Chapter 31: Studying(Arc 4)
Gabby's POV
It has been two days since our last mission. My fever went away but my shoulder still hurt....a lot. There hasn't been any sign of those goons lately. Alex told me about her dream, or what she believed was a vision. Ever since then I couldn't help but wonder, what other powers do we have? I mean we can transform and have ice or fire powers, but was there more? We knew nothing about Demon Hounds, so there could be much more potential within us, like Alex's vision.
So today, despite everyone saying I should be in bed resting, I took a trip to Central library. I've never been there before so I went to look around. When I got there my eyes widened. It was huge! There shelves, and books, and tables, and books, and computers, and more books! I went up to the librarian.
"Excuse me, do you know where I can find a book on Demon Hounds?" I asked. She didn't reply. She just did a bit of typing, wrote something on a small piece of paper, and handed to me.
"Uh, thanks." I said. Again, no reply. I shrugged and searched around.
"Okay let's see, maybe its over here." I said. Ten minutes later, no luck.
"Alright, this way?" I said. Ten minutes later, no luck. I got a frustrated.
"Over here then right?" I said a bit angry. Fifteen minutes later, nothing. I was gritting my teeth.
"It better damn well be here then." I muttered. Fifteen minutes later, nothing. A vein almost popped out of my head."
".........DAMMIT WHERE THE HELL IS THIS BOOK?!" I yelled, flinching at the librarian shushing me. I sighed.
"Uh, you handling everything okay Gabby?" said a voice. I looked over to my right to see Edward and Alphonse coming over to me. I smiled.
"Oh hey guys." I said.
"Ares you okay? What was with the yelling?" Alphonse asked.
"Just frustrated. I can't find a certain book." I said.
"Clearly." Edward said. I glared at him and growled. He flinched and quickly apologized. I sighed.
"Whatever, what are you guys doing here?" I asked.
"Just here to study a bit about flame alchemy." Edward said.
"I see." I said.
"Anyway, maybe we can help find your book." Alphonse said.
"Its on this piece of paper." I said. Alphonse and Edward looked at it. Then their faces fell, and they looked past me, then back at me.
"Uh, good news, its on the shelf behind you. Bad news......" Alphonse said, pointing up. I turned around and looked at the tall, tall, TALL bookshelf behind me. My face fell as well.
"........are you kidding me?" I said. The Elric brothers nodded. I yelled out a naughty word that no one needs to hear, earning another shush from the librarian and stunned looks from Ed and Al. I sighed.
"How do I get up there?" I said.
"I could help." Edward said.
"Yeah sure, if I can't reach it, then a pipsqueak that shorter than me can certainly reach it." I said sarcastically. Edward glared at me.
"WHO ARE YOU CALLING PIPSQUEAK?!" he roared, earning another loud shush from the librarian. Ed flinched and looked at me.
"Anyway, I meant I could get you a ladder." he said.
"Oh, my bad. Sorry." I said. Edward mumbled to himself as he walked away, then came back with a ladder. Alphonse extended it and put it against the shelf. I thanked them and started to climb. As I climbed, the ladder felt wobbly. I looked down to see I was about half way up, and it looked pretty high up. I gulped.
"Gabby? You okay?" Alphonse called. I nodded.
"I'm fine, don't worry about it." I said. Actually I wasn't so fine. I had four core fears. The ocean, claustrophobia, the dark (which was actually my biggest), and heights. I would never admit them, but it was true. I sucked it up and kept climbing. Soon I was at the top. I searched through, then smiled when I found the book.
"Ha! Found it!" I said. I took it down, then Izaya popped his face out suddenly.
"Boo!" he said. I yelped and leaned back, causing the ladder to fall over.
"No no no no no!" I said panicked. I screamed as I fell over, letting go of the ladder as it fell as well. I thought I was a goner. Then just when I thought I was gonna die, Ulric swooped down, caught me, and got away from the ladder. As it crashed onto the ground I panted hard, a little in shock. Ulric looked at me concerned.
"You okay?" he asked. I nodded.
'Y-Y-Yeah." I stuttered. He put me down and I took deep breaths.
"Thanks." I said.
"No problem." Ulric replied. I looked up to see a laughing Izaya on top of the bookshelf. He leaped down to a smaller bookshelf, then next to us.
"Sorry about that, but I couldn't help myself." he said.
"You idiot! She's hurt as it is! You trying to kill her?!" Ulric snapped.
"Yeah your lucky she's alright." Edward snapped. Alphonse took off one of his metal hands and smacked Izaya on the head.
"What were you thinking?!" he snapped.
"Ow! Geez one incident and suddenly I'm the bad guy." Izaya said.
"Its okay guys. Its over now and I got my book. Thanks for worrying though." I said. I sat by one of the tables and read some of it. Ulric sat next to me.
"Shouldn't you be resting?" he asked.
"I'm fine Ulric, just a bit sore." I said. I flipped through the pages and my eyes widened.
"Hey listen to this. Fire foxes can sometimes have visions of the future, whether it be days or years away." I said.
"Whoa really? You mean like Alex did?" Ulric said.
"Let's see........here we go ice wolves. Ice wolves can use there ice powers when in and out of their wolf form." I said.
"So then, you can freeze stuff without being in your wolf form?" Ulric asked.
"I guess, let's see........oh wow. Its says sometimes when emotionally unstable, they can lose control, and end up freezing even entire cities!" I said. Ulric whistled.
"Damn, you've got some power." he said.
"It also says ice wolves can see the souls of other people and creatures, similar to Meister's like Crona. However their sight is much stronger, and can see more than a Meister can." I said.
"Really? But you can't seem to do that stuff now." Ulric said.
"I guess I'll need to train- hold on what's this?" I said. I read the chapter to the next chapter.
"The true power of the ice wolf and the fire fox?" I said. I quickly turned the next page, only to see all the pages to that chapter had been ripped out.
"Dammit!" I said.
"Maybe you can ask the author. Who is he?" Ulric asked. I turned it over and my eyes widened.
"Professor Stein." I said.
