Chapter 9: Awkward Tutoring
*Virgils Pov*
I picked at my Alfredo, glaring up at the daemon across from me.
He twirled his fork around in the pasta and brought it to his lips. He chowed down on the pasta, almost mechanically. After a few seconds he swallowed, and gave a small smile.
"Most warming and delightful dish Ms." He told my mom. "Aw why thank you Logan! Please, call me Ann." She smiled warmly at him. He returned the smile. "Of course Ms.Ann."
I grumbled and stabbed a piece of chicken, twirling my fork some more.
"You ok Virgil?" Mom asked me. I looked up at her and nodded, sitting up from my slouch. "Yeah. Just tired." I said, taking a bite of the chicken.
"Oh. Well we can always wrap your plate and let you-" i immedielty nommed another bite of my food. "I ain't that tired!!" I said with my mouth full. I swallowed and smiled. "Sorry. But I'm not that tired for good food." I Told her.
Momma chuckled and ruffed my hair. I whined and shook my head. "Mom!! Company!!" I said, nodding to him.
She gave a small chuckle and leaned back into her seat. "So logan," She said, starting up some chit chat. "What made you start tutoring? Are you in Virgils class?" She asked him.
"Well, actually I'm a part of a tutoring club by the local community college. Although I am in high school, I have excelled in some classes where I can go to college courses for them instead of the normal high school. I take extra science and math classes at the high school so I can refresh my mind on what they're learning at their level." Logan said, twirling more food on his fork but never eating it.
"Oh wonderful!! You must be very intelligent!! I bet your parents are proud!" Mom said.
"Parents?" He asked, looking over at me. My eyes widened and I looked at mom.
"Yes your parents." She said. "Well I only have a father." Logan said. "Mother abandoned us when we were younger, and my father takes a lot of trips for work. I'm often by myself."
Nom gave a small sigh of sadness. "Well you're always welcomed here!! Any friend of Virgils is a friend of mine!" She smiled.
Momma if only you knew what you just did.
Logan gave another smile. "I'll take you up on that offer. Happily." He said, looking at me.
I squirmed in my chair. "Excuse me? Can I be excused." I asked mom.
"Of course!!" She said, taking my plate. "Go ahead and get ready for your tutoring." She said with a smile. "Let me know if you need anything." She said with a smile.
Logan nodded and stood up, taking his plate. "I'll help with the dishes while you set everything up Virgil." He said, going to the dishwasher.
I scowled and sulked back to my own room. I closed abs locked the door behind me. Maybe that would stop him? I don't know.
I ran into my room and grabbed the book. "Cmon Cmon Cmon!! Is there anything in this that could break this stupid deal?" I muttered, flipping through the book.
The words seemed to blur more and more the harder I tried to focus. It was making my head spin. I finally groaned and clammed it shut, pushing it down onto my bed and closing my eyes.
"Dammit..." I muttered, picking it back up. As much as I hated this book, I still had hope it could help me.
"Damn what?" I heard the voice from behind me. I turned around and clutched the book to my chest.
"Ok I know I didn't hear the door open!! How the hell you get in here?!" I yelled, pointing at his chest.
He raised an eyebrow and pushed my hand away. "Simple." He said, fixing his tie. "I'm connected to you. I have to protect you. Therefore, if I believe you may be in danger in a locked room, I have the power to be summoned by your side."
"And here I thought you couldn't get anymore creepy." I told him. "I am not creepy." He said, walking towards me. "I, am your tutor." He said. He held a hand behind his back and snapped his fingers. The math and science books from my class appeared on the bed.
"Wait were actually doing this?" I asked, tilting my head in confusion. "Why of course. Is that not what I told you I was here for?" He said.
"I figured that was a lie!! For, I don't know, some kind of demon thing!" I said.
"Virgil you're failing math and science. Your education is vital. I am going to tutor you to make sure that you pass your classes." He said.
"Oh my god! I'd rather just die!" I groaned, falling face first into the bed.
To say I was surprised when I was immedietly flipped over onto my back. I felt the air leave my lungs and my eyes closed instinctively, wincing my face in pain.
I felt the bed bend on both sides of me. I didn't have to open my eyes to know he was on top of me. I still opened my eyes however.
Logan was on top of me, but his human disguise was warped. His skin was almost grey it was so pale. And those eyes.
I know it's stereo typical to say this, but I always imagine most Daemons having pure black eyes. I didn't expect his eyes, although they were black, tech little bugs and glitches, much like ones that you see in the computer, decorating his eyes.
"If death is what you desired, then you should've asked for it. It would've been much easier than spending a century with a whiny, irresponsible CHILD." He hissed at me. Even his teeth had become pointed. Maybe even his ears? I couldn't tell because he had stood up.
I was shooken. A child? Whiny? Irresponsible? How...how dare he?! How dare that, that, that THING?! Act as if he knows me!!
