Who's the freak

Some of this is from the actual show.

Mention of overdose and suicide.

The Juniors and Seniors share a hallway, and since my name starts with a Z, I'm closest to it. Oh, joy. I don't know why we vetoed using last names, but we did. So there I was- carving my chicken for dinner just MINDING MY OWN- shut up! So I was putting away my bag and I heard the jerk kid Jared talking to someone.

"Did they?" He was saying.

"No. Nobody came. That's the, that's what's funny." Evan said. He was talking to Evan.

"Jesus Christ..." Jared laughed, but it was clear he thought it wasn't funny.

"How was- what did you do for the... you had a good summer?" Evan asked Jared, trying to keep the conversation going.

"Well, my bunk dominated in capture the flag and I got to second-base-below-the-bra with this girl from Israel who's going to be in the army..." I cringed. Ugh. "So, yeah, hopefully, that answers your question." I heard his shoes start to walk away, somehow grinding the floor.

Jared was walking this way now, I could see him, but something stopped him. "Do you want to sign my cast?" Evan asked anxiously.

"Why are you asking me?" Jared asked, turning back around from trying to ditch Evan.

"Well, just, I thought, because we're friends..." Jared stopped him.

"We're family friends. That's like a whole different thing and you know it."Jerk. "Hey. Tell your mom to tell my mom I was nice to you or else my parents won't pay for my car insurance."

"I... I will."

A locked slammed with force and I heard Jared shout.

"Hey, Connor! I'm loving the new hair length. Very school shooter chic." Silence. I looked around the corner. Connor and Jared were looking at each other, Connor glaring at Jared. This can't be good. "I was kidding... It-it was a joke!"

Connor spoke deadpan, his words increasing with anger, but remaining the same tone as he spoke. "Yeah, no, it was funny. I'm laughing. Can't you tell? Am I not laughing hard enough for you?" Jared laughed nervously. I looked around the corner.

"You're such a freak." Jaren walked a little too quickly away, regret in his eyes. There was some silence until Evan laughed uncomfortably.

"What the fuck are you laughing at?" Connor snapped.

"What?" Evan looked around before he realized his mistake.

"Stop fucking laughing at me!"

"No- no I'm not." Fuck. No no no, Connor stop.

"You think I'm a freak?!" Connor yelled.

"No, I don't-"

"But I'm not the freak!"

"But I wasn't-"

"You're the fucking freak!" Connor pushed Evan down and ran toward my direction so I took off into the nearest room which was the printing room. A copier whirred by itself. Creepy. The clock said 7:51 so I still had time. Being late for math wouldn't matter anyway, I sucked at it. I wanted to go back to Evan and talk to him and apologize

I took a deep breath, my heart for pounding and ran out. It was just a crush, it was silly but I felt like turning around and running the other direction. But I didn't.

"Hey, I'm sorry about my brother I saw him push you he's a psychopath!"I never spoke to him before so I couldn't seem to weird so I asked, "Evan right?" He looked so surprised to see me it took him a second to answer, and even then he didn't. He recoiled and looked down.

"Evan?..."

"That's your name..?" I asked for no reason. I felt bad, was something wrong? Was I doing something? I knew about his anxiety, but it seemed like something worse was going on.

"Oh. Yes. Evan. It's Evan. Sorry." He was sorry?

"Why are you sorry?"

"Well, just because you said, Evan, and then I said it, you know I repeated it, which is, that is so annoying when people do that." I tried to smiled and held out my hand.

"I'm Zoe."

"Yes. No, I know." He was about to shake it but pulled it back abruptly to blow on it and wipe it on his shirt. I lowered my hand. Maybe he didn't want to. But how did he know my name?

"You know?" I saw his eyes widen in fear.

"No, no, no, just, I mean, I've seen you play guitar in jazz band. I love jazz band. I love jazz! Well, not all jazz. But definitely, like jazz band jazz. That's so weird, I'm sorry!" I gave a light laugh.

"You apologize a lot." I smiled.

"I'm sorry! I mean- you know what I mean..."

I looked at the clock. 7:54. "Okay, well, I'll see you lat-" I turned around but Evan mumbled something to me incoherently and I spun back to him.

"What?"

"What... what'd you say?" He said though I was sure he said something.

"I didn't say anything, you said something," I explained.

"Me? I... No way... José." I smiled awkwardly.

"Um, okay... José." And ran to my homeroom.

---

"You're late." Caleb Andrews said as I sat down next to him. I shot him a glance.

"What were you doing?" Mallary Kellog asked me from across us. "It's the first day too!" She had dark brown hair slight farther than her shoulders, with bright red ends, like a pink-ish Pheonix. She was pretty tall, taller than me, maybe 1 or 2 inches.

"Nothing special," I said opening my book.

"Or is it no one special?..." Caleb smirked at me. He had brown hair that was cut so it stayed up, instead of bangs, with freckles on his nose. The both of them looked kinda alike if you thought about it. I felt my ears turn red.

"Caleb, I swear to god." He raised his hands in surrender.

"Since I'm feeling nice and lazy, you will all sit at the seats you've picked now, so hope you're happy with your desk clump." My teacher said, writing the name 'Ms. Thomas' on the board.

"Sweet!" I said. "I tolerate you two!"

"Thanks," Mallary said.

"Don't mention it."

"I did though." She smirked. I sarcastically smiled.

The bell rang.

"Good luck to all," I said and left for math on down the hallway.

