Part 7
"Isabelle!"
Isabelle turned away from the flames which she was watching Mr. Bane put out to see Jace rushing towards her.
She fell into his hug.
"Are you okay?" he asked.
"I'm fine," she said. "I'm just so glad to see you. Have you seen Alec?"
"Mr. Bane said he saw him."
"What about Max? And Clary?"
"She's fine," Jace said. He stepped back, loosening the hug. "I haven't seen Max. Sebastian's missing too."
"We should ask around," Isabelle said. "For both of them."
Jace's mind was racing.
A thousand different thoughts filled his mind.
"Okay," he said, nodding.
They spent the next hour asking people about Max and Sebastian, circling the manor, checking on Clary who was coming in and out of consciousness.
The fire went out about half an hour in but rescue efforts continued. The ballroom had caved in, filling in the basement. Anyone who was in the basement was probably dead and anyone standing in the ballroom, where the dance floor had been, probably fell in with them.
Half of the adult Shadowhunters were digging through the rubble. The other half were attending to the students.
Eventually, a Portal was set up to return everyone to the Academy.
Jace and Isabelle did their best to dodge being ushered to the Portal but when Coach found them, there was no way getting around it.
"I should get Clary," Jace interjected.
"She's already been brought back, Herondale," Coach said. Jace resisted against the Coach's grip on his arm. He had to find Sebastian for Clary.
"Max and Sebastian," Jace said, "I'm trying to find them."
"They'll be found," Coach said. Jace was pushed through the Portal with Isabelle stumbling after him. They were let out in the dining hall. One of the lunch ladies was standing there.
"Back to your rooms," she directed.
Jace grabbed Isabelle and pulled her outside.
"I'll find Alec," he said. That's where his loyalties had to lie. "You go find Clary."
"Jace, how did this happen?" Isabelle asked. He had never seen her look so small; usually it was hard to remember that she was still a year younger than the rest of them.
"Isabelle, it'll be okay," he assured her. He put a hand on her cheek and did his best to smile. "Go to your room and look for Clary. I'll try and find your brothers."
She hugged him quickly before hurrying off.
Jace headed for the infirmary. That was where Sebastian or Max would be. If Alec was okay, he couldn't be Jace's focus.
Focus.
The infirmary was in the administration building on the first floor. It was a rather large wing because injuries weren't uncommon but were usually fixed quickly through runes.
Older Shadowhunters filled the room and rushed from bed to bed, attending to the injured.
Jace did the same, checking each familiar face.
"Max," Jace whispered. He was the third bed on the left side. Jace hurried to the boy's side. He was still breathing but it was rough and uneven. A woman was attending to him.
"Jonathan?" Jace looked up and recognized the woman.
"Mrs. Lightwood," Jace said. He bit his lower lip.
"Have you seen Isabelle? And Alec?"
"Isabelle is fine," Jace assured her. "And I've heard the same about Alec. How's Max?"
"He was found quickly. His arm was crushed," she said, her voice wavering. Jace looked at his arms. He could see multiple breaks.
"He'll be fine but--" She stopped and covered her mouth. "Anyways. Thank you for riding so quickly. I don't know what would have happened if you hadn't have come."
"Of course," Jace said.
But he didn't feel like much of hero.
..........
"Alexander."
His eyes fluttered open. He was in the spot he had been.
"You can't be found in here," Mr. Bane said.
Alec sat up, knowing his teacher was right.
He took a deep breath and his eyes focused on his surroundings. The room was brightly decorated with a yellow and navy color scheme.
"Have you--"
"Your family is fine," Mr. Bane said. "I made sure all of them were safe."
Alec looked back at him.
There was some sort of care in his eyes that Alec hadn't thought was possible for Mr. Bane possess.
"Max is in the infirmary but it's just a broken arm," Mr. Bane said. "They're painful but nothing too damaging--"
"Thank you," Alec said. "For everything."
"And your friends are fine; Sebastian is still missing but I'm sure--"
"Thank you," Alec said again, insisting that he take the words to heart.
"Yes, well," Mr. Bane snapped his fingers and the surroundings changed in an instant and Alec was back in his room, sitting on his bed.
The door flew open and Jace entered.
"Oh thank goodness," Jace breathed. He ran towards Alec and hugged him. "You're okay, right?"
Jace stepped back.
Alec was still processing the scene from Mr. Bane's room.
"I'm fine," Alec said. "Max--"
"I just saw him. He's fine. Everyone's fine. But Sebastian's missing."
"Do you know what happened?" Alec asked.
"No," Jace said. "I've been busy finding everyone."
"The place just blew up?"
"I don't know--"
"How could Sebastian just go missing--"
"Alec, I don't know!" Jace shouted. He was on his feet and pacing a circle.
Alec was silent.
"I don't know. I don't know."
..........
"Clary?"
Isabelle's voice woke Clary up from her empty sleep.
She immediately felt a pain in her shoulder.
When she open her eyes, Isabelle was standing over her.
"Did you find Sebastian?" she asked.
"Not yet," Isabelle said. "But they will."
Isabelle glanced Clary over.
"Your iratze is fading," Isabelle said. She went to her side table and pulled out a stele and began drawing on Clary's skin.
Once the burn of the rune faded, the relief was instant.
"Just get some rest okay?"
Clary nodded.
It was easy to fall asleep again.