I sat up, full of anger and even sadness. "Don't act as if you even know me, Daemon." I growled back. "You're the one who choose to protect me!! You could've easily let me get hurt! YOU chose to protect me, so you gotta live with the consequences!! So either help me like you SWORE, or FAIL!" I hissed, pointing a finger into his chest at every point I could as I stood, walking towards him, pushing him back a bit.
He simply looked down at me as I poked into his chest. I don't know where all this bravery came from, but I was gonna use it all up as quick as I could before I tried to be a hero. After I was done I turned abs grabbed the books and slung them open, crossing my legs onto the bed and propping my head into my hands.
I saw him stay there out of the corner of my eye. He eventually moved to my backpack. "Don't touch anything!" I hissed at him.
He turned and threw my backpack to the bed. "Notes." He said. "Take. Notes." He told me, walking over and sitting onto the edge of the bed.
I glared and yanked it open, Taking my notebook out and grabbing a pencil. I started to copy the book onto the notebook. I copied the examples onto the notebook as well. I turned to another page and wrote down some math examples.
Logan turned and watched over my shoulder. I soon figured out if I was messing up because I'd see his hands clench his knee. That made me finish math pretty quickly.
Science was worse. Don't get me wrong, I usually love science. But the good kinda science. Like diseases and autonomy and random facts about plants and such. Not DNA and clorphill, whatever those are.
They made us label a stupid plant cell too. Logans hand never stopped clenching. I eventually put the pencil down and groaned. "Stupid cells." I muttered.
"Am i allowed to speak, master?" I heard a mocking tone. I glared at him. "Sure. Whatever. I don't care." I said softly, handing him the notebook. "Do your demon-power glitch thing."
He took the pencil and started to sketch into the paper. "Here." He said after a minute.
I took it and looked over the paper. "You copied the drawing of the plant cell?" I asked. "How's this gonna-"
I felt a finger on my lips and finches away, feeing violated.
"Put your finger on a part of the cell." He told me. I raised an eyebrow but did as I was told. I poked the outer part of the cell.
Suddenly pencil marks were appearing under it. I flinched away and the picture moved back to normal. "Keep your finger on that part." Logan said.
I tried again. The part of the cell magnified on the paper and words appeared under. Pencil markings shifted until the cells part I pointed at was magnified like under a microphone and words under it, describing what it is and what it does.
"Ok I'll bite. This is alright." I told him. He gave a nod. "Maybe this will help your future advances of knowledge?" He asked.
"Uh sure. If you don't mind." I looked over at him.
He had shifted into his normal human form. "I never mind." He said.
I kept poking the picture and filling it out on the worksheet. I finished in about half an hour and put everything up.
"So, where do you go?" I asked. Logan turned, raising an eyebrow in question. "We'll do you have a home nearby?"
"No." He said. "I go back to my own realm or hide inside the book." He said. "You hide in it?" I asked. "It's a portal in a way. To my house at home."
"Oh..." "Why? We're you worried over me?" He asked, sitting on the chair.
"No!! I just wanted to know." He said. "I don't want anyone to think or get suspicious of you." I asked.
"So you do worry." He said. I went to retort but he held a hand up. "I shall acquire a housing apartment nearby, to ease your mind. I won't stay in it much, but if it'll ease your mind, I will do so."
I was surprised to say the least. "Uuuhhhh ok." I said. "Sounds like a plan." I said. To be honest my eyes were already dreary and I wanted to go to bed badly.
"I do have something for you, if it'll help." Logan speaks up.
"Hmm?" I groan back.
"I understand that you can't bring the book with you often, as it may alarm others or even bring other daemons here."
"WAIT WHA-"
"So! I have thought of a plan. I can give you another object for me to tether myself to, so, as long as you have it on you, I will know where you are always and always able to be by your side." He said.
Oh my gods other daemons could know where I am? What if they hurt my mom?! What if they try to invade the world!?!?
"Don't worry. I have blocked the signal for now, however I can't block it forever." He reassured me. "Just spend the night picking an object and I shall enchant it tomorrow so I may connect to it. For now, your heart rates slowing down and your brains going into rem. I'm going to 'go into the computer' for the night" He told me.
"...do you have a plan for everything?" I asked him.
"Of course. I have a neck tie." He said, straightening it again.
I looked over the guy again. Tall, pale, so logical and even plain to an extent. This guy was going to protect me. This daemon.
I'm too tired for this. I simply nodded and fell back onto the bed, passing out quickly.
*Logans Pov*
Hoenstly it was way too easy to ease him into sleep. Slowly wedging and burning up his brain until it needs rest, the human mind is so...so stretchy.
I turned on the chair and put the laptop in front of me. I changed my finger into a HP drive? To plug into the computer.
I sat back into the chair and allowed the knowledge in this machine to flow through my body for the night. I'd "find" a place to dwell tomorrow. For now, let the poor human rest while I gain more knowledge of this world.
