Roman goes to a new school
Roman sighed, looking over at Remus.
"You sure nobody will like, know? I mean, the only people who know I have a soulmate is you, Mom, and Whitney... what if the rumors that I'm soulless are already over here?" Roman muttered quickly, biting on their nails in an anxious fashion. Remus rubbed their arm.
"It's okay, Southside basically hates Westside, they usually don't talk with the other high school. Meaning, unless someone has it out for you, well, unless a group has it out for you, your fine" Remus explained, grabbing his clothes to get ready for the day. "I need to go change and take a shower, soooo, see in you a bit" Roman nodded, turning to their arm and wondering what their soulmates were doing, however, they weren't about to bug the four. They sighed, getting up and slipping on the binder that sat in the closet close to the front, then grabbed a white tee, and some black jeans, throwing on their red hoodie. They quickly ruffled their hair, before going to a mirror to fix it properly. Ever since leaving Andrew, their self image mattered more and more, they were currently on a diet, as they felt a little to chubby. Roman hummed, deciding their hair was fine, walking downstairs and greeting their mother.
"Hey hun, you hungry? We have bagels and I could always make you something if you wanted." Lily asked. Ever since Roman had broken up with Andrew, she was always much softer with Roman, plus with moving schools. Roman shook their head.
"I'm alright mom" Roman mumbled with a soft smile.
"Well okay, where's Remus? He should get down here pretty soon or you'll miss the bus, I mean, the walk to the bus stop takes a bit, you sure I can't drive you?" She worried. Roman nodded.
"I'm sure we'll be fine"
"Who'll be fine?" Remus asked, coming down the stairs with damp hair.
"You sure I can't drive you two to school?" The twos mother asked, they both nodded. "Okay okay, just get going really soon okay? Remus, there are some of the breakfast bars you like in the pantry if you want one" Remus nodded, quickly grabbing two. Roman pulled their bag into their shoulders, grabbing the house key since their mother was going to lock the house before she left for work. Lily waved bye to the twins, watching them leaving the house. Remus passed one of the bars to Roman.
"Rem" Roman muttered. "I'm not hungry" Remus glanced at them.
"You are now" Roman sighed taking the bar, opening it and taking a small bite.
"Happy?" They grumbled, mentally counting the calories as they slowly ate, Remus nodded, stopping at the bus stop. There was only one person there, they wore black jeans with chains hooked to the pockets, and purple top, and a black and purple stitch work hoodie. They had headphones on, the music quite loud as Roman could hear it from the other side of the bus stop, and they were texting. Roman perked up, noting it was the person from the ice rink, the short purple one. Roman smiled softly, now able to see the makeup the other wore, finding the person quite cute. Roman looked away, realizing they were staring. The emo esk person snickered, slightly covering their mouth, shaking their head. They looked up, noticing the twins. They narrowed their eyes, and Roman listened back into what Remus was saying.
"But no, the school said they won't be shoving me into special ed and will be giving me a test to see my skill, and if it's high enough I'll join this one other student in this excelled class." Remus rambled quickly.
"I mean, it makes sense, you are really smart, but you just need some help because of the words bouncing around." Roman agreed. "I'm sure you'll do really well" Roman smiled. Remus grinned. The bus rolled up to the stop, letting the three students get on. Remus and Roman shared a seat, the emo sitting behind them as the bus was a little crowded. Roman took a deep breath at the packed space, trying to calm themself slightly. They were never good in big crowds unless they were acting.
The packed bus slowly became in packed as kids filtered out of the bus and to the high school campus.
"Holy shit" Remus mumbled, looking at the large and grand building. Roman pulled Remus from the flow of foot traffic. Searching for what seemed like the front doors. Remus followed Roman as they went to the side of the building, which turned out to be the front, waking inside as the two didn't have a key card. They were quickly greeted by a bubbly person. Roman paused, looking at the quite faded scars across one side of their face, however, they were still adorable looking. They wondered what happened.
"Hello! Are you the new people?" They said, bouncing in place. Remus nodded. "Great! I'm Patton! I use he/him pronouns, I'll be helping you around the school for the day!" Roman nodded.
"I'm Remus, this is Roman, I use he/him, Ro uses they/them" Remus said, standing slightly in front of Roman in a protective way. Patton nodded.
"Do you have your schedules, or do we need to quickly go grab them from the office?" Patton asked, waving to the emo esk person that was on the bus with a smile. The emo waved back, continuing on with another person, it was then Roman realized this was the light blue person from the rink, and the emo was with the yellow one, also from the rink. Roman smiled lightly.
"I have to take a test, but Roman has their schedule" Remus explained, Patton nodded.
