, and Jacob) stood up to sing 'For the First Time in Forever' and its continuation.

The reprise was added for the show- it was made as more of a transition into the coronation, and it featured the ensemble more than Kasey and Jess. The non-reprise version was taken directly from the movie.

'Coronation Day' was an extremely stately song, with intricate ensemble harmonies. Kasey didn't sing in it, mainly because she was going to be running around backstage to make it to the other side of the stage.

Then, they all got to sit down and listen to 'The Arendelle Waltz',  played by the orchestra. That was the point in the movie where Anna danced with Duke Weselton, and the choreography was done by Andy Blankenbuehler. The waltz was extremely pretty, and sometimes Kasey could just catch the melodies of 'For the First Time in Forever' and 'Do You Wanna Build a Snowman' before they were gone.

After that, Kasey and Sebastian sang 'Love is an Open Door', while making up weird handshakes and substituting the word 'sandwiches' for various other food items, like broccoli.

They got a glare from Gary, but the grins in the pit and the ensemble were worth it. There were a few people who didn't think it was funny- Jacob, of course; and Victoria, in the ensemble. Kasey wasn't surprised.

Then, Kasey and Jess sang 'Life's Too Short', yet another previously cut song.

And finally, Kasey got to sit down after that. They only had 'Sorcery' and 'Let it Go' until the first act was over.

It was a lot of singing. The addition of the pit, however, finally made the reality sink in for Kasey. Frozen was going on Broadway, and she was going to be in it.
