The Mysterious Crime.
The next morning it seemed like what happened last night was merely a wicked dream, an awful nightmare that I could escape from by waking up, dismissing the terrible visions into the very back of my mind. Though I knew that it wasn't just all in my head, it wasn't just another nightmare that has plagued my sleep for many, many years. It was real, and all of the bitter memories from yesterday were what really happened.
When I did wake up I wouldn't be able to just move on, and forget about it. I wouldn't be able to deny, and run from the events that occurred but a few hours ago.
Shifting underneath the covers I awoke to the sound of someone's indistinct, and suppressed sobs.
When I cracked open my glossy sky hues I saw Mey-Rin weeping into her white apron as she laid out my fresh clothes for the day.
Immediately I jolted up, a look of worry, and confusion webbing around my features.
"Mey-Rin, what's wrong?"
"Oh, I'm so terribly sorry, Lady Elsbeth! I-I didn't know that you were afraid of fire! When Sebastian told me last night once he had left your room I felt so awful about what I did. I'm so, so sorry!" The plum haired maid wailed out in between fits of tears, her nose dripping with snot.
I momentarily glanced over at the fireplace, noticing that the rug which was near it was covered with gray soot, the faint stench of smoke still lingering in the air.
Shaking the thoughts of last night out of my mind I got out from underneath the mound of blankets, and strolled over to the housemaid, offering her a handkerchief.
She dabbed her puffy red eyes, and sniffled, still fighting back the stinging water which was collecting in her tear-ducts.
"Its okay, really. Its been so long since the incident which made me be afraid of fire in the first place happened. I should probably get over it anyway. Thank you for helping me out so much last night, and please don't let it concern yourself anymore. It wasn't your fault." I delicately spoke, bringing comfort to the blue dressed servant.
"T-Thank you for forgiving me, Lady Elsbeth. I can assure you that it won't happen ever, ever again! I have your clothes all set out for you, and I drew you a bath in the powder room. Also, the young master wishes to see you in his study once you're done." Mey-Rin informed before tiptoeing out of the guest bedroom with great haste, allowing me to get ready.
Slower than usual I prepared myself for the day, taking a nice long bath in the rose scented warm water which was honestly a relishing experience after being completely drenched from head to toe in the icy rainstorm last night.
Then I combed through my platinum strands, sweeping up a few locks into a silver clip before I changed into the navy lace up dress.
Slipping on some heeled boots I then headed towards Ciel's office once I was finished getting ready.
Walking in without knocking I saw the young Earl jot a few things down on paper, scribbling his name onto some documents, and carefully reading through each important business note that he signed.
His pen was scratching against the parchments, and every once in awhile he would dip the pointed metal tip into the ink filled glass jar beside him.
"Morning." I greeted, breaking the silence, and forcing Ciel's attention to stray from his demanding tasks.
Placing his quill into the gold pen holder in front of him he laced his hands together, the side of his right middle finger stained with black ink from writing.
"It seems you, and my butler had a little dust up last night, and since when I asked him about it he was even more vague than usual I am going to try my persuasive efforts on you now. Care to enlighten me on what happened?"
I leaned back in one of the two chairs that faced his desk, leisurely getting situated, one of my legs draping over the other.
"I'm known to be quite difficult to persuade, and cajole, you know. So, as convincing as you may be from time to time, Ciel, what makes you think that I'll tell you anything, hmm?" I paraphrased, sparking a smug look to form across the Guard Dogs face.
"Because, just like how I forced you to become my bait in that whole missing children, and prostitutes mystery I can force you to tell me what you're hiding as well."
With a long sigh I plopped my chin in the palm of my hand casually, my elbow resting against the wooden arm of the chair.
"Since I'm rather tired I'll just tell you the truth, Ciel. I'm not really up to having a battle of fierce comebacks, and cunning remarks with you right now, so I'll be frank," I began. "Last night I was caught in the storm, Mey-Rin helped me get dry, but she started a fire in the guest bedrooms fireplace which evidently triggered my fear of fire, and then Sebastian came in to put it out. The end."
Ciel didn't seem satisfied by my answer, his navy eye narrowing with skepticism.
"Sebastian told me the exact same thing down to the very last summed up word, so obviously there's more then what you two are saying, so do go on."
Once again I exhaled deeply, not having the strength to fight him not finding out, so I just decided to pour out all of the facts.
