Untitled Part 4
Red light glows around Kyoko's foot while her heartbeat throbs in her ears. The adrenaline swallows her up, rushing through her body as she steps back just in time, only to have to weave from left to right and then further right. Her feet can never remain still, not if she wants to avoid complete ruin. A pained groan registers moments before her opponent stumbles and falls to the ground that alights in an explosion of color. Kyoko moves forward, twirling through her finishing move before finally ceasing all movements for the first time since this battle begun over a half hour ago. The small audience erupts in cheers, and the ground once again lights up, flashing with reds and blues that sharpen her smirk within the shifting dance of lights and shadows.
The rainbow-filled "Congratulations!!!" on the big screen in front of her blasts out her victory to the world. From her spot on the dance floor, her opponent only groans.
"Ha, ha, and what'd I tell you about challenging a Master." Kyoko turns her victory grin full force at the crumbled heap on the ground.
"Ugh." Yuri moans. Near the front of the slowly dispersing crowd, Yuri's sister, Yuki, shakes her head in exasperation.
"Now, what'd you say again, 'Oh great Kyoko, if you win I'll pay for lunch for the rest of my life.'"
The girl's head jerks up. "What!? I said a week, a week!" She looks frantically at her twin. "You heard me, right, Sis?"
Yuki sighs, "She's right, Kyoko. She said a week."
"Oh fine." Despite the disappointed tone, the sharp grin remains on Kyoko's face. She places her hands on her hips before looking at the standing twin.
"Of course, with the way you eat, I might as well be paying for life." grumbles the sore loser on the floor.
Kyoko barks out a laugh, her ordinarily reddish brown eyes gleaming spotlight red under the arcade lights.
"Hey, a growing girl's gotta eat."
"Growing, yeah if you want to grow sideways!"
The grin slips off Kyoko's face. Sensing the change, the other two grow quiet, even when the victor walks the short distance to Yuri. The laughs and excited chatter that permeates the arcade fade to a background buzz. The lights of the dance floor still flash though, casting an illusion over what should be a smooth walk so that it looks more like a jerking set of motions.
"Um, so-sorry, I didn't mea-" The girl twitches as the silent one looms over her. The frown ignites Yuri's desire to scramble back, but the backlash might hit worse if she attempts to flee.
"How much do you two eat?" Kyoko's voice comes out surprising low.
Yuri blinks rapidly while her sister grimaces. "Um, we...we eat like normal girls."
Kyoko snorts. "So, like pigeons."
"Um..."
"No wonder you two suck at fighting."
"What?!" The twins' voices slip into unison.
"You're acting like a bunch of school girls who just sit on your asses all day when you aren't giggling your way through the mall." Kyoko's tone whips out, barbed and sharp. "You're Magical Girls. We don't sit around. We fight, constantly. And when we're not fighting, we're running all over town looking for one." She directs her gaze at the Yuki, whose face flickers in the flashing lights. "If you're not eating to keep up with the energy your body's using, then it's draining your soul gem to do it."
Three silver rings glimmer on the hands of the three girls, only for one to be hidden when Yuki rubs it absently.
"Our soul gems are constantly being drained anyways. It's stupid to waste more of their energy on something you don't have to." As sharp as it is, Kyoko never truly raises her voice. The twins still shiver though. Their silence stretches long enough for Kyoko to sigh. She reaches down a hand to Yuri.
"Come on, let's go get something to eat."
Yuri stares wide-eyed for a moment longer before taking the outstretched hand. A rumble reaches the ears of all the girls who then pause in surprise. Yuri places her free hand on her stomach. Her nervous smile peeks through as Kyoko lets go of the now standing girl and nearly doubles over in laughter.
Yuki closes her eyes to block out the sight and grimaces. "Well, I guesssomeone agrees with you."
