Curious Concerns
It was a problem but Keir couldn't stop it. Whenever dark clouds crowded the sky releasing a downpour, he thought of her. He'd usually fight the urge but the office was quiet. Jason had gone home early with a migraine so he stayed late to go over the floor plans for a warehouse that was being converted into luxury lofts. The drum of raindrops on the roof lulled his mind into tranquility and his shoulders grew tired of being hunched over the desk. So, he pulled off his glasses, sat back in the chair, and began scrolling on his phone.
It was a curiosity. He wanted to know what Katrina was up to. He wondered how Nori was, the baby he used to rock to sleep when her mom was drained from being both mom and dad during the week. He wanted to keep tabs on two of the people who used to claim a sizable portion of his heart. He was interested in Clive, who loved watching him cook and he couldn't refuse those puppy dog eyes, having to give him a piece of whatever protein he made.
But most of all he needed to see Katrina. He knew it was wrong, maybe even toxic. But that didn't stop his yearning to drink up the sight of her even if it was via her Instagram page. Sure he still had pictures of her on his phone but those were from the past. He knew how she looked back then; the image of her was tattooed in his memory, the succulent aroma of her lasered into his mind and the taste of her forever seared into his insular cortex.
He was inquisitive about the present. Did she get those locs she'd been planning to get? Was she still living in the college town they met in or did she relocate to somewhere that had more rainy days than the number of fingers she had; maybe somewhere like Seattle or a city in the Gulf Coast? Had she moved back to Texas since she and her father created a strong relationship unlike he and his dad. Did she change her relationship status since Nori was older or was she still in a tumultuous situation with her ex and his ego was still preventing her from finding someone?
As he scrolled through more pictures another question arose; was she really single or did she just refrain from posting a significant other? He contemplated the latter and even though the thought of her being in a relationship crafted a dull ache in his chest, he did want her to have love. To be in love and be loved. He had hoped he was the man who would be enriching her life was limitless adoration but that wasn't how their story played out.
He exited the app and placed his phone face down on his desk remembering the truth he had to digest three years ago. They were right for each other but the timing was wrong.
His sight settled on the exquisite replica of Big Ben she gifted him with on his birthday. He watched the gold pair of hands tick at their own speed on their journey knowing at one point they'd overlap. But Keir knew he and Katrina weren't like the hands of a clock. They had their time. Their lives pulled them in different directions and that was life. It was a hard pill he swallowed. Sometimes you fall in love with people who weren't meant to be permanent fixtures in your life. Their purpose was for the moment. Katrina's purpose was to help him break out of the cocoon he placed himself into and remove his fear of love again. And because of that, he was grateful. He picked up his phone again and the woman who was giving him the love he needed and it was time for him to return the affection.
What do you think it means that Keir likes to check in on Katrina's life? Is it a healthy practice?
Keir stated he wanted Katrina 'to be in love and be loved', does that convince you that he's moved on?
