Chapter 9: Fight for me

After a couple of weeks, the leaves were turning golden signalling winter was near. Robin was fully healed by then, and Snow grateful, as now they could finally start preparing for the rebellion against Queen Helen, the person who wanted her dead.

Stepping out of her tent, she found William and Kai talking to a hooded figure. Curious she wandered over to them. The Hooded figure removed the hood, revealing a grey head with braids dripping over the shoulder. The woman carried a cane in one hand and a basket in the other. Lines creased on her forehead when she looked at Snow approaching her, but her eyes shone with youth. Her lips curled a smile.

" So it is true, the princess has formed a rebellion." Snow frowned.

"How did you know that?" She said alarmed. William and Kai chuckled.

"The Enchantress here has a way of knowing things," William explained.  The enchantress smiled. "Indeed I do, now where is Robin? I'm here for my herbs, after all, he doesn't need them anymore." Snow raised a brow. Kai answered her saying:

"He is in his tent."The Enchantress dipped her head in thanks, before walking over to Robin's tent.

"Amazing."Snow said. "So she knows everything?" Snow asked, sitting down on the log, near the fire pit. William and Kai shook their heads.

'She may know some stuff, but she doesn't know everything." Kai explained.

"I thought she was a myth."

"Nah, she's real. Just not everything you know about her is real. " Snow nodded

'So I guess she won't be cooking some potion in a creepy castle then. William laughed while getting up to leave.

"No, she lives in a tiny cottage up the river. The only potion she'll be making is medicine." Once he left, Kai leaned closer.

"But don't let that fool you, that woman does have magic. Maybe not as powerful as a spell, but just enough for me to stay on her good side." From her spot, Snow watched The Enchantress converse with Robin. While she had no idea what they were talking about, she could tell that it was making Robin uncomfortable as his face went red for a bit. When he looked at her, she smiled and waved, only for Robin to ignore her completely. Robin and the old lady shook hands before the enchantress came over to her.

"I wish I could stay longer, but it was nice meeting you, Snow. "

"The pleasure is all mine.' Snow replied. The enchantress shook her hand.

"I can tell you are going to have such an intriguing  future."

"Uh thank you?" Kai and Snow watched the Enchantress disappear into the forest. She turned to Kai. "What on Earth did she mean by that?" Kai shrugged.

"I have no idea. "

"No idea what?" said a voice. Snow turned around to face Robin.

"Ah, nothing important," she assured him. " Are you ready to plan this rebellion?" Robin nodded.

" I know a place where we might gather some more for the cause." Snow clasped her hands.

"Where is that?"

"The Creek Tavern."

Now the Creek Tavern is a place commonly known by thieves and other outcasts who despise the King and Queen. A perfect nest to breed a rebellion.  Located in the center of the town, the group decided to go at night. Under the protection of darkness, they slipped past stationed guards and entered the tavern.

The smell of old cigar and alcohol tickled Snow's nose. Somewhere in this poorly lit tavern, glass shattered. Boots scruffled and men growled.

"What did ya say about me girl?" Said one of them. With the help of candlelight, Snow could see the silhouette of a tall, buffed man who had his arm locked around who Snow suspected as the Barkeeper due to his apron flailing." Snow turned to Robin, frowning.

"You have got to be kidding me. These are the people who we are going to trust?"

"Trust me." Robin said.  Snow turned back to the fight, wishing she was not here to see this.

"I said nothing, I swear!" Cried the poor Barkeeper.

"Oh yeah? Well, I'll get  you somethin' to swear by." Before the man could inflict more pain, Robin spoke up.

"Is that my old friend Mike? You look like you haven't changed a bit. Still beating up the spineless it seems" The crowd broke away, allowing Robin and his crew in.  Mike loosened his grip, allowing the barkeep free. He turned to face Robin who now was sitting on the counter with a cup in his hand. Mike glared at him with his good eye.

"What do you want, Miller?"Snow eyes widdened in surprise when Mikke didn't say Robin's name. She turned to William for an answer but the red-haired man quieted her. She returned to the scene and noticed a slight glint when Robin grinned.

"What you want, of course."

"Well you're not having it," he started, clutching the pouch. " I found the treasure first." Robin rolled his eyes and sighed.

"Oh Mike, you don't want gold, trust me."

"Then what do I want then since you are so smart."

"You stole that treasure to sell it so that you could buy some weapons to kill the man that cost your eye, the king."  The room went silent, every eye focused on Mike who face's paled.

Snow turned to William beside her. "How did he do that?"

"Robin is a master manipulator, now quiet." Robin continued.

"Now I bet each every one of you would love to see the king and queen dead." The crowd nodded.

"They make our lives miserable." Shouted one. The rest murmured in agreement.

"Well, I am raising a rebellion to do just that. By doing this, England will be a fair nation as it was once before."  The crowd cheered.

"And to do so, I will put a rightful ruler on the throne." Robin beckoned Snow over to present her to the crowd. I present you, your rightful queen, Queen Snow."  An exclamation of surprise rose. The crowd murmured. Uncertain glances flickered across the room." So are you with me?" Mike spoke up.

"No." He said flatly. Robin frowned.

"Why not?"

