Untitled Part 7

"Well, she definitely has a handle on this." Perched on top of the crook of a streetlight, Kyoko takes the last two bites of her burger before crumbling the wrapping in a fist. Held in place by her other hand, her spear rests on the thin strip of cloth covering part of her shoulder.

"You can say that again! The preprogrammed techniques are meant to ensure a certain level of adequacy when fighting wraiths, but this goes above and beyond what I had been expecting!" From his perch beside her, Kyubey flicks his tail to the right.

Far below, a streak of gold strikes out like a snake at the nearest cloaked monster. As expected of a living ribbon, it wraps around the creature, only to slice through its body like razor wire. The golden girl who wields the strange weapon flicks her wrist and the seemingly endless ribbon sweeps off the heads of several wraiths. Slowly, the pieces of the monsters disintegrate into dust as they drift down.

Kyoko eyes the telltale black glints that hit the ground in the spots where the monsters once stood. But the temptation to grab the items that the wraiths left behind only flares up briefly. From her crouch, she continues to watch the one-sided fight.

"How many of those things did she start with?" Kyoko lets go of the wrapper, which bounces off of the car crumbled against the ledge of the freeway.

"Fifteen."

Two wraiths toddle towards the girl with the ribbon drifting around her.

Kyoko whistles. "You sure she's a newbie." A fox's smirk spreads across her face.

"Since I just contracted her, I am absolutely positive." Kyubey turns his head towards Kyoko who eyes the unchanging upward turn of his closed mouth.

"You know, I can never tell when you're being sarcastic"

"It's not truly sarcasm when a fact is being stated." Below the pair, the two wraiths vanish into dust.

"Ha, sure it ain't. I know your kind don't lie or whatever, but that was a crappy misdirection."

"Did you mean distraction? Because misdirection would imply that I stated something false or wrong, which is not the case."

"Somebody help!" The cry below rips Kyoko's attention back down; but, instead of an unexpected materialization of more wraiths, the golden girl merely stands there, looking frantically around.

Another cry, definitely masculine, calls out again from one of the cars. In the distance, sirens scream into existence as sound floods its way back into the world.

Kyoko stands, shifting the spear until it is poised behind her.

"Well, I guess the miasma's gone now that everything's dead."

The chill that generally accompanies the wraiths' manipulations of the sights and sounds of reality fades from Kyoko's awareness. What now catches her attention though is the way that the golden girl runs to one of the cars, peeling open the bent door to reach the person inside. The man flops into her arms and the girl nearly drops him as she stumbles under the unexpected weight.

Kyoko looks up at the emergency vehicles that have skidded to a stop near the beginning of the sprawling wreckage. None of the emergency personal can see the golden girl past the cars; Kyoko, on the other hand...

She leaps off of her way too visible perch and lands on the ground ten feet below. Rising from her crouch, she sets off at a stroll towards the golden girl who has lowered the confused, almost unconscious, man to the ground.

"Ms. Tomoe, I know you want to help the survivors, but the paramedics are here, so you must transform back before they see you!"

Of course, Kyubey has already beaten her to the newbie, who jolts at the fairy who had practically teleported to her side.

"But-"

"A Magical Girl's secrecy from the eyes of human society is an absolute necessity. Please transform back, so I don't have to impede their sight and risk having them miss some of the trapped humans."

Not noticing Kyoko standing several feet behind her, the golden girl gasps and her costume dissipates into sparks. Beneath the light show, a torn and bloody outfit manifests.

Kyoko tries not to wince at the gash in the back of her sleeveless shirt.

Not a moment later, a policeman appears from behind a sideways car. Before him stands two girls, one who looks from him to Kyubey, her eyes clouded with confusion and another simply standing there in all her Magical Girl glory, her spear pointed to the ground as she holds it poised behind her.

"Wait, don't move him!"

The police officer rushes forward and gently but firmly moves Mami away from the man. As the officer tries to gauge the man's injuries, Mami continues to look glance at Kyubey and then back to the officer.

"Most humans can't see or hear me, so as long as you don't talk to me than he won't notice anything off."

The golden girl tenses but then gives a small nod. Her amber eyes flicker up, and Kyoko avoids twitching when the golden girl's gaze roams over her.

"You're not going to tell her about the shared telepathy." Kyoko sends out her thoughts as she stands in what should be in full view of the other girl. Those amber eyes pass over her again as the newbie looks around for more monsters crawling past the cars.

"She's had a bit of a shock, so I'm waiting for things to calm down before giving her more to process." Kyubey doesn't look at Kyoko as he communicates. "I assume that you've come to the same conclusions since you've used magic to cloak yourself."

Kyoko shrugs, knowing that Kyubey of all people could still see even if no one else can.