"Yesterday I found out that it was originally Sebastian who started the fire back in 1666, so I yelled at him last night, and I was in complete raw shock really. Finding out that the very man that I loved, and trusted more than anyone was also the very one who ruined my life to begin with. It was just a terrible thing to be told after all these years, and I won't ever forgive him." I spoke in a rather unflappable way, but at the end of each of my sentences was a slight crack.
"Well, the way I see it is that Sebastian isn't completely at fault." Ciel versed, making me look at him with an angered glare, but he just sat back in his leather chair, and cleared his throat.
"He is a Demon. Causing ruckus, and creating pain for humans to deal with is merely what Demon's do, its second nature to them. Though you being a human to begin with, and still harboring human standards has obviously led you to think that its all Sebastian's fault, and I as a human myself understand where you're coming from. Though he was simply acting like the cruel Demon he is." The Earl advised, his fingers drumming against the surface of his desk.
"The fact lies not in that he started the fire which ruined your life, but instead it should lie in what Sebastian did for you selflessly. He, for some reason, kept you alive, gave you immortality, abundant amounts of power, and made you into a terrifying creature that no one would want to mess with," He continued. "To a Demon, and any supernatural being for that matter, those are what matter. He wasn't even taunted by your soul, so he did all that because he himself wanted to. In truth you're probably more at fault because you're mad at him now. Sebastian is a Demon. Emotionless, sinister, conniving, and ruthless, yet he saved a mere human girl, why? I wouldn't know for sure, but since my butler seems to genuinely care about you I wouldn't toss that away just because you found out that he was the one who started that fire in the first place."
Once Ciel finished he was confident, he knew he had just shattered the slight minuscule justification that I had in being regretful about taking Sebastian's hand back then. What he spoke making how much he helped me outweigh my anger.
"I suppose you may be right, Ciel. Though... I'm sure you can understand how that information is quite hard to swallow, yes? Imagine if it had also been Sebastian who was responsible for your parents death too. Wouldn't your trust in him be a tad bit shaken up as well?"
"Well, I see that we both like to have a final say in things," Ciel stated, sitting up, and leaning his elbows against his paper strewn desktop. "However, unlike you I do not possess such a long extensive past with Sebastian. He is merely my butler of two years, my pawn who follows my every order, and until the end I'll simply be his master who moves him to where I see fit that he should be, until the day he eats my soul. I can't even begin to imagine the sort of twisted, and complicated relationship that you two have acquired over the many decades. Though as true as Sebastian is my butler he is also the one you love, and nothing can change that correct?"
I merely nodded at his corollary before the studies door opened, and Sebastian emerged out from the hallway.
The air suddenly turned stale, and my breath hitched in my throat as the suave butler sauntered in, a polished silvery tray poised onto his white gloved palm.
Like the perfect, exceptional servant he pretended to be he didn't show a single touch of emotion as he glanced over at me before positioning himself so that he was at Ciel's side, like a shadow.
"My Lord, you have received another letter from the Queen."
Ciel swiped the letter off from the shiny tray, and sliced open the envelop with his golden letter opener.
His blue eye breezed over the words that were written on the piece of paper, his deadpan gaze merely narrowing as he flitted through the cursive sentences.
"Apparently Sir Samuel J. Adams died last night, and now her Majesty wishes for me to go find the murderer." Ciel briefed, folding the note back up neatly, and sliding it into his breast pocket.
"He was Knighted not too long ago for his generosity, and compassion towards people in general, and he was always on the hunt to rid London of any evil correct, my Lord?" Sebastian catechized.
"Yes, I suppose a certain evil rat probably did away with him," Ciel indicated.
"Well, shall we be off straight away then, master?" The ever prompt butler queried, already whisking towards the doorway of the office as if he knew ahead of time what Ciel's answer would be.
"Indeed, would you care to come along, Elsbeth?" Ciel invited, and I nodded, eager to solve another intriguing case.
We strolled down the grand staircase, and Sebastian fetched Ciel's cape, top hat, and cane.
I followed behind the young Earl, grimacing slightly at the iridescent sun rays that flooded through the thin patches of gray clouds.
Sebastian popped open my black parasol, and handed it to me, his gaze soft, and the tiniest bit apologetic before he opened up the carriages doors for us.
"Does the Queen know anything about who the culprit may be?" I questioned as the horses began to pull the carriage forward, their hooves galloping loudly.
"There seems to be quite a lot of suspicions regarding the case, but his death claims to be caused by a member of the Mafia..." Ciel noted as we rode towards London.