"I'm pretty sure that you'll have to go to the office then! I'll take you there then show Roman around!" Patton then walked in the direction of the office, waving goodbye to Remus as he stepped in. "So! What's your first class?" Patton asked, watching other students walk to classes. Roman quickly fumbled with their schedule, giving it to Patton. Patton giggled. "Oh my goodness! You have almost all the class Virgil has!" Patton handed the schedule back. "Virgil's really nice, I'm sure you'll be good friends too" Patton said gently. Roman nodded slightly, gripping their arm tightly. "You don't talk much huh" Patton asked gently.
"Ah, sorry, just nervous" Roman mumbled. Patton nodded.
"That's alright! Virgil doesn't talk a lot either. Speaking of which, we should head off to English! I share it with you and Virgil, so your stuck with me for a little" Patton giggled. Roman nodded, nervously fixing their bag and following after Patton.
After a long English class where Roman almost killed themself over the fact they had to introduce themself, they were heading off to a study hall, which, as promised, Virgil was in. Roman nodded to Virgil sitting in the back row. Virgil glanced at the teacher, moving next to Roman.
'Hey' Virgil said. Roman waved, not exactly knowing what Virgil said but guessing. 'You know ASL?' Roman looked over in confusion.
"I'm sorry, I don't know much of ASL" Roman said softly. Virgil nodded, grabbing paper.
That's alright, Patton didn't know any when I first met him either
Virgil passed the paper to Roman, and Roman nodded.
Are you mute? Or deaf?
Roman wrote elegantly, his letters looping around the page, they took notice that Virgil's hand writing was similar to one of their soulmates, and then Patton was also a name of one of their soulmates. Roman hummed in thought while Virgil wrote.
Selectively mute
Virgil wrote simply. Roman nodded, and Virgil turned and put his headphones back on. Roman smiled lightly, grabbing their phone and going to text Remus.
Ro- you done with the test?
Remus-yeah, no clue what my score is, their letting me just chill wherever rn tho.
Ro- okay, I met another person, his name is Virgil
Remus- I'm glad!
Roman looked up as the bell rang, and he got up, following Virgil. The two went to the cafe, where Virgil seemed to tense up. Virgil grabbed his phone unlocking it.
I eat with my soulmates, normally don't come in here.
Roman nodded.
"I'll let you spend time with them, I don't wanna intrude, I'll go find my brother" Roman said with a smile. Virgil nodded, waving. Roman walked out of the cafe, going to a small alcove they found and slumped into a chair, with their head in their hands. Today was taxing on them, and they were very over all the people they've seen today, as many looked and whispered. They were worried about the whole soulless thing, and it was stressing them out.
"Excuse me?" A voice said. Romans eyes darted up, quickly fixing their posture. "You alright?" They spoke slowly, as of to make sure the words didn't mix. Roman nodded. "Would you like to join me for lunch? Me and my friends eat outside"
"I wouldn't wish to intrude" Roman said standing up.
"Well, it's only intruding if you aren't invited" the other said. Roman nodded lightly.
"Yeah, okay sure" Roman followed the person, now realizing it was the yellow individual that Virgil had been walking with, they had the same scars as Patton, however much clearer. Was this Pattons soulmate? The other lead the two outside and to a bench table, they waved.
"Hey Jan!" Patton said with a wave. Virgil looked up, seeing Roman with Janus, confusion filled their eyes.
"Hello Patton, I brought,"
"Oh hey Roman!" Patton chirped, seeing Roman approach.
"Yes, Roman will be joining us" Janus said softly, a headache coming on from trying to suppress his lying. Patton nodded as did Virgil. Roman sat down on the side Janus sat on, smiling softly. The three started to eat, and Patton looked over to Roman who talked softly, adding only bits to the conversation.
"You have a lunch kiddo?" Patton asked.
"I had a big breakfast, I'm not super hungry" Roman said with a convincing smile. The small group nodded, leaving it be.
Roman collapsed into their seat in the bus next to Remus, who was bouncing with joy.
"I got into the excelled class!" Remus yelled with a grin. Roman laughed, giving a thumbs up, too tired from the social and physical drain from the day.
"I'm glad Rem, I knew you had a lot of smarts in that brain of yours" Roman said softly. Remus nodded. "What made it easier?"
"Well, the math section was pretty hard, I knew the stuff but the numbers and whatnot just were jumbled, then the other parts, like the science part, was really good because it was spoken! And like, I knew the answers, and I didn't have to worry about letters jumping on the page. It was really cool!" Remus gushed. Roman smiled softly, knowing that Remus was in good hands.
"I'm glad" Roman said with a grin. Remus nodded.
"Tomorrow I go to the class" Remus said softly. The bus rolled to a stop again, and Roman glanced at Virgil who tapped them. Virgil nodded their head, basically saying it's time to get off. Roman jumped up, walking off the bus with Virgil, Remus close behind.
Today was good, things were looking up for the two, things were going to be okay, maybe not perfect, nothing could get rid of the memories of what Andrew did, but that was alright. Roman knew they would survive.
