Chapter 3 - The Train Ride
The days flew by and Alyssa and Serena were content. When Tom saw how much they were making, he offered them a home here for the holidays and summer. In return Alyssa would continue to make the butterbeer while she was there.
Soon September 1st came, and it was time to go to the train station. Tom gave her the tickets and they went up to their room.
"Did you pack all of your stuff?" Serena pestered her. "Yes I did. And quite frankly I'm surprised no one noticed how you can talk what with all the nagging you do." Alyssa muttered. Both rolled their eyes at each other and prepared to teleport.
Once they arrived at the platform, Serena hid in Alyssa's arms while Alyssa dragged her luggage over to the train. Thank Rivaria for my slayer strength, she thought as she lifted her heavy trunk onto the train.
Alyssa searched for a compartment until she finally reached the last compartment. Luckily no one was in it quite yet. Alyssa put the trunk on a shelf right as two ginger twins showed up.
"Mighty strong-" one said
"You are. Quite a-" the other continued.
"Heavy trunk-"
"That is" they chorused together.
She looked at them shocked. Did one of them use telepathy like Warren from Fairy Tail? A grin spread onto her face. She opened her mouth to ask them if they were from Fiore when a small meow caught her attention. She looked down to see that it was Serena.
Alyssa was confused. Serena never meowed, she said it wasn't dignifying for an exceed such as herself. Then it hit her. "Sorry, heh, I have to go now." She said awkwardly, and rushed into the compartment before they could say or ask anything.
The second she shut the door, Serena wiggled out of her arms and stood up on the seat. "Stupid. Of course they're not from Fiore. Sometimes twins can do that. Don't go telling everyone that you're from a magically hidden continent. Its hidden for a reason. We just don't know that reason." She scolded her.
They chatted a little while longer until a girl with bushy hair and dark ebony skin opened the door. All conversation between the two ceased, and Serena curled into a cat-like position almost immediately.
"Excuse me, but have you seen any toad around here lately?" The girl inquired, looking a bit suspiciously at Serena. "No sorry." Alyssa said. "Alright but the train will be arriving soon, so you might want to change into your robes. Good luck in the sorting." She quickly left, probably go ask more people about the toad.
Serena sighed. "Go and change into your robes." The dragon slayer nodded and left for the bathroom. She changed quick and hurriedly rushed back.
On the way, she saw a compartment door that was open. Her curiosity got the best of her, and Alyssa peeked in to see the bushy haired girl standing there while Harry and another ginger haired boy sat there. The compartment was a disaster.
"-haven't been fighting, have you?" Bushy girl asked. She got excited. Every dragon slayer loved a good fight, after all.
"There was a fight?" Alyssa asked excitedly. A chorus of yes's and no's came at her. She cheered. "Is there another one?" And with that, the bushy girl shoved her out.
Alyssa frowned and walked back to her compartment. "Where have you been?" Serena pounced on her the second that she entered.
"I'm sorry Rena, but there was a fight. Sadly I didn't get there in time, though." She apologized.
"Fine." The exceed reluctantly accepted the apology. She didn't bother commenting on the fight part. No matter how gentle Alyssa acted, she would never pass up a fight. It was something that Serena was never able to dissuade her from, despite her attempts.
They eventually started talking again, and soon the train stopped. Some message about leaving luggage came on, but she was too excited to hear.
"Bye," she said to her exceed as she left.
Alyssa rushed down the path towards the large man that was calling for all of the first years. Once everyone was there, he lead them to a beautiful lake, filled with life that only Alyssa could see. Up ahead lay a majestic castle, giving off an aura of mystery and adventure.
The Fiorian girl was in her own boat, and she was slightly behind, so she manipulated the water with her magic to give them a little boost. Soon she was caught back up with the group and even got to the front.
The large man leading the group reached the shore. He got out and knocked on the huge wooden doors. An old and strict looking woman opened the door almost immediately.
"The firs- years Professor McGonagall" the giant man handed them over to her. She nodded and ushered them all in, then started a speech that had probably been used for years.
"Welcome to Hogwarts," said Professor McGonagall. "The start-of-term banquet will begin shortly, but before you take your seats in the Great Hall, you will be sorted into your houses. The Sorting is a very important ceremony because, while you are here, your house will be something like your family within Hogwarts. You will have classes with the rest of your house, sleep in your house dormitory and spend free time in your house common room.
"The four houses are called Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. Each house has its own noble history and each has produced outstanding witches and wizards. While you are at Hogwarts, your triumphs will earn your house points, while any rule-breaking will lose house points. At the end of the year, the house with the most points is awarded the House Cup, a great honour. I hope each of you will be a credit to whichever house becomes yours.
"The Sorting Ceremony will take place in a few minutes in front of the rest of the school. I suggest you all smarted yourselves up as much as you can while you are waiting." Her eyes lingered for a moment on a chubby kid's cloak, which attached below his ear, and the ginger's nose, which she just noticed had a small smudge.
"I will return when we are ready for you," said Professor McGonagall. "Please wait quietly."
Almost the second she disappeared, all of the first years started discussing how they would be sorted. She heard the ginger speak of having to defeat some troll. At that, she smiled in relief. Defeating a troll compared to a demon was easy.
Out of the corner of her eyes, she spotted Draco making his way to Harry with a suspicious glint in his eyes. Sensing trouble brewing, she shoved her way to them. She made it right on time.
"I see you're still hanging out with the Weasel. I'm giving you one last chance to hang out with the purebloods." At that moment, she barged in.
"Malfoy! Leave them alone!" She said in her most authorative voice. The air seemed to be rippling with tension as they glared at each other.
"Stupid metamorphagus, chose blue hair for sad, didn't you?" He sneered. She looked at him confused. "What are you talking about? My hair is natural, what do you mean chose?"
He rolled his eyes and fake sighed. "Great. You're a blue haired frea-" Before he could even finish the last word, she had him in a headlock. "Don't speak ill of me. Or my hair. Because if you do, the consequences will be grave." She growled lowly. He whimpered, and nodded. Alyssa released him and shoved him away, a scowl planted on her usually sweet face. Not many people knew, but she had a temper that was the equivalent of an apocalypse.
Harry and the other boy with him were shocked at the scene. Both boys stared at her until some ghosts came through the wall. Everyone but Alyssa screamed and ducked. She stood tall and proud, studying them to see if she could identify any of them. None were familiar. They passed by, stopping briefly to talk to a student. But what she noticed was one ghost. It didn't go with the other ghosts, or go back the way it came.
She walked up to the lone ghost. "Hello" she said. Now that she was up close, she saw that it used to be a schoolgirl. "You can see me?" The ghost girl asked in surprise. Alyssa nodded. At that moment Professor McGonagall came back. Alyssa smiled at the ghost and apologized. "Sorry, I have to go get sorted, but maybe I can see you later." And with that, she turned and ran back into line behind Harry.
The Professor gave them a tight smile and lead them to the room where they would be sorted.
And with that, the sorting began.
