Chapter 4: Discovered

The next morning, Snow wandered into the main room to see the little boy named Jon still there, while everyone else was gone.

"Where is everyone?" She asked him.  Jon answered.

"They went to the city."

"Why leave us behind?"

"They are looking for Robin's old freind Hector. They will be back soon." Sure enoough, an hour later, Robin and the rest, returned with Hector. Hector was an lanky, young man. When he saw her he whistled.

"So this is the beauty who has the famous jewels you were talking about?" Snow frowned.

"This beauty also knows her way around a sword, so watch what you say." Hector lifted his palms up.

"Of course!"

Robin turned to her. "Hector is a friend of mine, someone who has a large carriage. He has allowed us to ride in them so no one won't suspect us and take us to the port." Robin explained. Snow nodded. "Very well, lets go then."

They boarded the carriage and with Hector as the driver, they rolled out from the abandoned farm towards the city.

The city was noisy. Cattle were bleating, carriages were rattling and people were prattling. The air was stuffy in the carriages especilly when they were packed with no space to breathe. Finally, the carriage came to a stop and they came out. Instantly the salty smell of the sea reached her nose and Snow took a deep breath. Ships were docked along with the port, the smell of fish was all around her. Snow glanced around, a small crowd started circling them. A group of women and children who were nothing but bones and rags. This sight forced Snow to stop. The crowd as sullen eyes with dark rings around them. For the most part, their eyes were dim and hollow until they saw Robin and their eyes lighted up in delight. One of the children ran and jumped into Robin's arms. The thief laughed and ruffled her head.

"Robinhood! You are back!"

"Of course I am back, Sue." He said. "I also have something for you and your family." He said. He took out a small pouch and showed the girl. The girl squealed in delight. She took the pouch and ran towards her mother who gave Robin a grateful smile. "Thanks to you, my family can have something to eat tonight." Snow's heart sank. They were starving. Even though Snow didn't eat anything in the past few days, she was offered an  apple and decided not to eat it. She had a choice. She always had a choice. Ever since she lived in the palace, she could eat whatever she wanted, she could have everything that came to her mind, while people here had nothing but the rags they wore. She watched by the carriage as Robin began handing more bags of money to the crowd until there was none left.

Snow finally understood, they were not thieves, people who steal for gain, they were good men, sheep in wolf clothing.  She walked over to Robin.

"Is this why you needed the jewels?" Robin smiled.

"Not the thief you thought?"

"No." She said. Snow pulled out her bag that had her jewels and stared at them. They were her mother's jewels, the last thing her mother gave her before she died and handed them to Robin.

"Here, a deal is a deal." Robin chuckled.

"Why don't you give it to one of them?" He said. "I don't need it."

Snow glanced among the happy crowd was a old man who didn't get a bag. She approached the man handing out the bag of jewels. The old man's eyes widened.

"Here, take them, you need it more than I do." She offered. The old man didn't take it, instead he pointed a bony finger.

"I know you." He said. Snow frowned.

"I beg your pardon?"  The old man raised his voice.

"You're Princess Amanda! Why should I take your money?" Snow's heart raced and her lips went dry.

"I'm not!" She said.

"You're  the lost Princess Amanda!" Then he shouted at nearby soldiers. "Here is the Princess you were looking for!" At that, the men looked at her in surprise. Snow ran over to a stunned Robin.

"Robin, get me out of here!" She said.

"Robinhood has the Princess!" Shouted one of the soldiers.

"Don't have to tell me twice." Robin said. He grabbed her wrist and the two began running with the others right behind them. As Snow ran, she noticed there was something noticeably missing.

"Where is the carriage?" She shouted. She heard Robin cursed under his breath.

" No matter what it takes, get to the forest!" He said to them. Snow felt another yank from Robin as he pulled her through the crowd. The sound of metallic boots thundered behind them.

Snow's heart's pounded in her ears as she sprinted down the busy street.

Ahead of them they came to a fork in the road.

"Split up!" He ordered them. Jon, William, Snow and Robin took the left while the rest took the right.

The four them took another left and came across a couple of horses that were being sold.

"Here, jump on! He said. At that moment, an arrow flew past them. They looked up to see soldiers firing arrows at them.

" Stop them!" Said the leader. Snow jumped onto her horse, only to nicked by an arrow. Surprised, Snow lost her balance and fell off the horse.

"Snow, over here!" Robin called out. He raced over and with an extended hand, he pulled Snow onto his horse. Robin clicked heels, sending their horse racing, leaving the soldiers to eat up their dust.

Realizing the soldiers were far behind them, the three of them started cheering. "Did you see their faces?" Jon said. Snow laughed.  It was too close for comfort.

"I wouldn't celebrate so soon," Robin said. Snow glanced past Robin' broad shoulders and saw a line of soldiers on their own horses all holding swords.  The four slowed to a stop. Oh no.

"Robinhood," Called the leader. " hand over the princess and we will spare your life!"

What about my men?" Robin responded. Snow's heart's pounded. She couldn't go back. She was so close to escaping, to escape her.

"They will be spared as well." She hissed in his ear.

"Robin, can't send me back!" He spun around. "Why not?"

"She is going to kill me." The young archer frowned.

"Who?"

"The Queen." Robin's eyebrow rose. His face was perplexed with questions, but he ended up saying "I see." He returned to the soldiers.

"Unfortunately, I can't hand over the princess." This got surprised reactions from William and Jon.

"What are you doing, Robin?" William spoke. "Its a good deal!"  Robin glared at him.

'Then you're blind, Will. If they really wanted to do a deal, they would have dropped their weapons already."

"Very well, you made your choice. Get them!" Shouted the commander.

"Hold on!" Snow gripped Robin's waist as he snapped the reigns and spun the horse around. He brought the horse closer to William and Jon. "Will, take Jon and meet up with the others!" William nodded. Snow watched as William slowed down to allow Jon who was lagging behind to catch up to him and helped him jump from his horse onto his own.  Afterwards, As they approached another fork, they split up. She glanced over her shoulder, the majority of the soldiers were right behind them.

"What are we going to do?" Snow shouted over the yells of the angry soldiers and hooves of horses.  "Give them the chase of their lives." He said. So they did. They zigzagged across the city, jumped over ditches, ran past startled crowds, but the soldiers were still on their tail.  Suddenly, Snow felt Robin's body tensed up. She looked over his shoulder to see a tall fence loom before them. Snow noticed, he wasn't turning either to the left or the right. With one hand still holding the reins, he tilted to the side and with his free hand, he pulled her to the front.

"Robin?"

"The horse won't be able to carry both of us."She said nervously. "What, are you - what are you doing?!" "Giving you a chance to escape." He said, before jumping off. He tumbled down the hill, to the soldiers down below.

"Robin!"

"Jump!" He shouted as the soldiers surrounded him. Snow grabbed the reins and the horse leapt over the fence and landed on the other side with a heavy thud. Snow slowed the horse and went back to the fence and on the horse's back she peered over to see Robin all chained up, his face cut with bruises. He caught her eye and mouthed. "Go, find them." Snow hated to leave him, but she didn't want to join him either. She nicked the horse and she rode off into the forest.
