THANKS WATTPAD

'Are we going to join them?' Is Martyn's first question when we wake up in the morning. I frown, sitting up, still half asleep. 'They said it was our only option...'

'I mean... there's no going to back to Dryadalis... if Pearl's guards really believe we're part of it.'

'And Grian promised us all the money if we help.'

'And you believe him, dude? What will we do if he's lying?' I climb out of the bed I didn't expect to be sleeping in last night. 'He and Scar could leave us stranded somewhere out in the wilderness...'

'So... we need to get someone who'd support us if they do. Ren... It's a chance for adventure... we can do more than just playing music. And get money at the end.'

'Martyn... I don't like the sound of this... you don't know what we've been dragged into.'

'Who's your strongest friend? Who's most likely to be able to beat everyone up if persuasion, deceptions and the few cantrips we know don't work?'

'Doc. Though... he's not really a friend. You know how we met by accident...'

'We'd both had a few too many drinks that night... what happens in the Griffin's Head Tavern stays in the Griffin's Head Tavern.'

'But do you think he's accept?'

'He'd accept. He's been wishing for another adventure since the NHO broke up. You know he has.'

I sigh.

'Fine. We join these lunatics and beat them up if they're actually tricking us...'

A knock on the door.

'3 questions: are you awake, are you coming for breakfast, and are you joining me, Cub and Scar on the quest?' Calls Grian. I glance over at Martyn.

'One word answering all three.' He replies.

A pause.

'Yes,'

It's still an while until we're all on the road. The wagon just about fits all of us, ignoring the fact Doc will be joining us too. But Grian somehow finds a way onto the wagon roof, convincing Scar to join him to give us more space... conversation starts, and the journey across to the city doesn't, in the end, take too long. We reach the gates just as the bells chime that it's midday, slowing the wagon as a pair of half-orc guards approach.

Security.

Probably looking for us.

'We need to check your wagon. Cleo's orders.' One grunts, climbing on without waiting for position. Scar jumps off the roof and I instantly notice he's used some kind of spell to hide his appearance. Grian doesn't move, just covering his face with a scarf I didn't notice him steal.

'Is this... Because of the dragon egg, dude?'

'All fine. Why are you entering the city today?'

'To meet an old friend.' I reply honestly. Grian finally finished his disguise from the sound of him jumping off the roof.

'Excuse me, who are you? Are you smuggling in fugitives?'

'No... No...' Scar's quick to reply. 'He's... Forestman. He's a paladin who swore an oath not to show his face in public.'

The guards exchange a glance. Scar looks between them and Grian,

'Or he will die.'

'Then everything's in order. Now, no funny business... otherwise, enjoy your visit.'

'Forestman?!' Hisses Grian as we enter the city. 'Who's called Forestman?!'

'I didn't see you covering for yourself...' Scar's first off the wagon, tying up Fernando at the entrance. 'Now, who's going where? Are we all going to meet Doc or...'

'We still need more supplies. Scar...' Cub pauses for a second, but continues 'Scar, do you want to join me with that?'

'Yeah! And you three find Doc?'

'Meet back in the wagon when you're done, dudes.' I agree, then think 'How long will the illusion last?'

'An hour... We should be out the city by then.'

'Or you can claim you're Treeface and you vowed to cover your face too.' Grian shot back, jumping off after me and Martyn 'Come on. Meet you here in under an hour. We should know from the clocks going off again.'

We separate, Cub running after Scar as he dashes off. I take the lead, navigating the streets with more difficulty than I pretend. It's only when Grian asks for directions from a kind half-elf that we find the right blacksmith, entering.

'Doc? Are you here?' It's basically empty, the tiefling there just looking up from fixing something and pointing into the back of the blacksmith. I step closer. 'Doc?'

A grunt, and a green-scaled dragonborn turns, head scraping the low ceiling. Metal replaces one arm and half his face, eyes narrowed.

'Can I help you with something?'

'Yes, I'm Ren. We met before.' He doesn't accept my handshake.

'Ren. I remember. What do you need help with- put that down or pay for it!' We all turn, seeing Grian admiring a silver sword

'Yes... Uhh...' He returns the weapon quickly. 'We're on a quest and thought you might... Want to join us?'

Doc's eyes narrow further and he shuffles away.

'I lost my arm, half my face and one of my closest friends to a traitor on the last quest I did. Why would I join you?'

'Because we'll give you all the rewards from Pearl if you do.' Martyn offers before I can speak.

'And is the dragonborn thief in on this?'

'He's already offered us all the money to get us involved with it. We can give it to you.'

'I'll consider.'

'Hey, you, dragonborn... Where did you get that?'

Again, we turn to Grian, but he isn't trying to steal anything. Instead, it's just the tiefling pointing at his feather necklace.

'Tango? I- why do you... Want to know?'

'How do you know who I am? And why do you have my friend's necklace?' He steps closer, tail raised, grabbing a sword. I reach for the knife in my belt. Martyn inches towards the door.

Grian tears off his disguise.

'Because it's me. Grian. He gave it to me.'

'Why would... you know how much it meant to him. Why would he just give it to you?'

'Grian... wait, you stole the dragon egg.' Doc immediately knows, pointing at Grian with his trident. He backs away.

'He didn't take it.' I insist 'It was all a misunderstanding. He didn't want to be killed by Pearl and ran away.'

'I don't travel with criminals. It never ends well.'

'I'm not a criminal!'

'Grian, you're definitely a criminal.' Tango rebukes 'All 3 of you are.'

'Were.' I barely catch the mutter back. 'Come on. We're sorry for wasting your time. Ren, Martyn...'

'You realise how many criminals I've put to justice over the years?'

'Why would I ask you to join a quest looking for an egg we already have? Why would we go into another city when it's a lot safer just to run?!'

'So you don't have the egg?'

'No! We don't have it! We never had it! Pearl just thinks we-'

A yell.

From outside.

Then another from Cub.

'SCAR WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?!'
