The Houses

"So, you're not a Muggle-born?" Matt asked me as he watched the little wizard on his collectible card that he got out of one of the frogs.

I shook my head. Smiling

"Can you tell us about Hogwarts?"

Zander looked up from his book.

I pursed my lips, thinking "Well it's a castle where we learn about being a wizard," I began Matt nodded "And when we first get there we'll be sorted into our houses and then we'll be given schedules for our classes-"

"Wait, houses?" Zander interrupted. Closing his book

A girl about our age with pink hair and a friendly smile opened the door and poked her head in.

"Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Sorry to interrupt. Just passing by and overheard you," she said.

Before she could leave I asked, "Are you being sorted this year?"

She smiled. "Yup."

"What house do you want to be in?" I said smiling back at her.

"Gryffindor."

I nodded. "Good choice."

The girl nodded back.

"Which house do you think is the worst?" Matt asked. He looked as though he had just seen an angel.

"Er, I don't know," she said thoughtfully "But Slytherin has produced more dark magic users than any other house but I wouldn't hold that against them though, I bet they're good chaps."

Matt smiled and said "Wow."

I think Matt would have kept asking her questions just to keep her there and keep her talking but someone called to the girl.

"Sorry, have to go. Bye." She withdrew her head and closed the door as Zander gave a little wave, I said bye and Matt just sat with a dreamy smile on his face.

"You're blushing," Zander told Matt.

Matt quickly snapped out of his trance and said: "Am not!"

Zander smiled "Your face color is the same shade as a ripe tomato!"

"Oh!" Matt spluttered "I bet you're going to be sorted into Slytherin!"

"Millie's older sister is a Slytherin and she's fine!" Zander shot at him.

"She's actually kind of mean," I said.

"You're just saying that because she's your older sister!" Zander growled.

"Because she's my sister I think I should know!" I argued.

The door slid open again and a girl of about fourteen stuck her head in.

"Could you all quiet down in here?" she asked.

"Sorry," the three of us said in unison.

The girl slid the door shut, satisfied.

Zander turned to me.

"Can you tell us about each house?"

"Sure. Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. They each have values, animals, and colors.

"Gryffindors values brave, daring, nerve, and chivalry and their colors are scarlet and gold and their animal is a lion.

"Hufflepuff values hard work, dedication, patience, loyalty, and fair play and their colors are yellow and black and their animal is a badger.

"Ravenclaw values intelligence, knowledge, and wit and their colors are blue and bronze and their animal is an eagle.

"Slytherin house values ambition, cunning and resourcefulness  and their colors are green and silver and their animal is a snake."

"How do they sort them?" Matt asked.

I smiled at them. "You'll find out."

"Which house do you think you'll be put in, Millie?" Zander asked.

"Hard to say. My sister is a Slytherin but I don't think I'm really the Slytherin type," I said.

"I hope I get in Gryffindor," Matt said glancing at the door.

"What about you Zander? What house do you like the best?" I quickly said before he could tease Matt.

Zander looked thoughtful.

"I don't know," he said slowly "What do you two think?"

"Probably Ravenclaw because you're so smart," Matt said. He seemed distracted by something.

"Maybe Gryffindor," I put in.

"What about me?" Matt asked.

"Either Gryffindor or Hufflepuff," I answered and Zander nodded his agreement.

Matt smiled.

Zander looked at me carefully.

"Maybe you're going to be put into Hufflepuff," he told me "Or Gryffindor."

"Maybe."

I looked out the window. We were passing through Hogsmeade. I lived in Hogsmeade but had taken the train because my family and I had business in London. Besides, I wanted to go on the train with the other students. It's more fun in my opinion.

As we passed the small town I began to feel a little homesick, nervous, and a little anxious as I wondered what the school year would bring.
