Untitled Part 5
The look of horror. Oh God, Kyoko snickers as the twins silently stare at her with pleading eyes, like she wouldn't be so cruel as to force feed such corrosive awfulness down their throats.
It's just three cheeseburgers with accompanying milk shakes. The Jocks from school would just nod their heads and then ask for the chicken nugget side dish, which Kyoko orders for herself. She missed lunch for that joke of a dance competition. She deserves a treat.
The twins let out a low moan of horror.
"Relax dweebs. It's just for me." Kyoko rolls her eyes at the sighs of relief. At least that noise wasn't in unison.
Once at their table, they sit in silence; the twins now avoiding her eyes in favor of the background clamor of teens devouring the last few weeks of freedom before school drags them back. Kyoko doesn't mind the avoidance. It gives her time to look them over. Definitely not counting the patrols, this is the first outing that they've been on and the first time she's seen them relaxed 'cause this false fear of food is nothing. Even drooping like stressed out plants, they sit taller than her, which isn't a surprise since they're two grades ahead. Kyoko shouldn't be able to boss them around like this, but the fact that they were barely eking by until she showed up gives her more clout in their little trio than a newbie should have.
She takes a sip of the soda she ordered, careful not to slurp and draw their attention back to her.
They got this cute little twin thing going on, with one wearing a blue blouse with red frills and the other a red blouse with blue frills. Neither of them is wearing any make-up except for a little lip-gloss that glistens in the right light. Everything about them murmurs soft, not quite in a Princess sort of way, but not in a way that indicates that they've survived five months as Magical Girls.
The twins meet her eyes, curiosity and nervousness residing inside their stares.
"You'll be hungry again in an hour. If not, you don't have to eat this much again." Kyoko says without missing a beat.
They just...stare at her.
Kyoko leans back, arms crossed. She frowns at them when they still don't say anything.
"What." She finally snaps. "I just don't want to hear you whining every time."
Bitterness wells up at the way that they had to make this awkward. She was having fun for the first-
"Okay." Yuri mumbles before strengthening her tone. "Yeah, sounds reasonable. So, um..."
"What school are you going to be going to again?" Yuki chirps into the space of her sister's hesitation.
Small talk, not exactly Kyoko's cup of tea. "Not sure yet." There's where her parents want her to go and what they can actually afford without hurting themselves.
"Maybe you could come to ours. I mean, it would make getting together for patrols easier." Says Yuri.
"Yeah, and we could show you the best lunch spots or study together-or we could tutor you, you know." Pipes in Yuki barely remembering Kyoko's age in time.
"Um," I don't know if we could afford to... She can't say anything to ruin this, but their pretty, trendy blouses makes her arms itch against the sleeves of her second-hand hoodie.
"Yeah, maybe-"
"Excuse me ladies."
The telepathic voice touches upon her thoughts. Nearly insistent while maintaining a sense of politeness. It doesn't matter what the tone sounds like for it still causes Kyoko to tense. The twins' smiles fade, but before any of them can look around, the source of the intrusion leaps up onto their empty table.
"I'm sorry to interrupt your socializations, but your assistance, while not required, would be greatly appreciated."
Kyubey sits before them, his foxtail swishes back and forth in nervousness. He should look cute, he does with his soft white fur and little cat ears that Kyoko's scratched countless of times. It's just, they just saw him an hour ago, and Kyubey doesn't have the time for extra social visits.
"Not required my butt. What's going on?" Kyoko's already standing, quickly chugging down the rest of her drink.
"Well, wrong would imply an occurrence completely contrary to my expectations, which I don't think is the case. I have recently made a contract with a new recruit, and while her newly activated energies were expected to attract the low level wraiths already in the area, the magnetic attraction of her soul gem has proven far more powerful than anticipated."
Kyoko slams her hands down on the table edge a few inches from Kyubey.
"You idiot! Why didn't you start with 'some new girl's in trouble' and just told me that extra crap on the way there!" Kyoko looks at the twins, who are still seated with matching expressions of apprehension.
"Come on, let's go!" Kyoko steps away, tensing to sprint.
"Actually, she seems to be maintaining a level of combat and presence of mind that guarantees an 87% survival rate. I merely wanted to request that you assist her in case there are more unexpected factors."
The twins stare at Kyubey. "Wait, do you need our help or not?" Yuri asks, annoyance narrowing her eyes.
"Either the two of you or Kyoko should be suffice as a failsafe to avoid a negative and pointless outcome."
Kyubey tilts his head back to look at the twins. The tail-like object dangling from his ear grazes the table.
"Excuse me?"
Kyoko jerks, her response vanishing as she faces...the waiter who balances their three orders on a long platter.
The young man glances back and forth between the girls. "Your order?" He steps right by Kyoko to place the food down. The bright nervousness in his eyes dims when they rest where Kyubey had been before stepping back to avoid having the tray set on him. The fast-food employee drifts away, the girls' odd interactions slipping from his thoughts.
Kyoko looks back to the others. She bites the bottom of her lip before snatching her burger off of the table.
"I'll go. No sense in wasting food if it's not an emergency. Just make sure to split the nuggets, or at least bring them over tomorrow." Without another word or glance back, Kyoko whirls around, dashing out of the door before anyone can stop her.