I started humming, along with other people, like a hallway of buzzing notes. I looked up to see Evan.

"When you're falling in a forest, and there's nobody around, do you ever really crash, or even make a sound?" I heard him sing from the doorway of Ms. Robinson's Chemistry Room.

"Did I even make a sound?
Did I even make a sound?
It's like I never made a sound.
Will I ever make a sound?..." I started to sing louder just notes behind his singing, along with others.
"On the outside, always looking in,
Will I ever be more than I've always been?
'Cause I'm tap, tap, tapping on the glass
Waving through a window-oh-oh.
I try to speak, but nobody can hear,
So I wait around for an answer to appear.
While I'm watch, watch, watching people pass.
Waving through a window-oh-oh-oh-oh.
Can anybody see,
Is anybody waving back at me?" I walked by him, but I could still hear the song.
"Is anybody waving?
Waving? Waving... Woah oh oh oh...."

---

"Hello everyone, welcome to Engineering and Conceptual Physics, I'm your teacher Mrs. Teresa. Now since this is the beginning of the year, we'll start with an easy question. What is Kinetic Energy?" Oh, I know that. But no one raised their hand. "No one? Okay um..." I saw her scan the room and everyone looked down. "You." Fuck, that's me. "What's your name?"

"Zoe... Murphy." I muttered.

"Can you answer my question?"

I sighed. Kinetic Energy is an energy that a-that a body possesses-"

"Hail Satan" Some kid whispered.

"By a virtue of being in... motion?"

"That's correct." She started to take attendance.

"Smart girl," Someone whispered from next to me. I jumped. It was Jared.

"Why are you even here?! How did I not notice you? This is not your fucking grade!" I whisper-shouted.

"Language, Murphy."

"Where are we, Hogwarts?"

"Pfft, we all wish." Jared scoffed.

"Can you answer my question?"

"Depends. Tell me why you were spying on us earlier."

"Uh... my name starts with a Z. I was just putting away my stuff and my brother started yelling, so I thought maybe I should apologize."

"Creepy." He stated. I glared at him.

"How?"

"Dunno. Okay, and if you must know, and it seems you can read, so I'd think you would notice how this is class for all four grades. It's a very small class." I turned slightly red, I could feel it, but he didn't seem to notice. I was an idiot. "So school lets out at 2:00?"

I shut my book. "Yes, you've been going here a whi-"

"Jared Kleinman?" Our teacher called.

"Here." He raised his hand and she turned away. "What were you saying?"

"Never mind."

We were taught about what we were learning(I'm really lazy I just want to get this chapter over with)until the bell rang and we were free from the rest of the day.

Connor didn't come out of school.

I waited for a while and looked around the school, but I couldn't find him, so I started home to tell mom and dad, it'll be easier in person.

So I got home and slammed shut the bright red door to the quiet house and found my dad on his computer.

"Where's mom?"

"Out." Was all he said.

"Well, uh... I can't find Connor, I haven't seen him since this morning, I was wondering if he came home by himself."

My dad looked up and shut his computer. "He didn't. This isn't good, tell your mom, I can contact the school, ask if he showed up to his classes."

"Okay..." I said. This wasn't the first time he'd run away, but somehow this time seemed different. I took out my phone.

You: Mom Connor's missing again. Thought you should know.

Mom: Jesus, okay, I can call the police, how long has he been missing?

You: Dunno, haven't seen him since this morning.

Mom: Does Dad know?

You: Yeah, he's contacting the school.

Mom: Okay. I'll be home as soon as possible.

You: Okay, see you soon.

I turned off my phone and slipped into my pocket. My dad came up to me.

"He didn't show up after lunch they said. Something must have happened." He paused. "Did you see anything?"

Yes. "No. Nothing big anyway. At least not big enough to make him run away."

"Why don't you go and check around the neighborhood, you might see him."

I walked outside. It was a nice day, but that just felt off, that just felt...not right. It was cloudy like the sky was about to burst into rain, but to me, that was nice. And it did. After about 5 minutes of walking it started drizzling. Lightly, just tapping on my skin and hair for a bit. My phone buzzed.

Dad: Check the parks, there's a chance he might be there.

The parks. The closest park, Ellison Park, was about a half-a-mile away. The rain was growing heavier, making the ground turn darker, and the windows of houses I passed shiny.

Other people were out, walking around doing errands or exercising, and for once I wish I could be as boring as that.

Welcome to Ellison Park: land of the peace.

Caution tape blocked the entrance. An ambulance drove by at an alarming rate. Things were flashing and blaring and people were murmuring like there was a baby inside the park who couldn't get woken up.

I pushed to the front of the swarm of humans.

"Um, hello?" I asked a burly police officer, "What is all of this for?... I'm looking for someone and I have sources they might be in the park." He took off his glasses.

"A kid was found here, missy. Passed out. Suspected overdose." My eyes widened.

I swallowed. "Did you get an identification?"

He shook his head. "Not yet."

I exhaled shakily. I had no reason to be scared, it wasn't Connor... was it? "Excuse me for a moment," I said and pulled out my phone.

You: A kid was found in the park. Overdose. Passed out. No identification. We need to go.

Sent to both Mom and Dad

Mom: I'm on my way. Tell dad to come as well.

I did.

Soon enough we got to the hospital.

"Has a kid came in?" "Overdose?" "Have you gotten identification?" I don't think anyone knew who was saying what.

The woman behind the desk clicked on her computer and sighed and looked up. "We did."