"Don't you know who she is?"  Said the Barkeeper. Robin turned to face him. "That girl is Princess Amanda. What does she know about ruling fairly when she is kin to the man who tortures us? She will be no different." Anger boiled in Snow's veins.

"Now you listen to me-" William grabbed her shoulder.

"Snow..."  He warned her. She shrugged him off. Snow climbed on top of the counter and stared at the crowd.

"While your points are valid, I did grow up in a sheltered lifestyle in the castle, and I am related to King John, but that man killed my father The true king who actually cared for this kingdom. I may be young,  but after what I have seen here, the amount of torture, pain and ruin the king and queen have brought to England, I have brought it upon myself to make sure that it will never happen again." She said. She took a deep breath before speaking again. "I am not asking you to trust me,  all I am asking is that you join this quest for vengeance, for peace, for a better life, a better England. So who is with me?" The crowd was silent for a moment, but one by one everyone but Mike raised their hand. Snow smiled, quite pleased with herself. she jumped down.  Robin turned to Mike.

"You sure you don't want to join us?" Mike shook his head.

"No. I won't join you, neither will my men." Robin scowled.

"That's almost half of the men here."

"I don't care, that's your problem," Mike said. Snow scoffed.

"Surely there is a way we can compromise." Mike glanced at her.

"Perhaps. I'll join as long as I can have her." He said pointing at Snow. Her cheeks burned.

"What?" She turned to Robin and gave him a pleading look.  Mike's men snickered.

"Oh, you don't want her," Robin said quickly.

"The deal is the deal, Robin, deal with it." Snow's heart raced faster the longer Robin thought about it. Just before she opened her mouth to accept. Robin said:

"How about an archery contest?" Robin suggested. if I win you have let your men join, including you, if you win you get to opt-out."

"And the girl?" Mike said looking at Snow. She squirmed under his gaze. Robin glanced at her.

"You can have her. " Mike scoffed.

"Everyone knows you're the best archer in England, no it will be a pin competition. " Robin's smile faltered. Snow's heart sank.

"What's the matter, Miller? Don't want to fight for your girl?" Robin's face darkened.

"She's not my girl. He corrected him.

"Well, then there is no need for the contest then." The buffed man said, reaching for Snow's arm. Robin cut in front of her, blocking him.

"Deal. Let's get this over with." He muttered. Mike chuckled.

"Still a lady's man it seems.' He turned to the barkeep and barked at him.

"Clear us a table will ya?" The barkeep jumped like a rat and scampered off to clear a table and put it in the center of the room.

"Let's settle this once in for all, yeah?" Mike said, cracking his fingers. The two men sat at opposite ends and linked their fingers in the middle while resting their elbows on the table. Side by side, Snow saw Robin's arm to look quite childish in comparison to Mike's, Diminishing her hope even further. The barkeep came between them and counted down.

"One..."

"Two..."

Three."  The men growled as they fought, pressing each other's wrists hoping to pin it to the table. Both men's faces redded in colour with beads of sweat sliding down from their forehead. Robin was struggling, however. He put up a fight to straighten his hand but no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't. Come on, come on! She silently wished as the rest of the men roared their cheers. Robin's hand sank lower and lower before Mike slammed it on the table. Mike and his men cheered while Snow felt like she died inside. She couldn't bring herself to look at Robin in eyes.  She felt a comforting squeeze from William and looked up at him to only to see sympathy.

Once the cheering stopped. Mike stook out his hand.

"Good game, Miller." He said. "So where do we start?"  Robin looked at him in confusion.

"But I lost."

"Yes, but you fought, and that is all I expect of you, Robin."Snow approached him.

"It was a test?" She exclaimed with relief.

"Yes, you proved that you are willing to do this, even if you lose. Something I find admirable" Robin took Mike's hand and shook it.

"Thanks, Mike, it means a lot." Mike nodded. At that Robin mentioned them to huddle around as they came up with a plan. They argued sure, but after spending an hour, they all left the tavern with burning hearts and shining eyes.

As they rode home, the sun was rising through the trees. Snow brought her stallion closer to Robin as she called out to him.

"I never got a chance to thank you."

"Your welcome, though I don't think I helped much."

"You didn't have to, yet you did it, and I am grateful." Snow smiled. "By the way, I noticed that Mike called you Miller, Robin isn't your real name?" Robin's shoulders tensed.

"Jon is going too far ahead, I better catch up to him," Robin said. Before Snow could respond, Robin sent his horse running. Startled, Snow came to a stop as she watched the man run away from her.

"Did he just...?" A loud sigh came from William who trotted beside her.

"Ignore him, Miss Snow, he often does that when he doesn't want to talk, you'll have to forgive him." Snow scoffed and tightened the reins.

"I'll forgive him once he gives me a proper apology!" She said hotly.

Back in her tent, Snow curled up under her blanket. Robin allowed everyone to sleep in for the day, something Snow was grateful for. They had accomplished so much, yet so little in comparison to what laid before them. There was a lot to worry about when it came to starting a rebellion, but if there was anything Snow learned from her father was that if she spent all of her time worrying, she wouldn't get anything done. It is better to take action and deal with the bad things when they arrive, instead of preparing for a war that may not happen.
